I’m Not Afraid (No Tengo Miedo): The Story Plot

The story takes place in the summer of 1986. Miguel, a ten-year-old boy, leads a quiet life in an isolated rural village when his discovery at the bottom of a hidden hole disrupts his daily life. There, he meets Felipe, a boy who initially believes himself to be a ghost. A secret friendship forms between the two children, but Miguel gradually realizes that the situation is far more serious. Felipe has been kidnapped, and the clues seem to point to adults Miguel thought he knew. The series thus explores the moment when a child discovers the violence, lies, and shadow of the adult world.

However, everything changes when he finds something he should never have seen. During one of his explorations, Miguel discovers another child trapped in a hole. The discovery is as strange as it is terrifying. Without fully understanding what is happening, he begins to ask himself questions that no one seems willing to answer. As you try to understand who that child is and why they are there, contradictions, silences, and suspicious behavior begin to appear among the adults in your environment. What seemed like an isolated mystery soon begins to reveal a much deeper truth.

Although the story is not based on a specific real case, it is inspired by the novel of the same name by the Italian writer Niccolò Ammaniti, published in 2001 and made into a film in 2003. The Mexican adaptation takes up elements from the book to portray a problem that has affected thousands of families in different parts of the world: the kidnapping of minors. From his first images, I’m Not Afraid it stands out for its careful visual and narrative proposal, showing the contrast between children’s imagination and a reality marked by crime and fear.

The Darker Side of Adults?

One of the most disturbing points of I’m Not Afraid is the way it confronts the innocent gaze of a child with an adult world marked by fear, poverty, and despair. Miguel begins to discover that the people he trusted are not exactly what he imagined. Those adults who seemed to protect him begin to show unknown facets, and each new revelation threatens to break the image he has of his own family.

The series does not build suspense solely from the main secret. He also does it from that loss of confidence. Fear appears when Miguel understands that the danger is not in a distant monster, but in the decisions of those closest to him. That tension between childhood and injustice turns the story into something more than a thriller. It also transforms it into a story about the loss of innocence and how some truths can mark a life forever.

Veracruz, 1986 and A Story Where Nostalgia Becomes a Threat?

The setting plays a fundamental role. I’m Not Afraid to use the 1986 World Cup as a backdrop, but not to tell a story of sporting euphoria, but to contrast that collective joy with a much darker and quieter drama. While the country celebrates football and lives historical moments, in a small rural corner, a story unfolds, crossed by secrets, inequality, and desperate decisions. The series is directed by Ernesto Contreras, Alba Gil, and Alejandro Zuno, and adapts the novel of the same name by Niccolò Ammaniti. His proposal combines mystery, psychological drama, and rural tension in a narrative that promises to captivate from the first episode.

Is the Series I’m Not Afraid inspired by a True Story?

The Netflix series is inspired by the Italian novel Niccolo Ammaniti of the same name, which was published in 2001, and which was adapted to film in 2003.

The story of the novel takes place in Italy in the 1970s, at a time marked by political chaos, terrorism, and a series of famous kidnappings organized by the mafia. The Netflix series does something similar, presenting a story in which we can see many real situations (such as the World Cup) and a crime that, without a doubt, takes reference from hundreds of cases that did exist, although in other ways.

The kidnapping of the child that is the center of this story is not exactly real, but it reflects what millions of families who have gone through the kidnapping of a loved one have experienced, both in Mexico and in the rest of the world.

What the series also does is show the loss of the protagonist’s innocence, which happens when he realizes that his own family is responsible for the kidnapping of a child like him.

When Does I’m Not Afraid Premiere on Netflix?
