The Rings of Power Season 3: New Season Release Date Revealed

Prime Video has revealed the release date for The Rings of Power Season 3, the third season of the maxi series that serves as (or aspires to serve as) a prequel to The Lord of the Rings (and The Hobbit). Filming on The Rings of Power Season 3, which began in early 2025 at the show’s new production location, Shepperton Studios (UK), wrapped late last year. With a social media post featuring an extremely well-known face, Jamie “Henry Creel/Vecna” Campbell Bower, the end of production on set for the new season had in fact been announced.

After Prime Video predictably confirmed for season three, The Rings of Power, the mega prequel TV series-spinoff of The Lord of the Rings, had arrived on The Rings of Power’s social media channels with a first preview of the next season, what will happen, and when it will take place. Later, Prime leaked the names of the new cast members. Here’s all the information currently available about the cast, storyline, and release date.

The Rings of Power Season 3: New Season Release Date Revealed

Between rights, production, visual effects, and international processing, the project required huge investments to transform the world Tolkien created into an unprecedented television spectacle. And from a technical point of view, the result is evident. Elven cities, Middle-earth landscapes, battles, and digital creatures display a level of production rarely seen on the small screen. The photography is refined, the mammoth set design and the special effects often manage to convey the epic sense typical of the film saga. Yet, despite the visual impact and huge initial anticipation, the series continues to divide audiences and critics. While maintaining a solid fanbase and significant streaming numbers, The Rings of Power doesn’t seem to have managed to transform into the global cultural phenomenon many expected. Some of the spectators appreciated the ambition and spectacular nature of the project, while others have criticized the narrative rhythm, some writing choices, and the perceived detachment from the classical imagery linked to Tolkien’s works.

The Three Directors of the Third Season Have Been Announced!

This season’s three directors, two returns and one new director, have also been announced: Charlotte Brändström, Sanaa Hamri, and Stefan Schwartz. Charlotte Brändström, who served as co-executive producer and directed several episodes of the first two seasons, returns as executive producer and director for the third. She is joined by director Sanaa Hamri, who returns after having already directed some episodes of the second season, and highly experienced director Stefan Schwartz, in his first collaboration with the series. Each director will oversee multiple episodes in the next season.

Brändström has worked in multiple productions, including Shogun (FX), Shoe (Prime Video), The Outsider (HBO), The Witcher (Netflix), and The Man in the High Castle (Prime Video). Hamri, an acclaimed director known for his work on The Wheel of Time (Prime Video) and Empire (Fox), brings with him extensive experience ranging from television to music videos to feature films. He recently directed the pilot of The Bondsman (Prime Video) and continues his creative partnership with Amazon MGM Studios thanks to an overall deal. Rounding out the talented directing team is Schwartz, whose experiences include The Boys (Prime Video), The Walking Dead (AMC), Luther (BBC), and The Americans (FX).

The New and Old Cast Members of The Rings of Power Season 3: There Is “Vecna”?

Prime Video initially named Jamie Campbell Bower (best known for his role as Vecna in Stranger Things, but also as the Gellert Grindelwald of the Harry Potter film universe) and Eddie Marsan (Electric Girls), with Bower joining the main cast, while Marsan will have a recurring role throughout the season. In particular, according to initial rumors, the “beautiful knight of high lineage” who will be played by Bower could be Celeborn, the “desaparecido” Galadriel’s husband, of whom she was expected to return.

In June, three new names were announced: Andrew Richardson, Zubin Varla, and Adam Young, with Richardson joining the main cast as Bower, while Varla and Young will take on recurring roles. But even if the new season moves the story forward a long time from last season’s finale (see below), as Middle-earth fans know, this doesn’t mean the protagonists of past seasons won’t be there at all. As can also be seen in the video announcement, Owain Arthur returns as the dwarf Durin IV, Ismael Cruz Córdova as the elf Arondir, Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, and Charlie Vickers as Sauron.

What The Rings of Power Season 3 Will Be About: The First Official Previews?

After the epic finale of season 2, it is safe to expect that the newly aware Gandalf will do anything to prevent Sauron’s advance, likely with an alliance with the elves. And here is the official synopsis, anticipated by the official social media accounts of The Lord of the Rings on Prime who first revealed what and when Rings of the Power season 3 will be about: “With a leap forward several years from the events of Season 2, Season 3 takes place at the height of the War between the Elves and Sauron, with the Dark Lord seeking to create the One Ring that will give him the margin he needs to win the war and finally conquer all of Middle-earth.”

The Elven War and Sauron Change the tone of the Series?

The first two seasons of The Rings of Power often divided audiences, especially due to the slow pace and emphasis on political and geographical construction of the Second Age. The third season, however, seems ready to change register, shifting the focus from preparation for open conflict. The Forge of the One Ring, in fact, represents one of the most crucial moments of the entire history of The Lord of the Rings. It’s not only a magical object, but also the definitive symbol of control of Sauron, capable of uniting political manipulation, spiritual domination, and military warfare. The new character image with the crown also suggests a visual transformation and ideological: Sauron is no longer just a hidden presence, but a sovereign ready to impose himself openly.

Even on a narrative level, the series enters a more delicate phase. Adapting the Second Age means inevitably facing huge events and expectations very high from Tolkien fans. Amazon will then have to find a balance between spectacle and mythological coherence, avoiding the productive ambition that overwhelms the thematic heart of the story. If it succeeds in this step, season three could represent the real turning point of the series: no longer just an expensive prequel, but a fantasy saga finally able to define its own identity within the universe of The Lord of the Rings.

The Rings of Power Season 3: Release Date

As officially announced, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 will be streaming on Prime Video starting Wednesday, November 11. The number of episodes in season three is unknown, but they will certainly be released weekly.
