Reacher Season 4 Episode 4 Ending Explained: Is Amisha the Killer? The Karambit and The Key?

The ending of Reacher Season 4 Episode 4 puts Amisha at the center of suspicion, links the murders of Mary and Ben to Indonesia, and leaves Jack Reacher surrounded by police in front of several bodies. But the decisive detail is the Karambit: Amisha possesses the same type of blade used in crimes. Warning: From now on, there are full spoilers for episode 4 of Reacher 4, “Karambits and Pieces”.

The fourth episode of the season significantly changes the picture of the investigation. The USB stick no longer appears to simply contain compromising information: it may retain the only remaining copy of a government document that someone tried to delete. Meanwhile, Ben’s body is found, a connection to Indonesia emerges, and Amisha, in particular, is shown with a Karambit, the same type of weapon associated with the murders. And when Reacher reaches Lila’s motel, he finds the attackers already dead. The police arrive soon after. The result is a cliffhanger that opens up a huge question: Is Amisha involved in the murders, or does someone deliberately want to lead us to suspect her?

Reacher Season 4 Episode 4 Ending Explained: How Does Episode 4 End?

In the ending of Reacher 4 episode 4, Reacher discovers that the men on the trail of the stick are pointing directly at Lila Hoth. When he reaches his motel, however, he arrives too late. The men who had entered to look for the key have already died with their throats slit. Reacher therefore did not witness the fight and does not know who killed them. Very little earlier, however, the episode showed something decisive: Amisha Hoth wields a Karambit, a curved blade of the same type as the one linked to the murders of Mary and Ben.

Before Reacher can figure out what really happened, the Philadelphia police arrive. The officers then find Jack Reacher at the scene, surrounded by the bodies, while the true perpetrator of the murders has disappeared. This is the situation with which the episode ends: Reacher has finally found a concrete connection between several pieces of the investigation, but at the same time he has ended up in the perfect position to be held responsible for the new deaths.

Is Amisha the Killer?

Episode 4 does not confirm that Amisha is the killer. And it’s important to distinguish what we see from what we can deduce.

The editing clearly wants us to suspect her because:

  • Mary was killed with a particular curved blade;
  • Ben has a wound compatible with the same type of weapon;
  • The medical examiner links that blade to Karambits used in Indonesian martial arts;
  • Shortly after, Amisha is shown owning a Karambit;
  • The men found dead at the motel have their throats slit;
  • Reacher only arrives after the fight has already taken place.

The succession of these revelations is not accidental. But it still doesn’t mean Amisha murdered Mary and Ben. She may know the real killer, be connected in some way to General Putra, have a personal history linked to Indonesia, or have used the weapon only to defend Lila from the men who arrived at the motel. It is precisely this ambiguity that makes the cliffhanger effective.

Why is Karambit so Important?

The original title of the episode, Karambits and Pieces, anticipates the importance of the blade. The Karambit is a particular curved weapon originating in Southeast Asia and becomes the material link between several events that until then seemed separate.

During the episode, it is in fact established that Ben and Mary were killed using the same type of weapon. The detail becomes even more significant because Sampson just told Reacher about his past in Indonesia.

ClueWhat it means
KarambitConnect the murders of Mary and Ben.
IndonesiaIt reports on the military mission described by Sampson.
General PutraHe was one of the men trained during that mission.
Amisha with a KarambitMakes it a new possible connection to the murders
Motel deathsThey present a method compatible with other crimes.

The episode’s title therefore takes on a rather literal meaning: Reacher is collecting seemingly separate pieces, while the Karambit is one of the elements that finally allows them to be connected.

Who Killed Ben?

Episode 4 sadly confirms that Ben is dead.

Jacob is called to identify his nephew’s body, found after being abandoned in a dumpster. The most important discovery, however, comes from the examination of the body: Ben was killed by slitting his throat with the same type of weapon used in Mary’s murder. We still don’t have a certain identity of the killer. However, we can conclude that the two deaths are not independent events. Someone is eliminating people connected to the flash drive affair and using an extremely recognizable method. It is precisely this information that transforms the Karambit from a simple macabre detail into one of the main clues of the season.

What Does Sampson Tell Reacher?

One of the most important revelations of the episode comes from the confrontation between Reacher and Sampson. The politician says he was sent to Indonesia years earlier together with an American team and a group of scientists working to find new treatments against some forms of malaria.

Sampson’s men’s job was to protect researchers and work with the local government. As part of the U.S.-Indonesia agreements, however, the U.S. military also participated in training local special forces.

And that’s where General Putra comes in.

Sampson helped train men who were supposed to be allies of the United States, but Putra later became an extremely compromising figure, accused of terrible violence against his opponents.

The revelation explains why Sampson is so worried about the flash drive.

If there were documents capable of publicly linking him to Putra, his political career could suffer devastating consequences. Sampson still claims that the contents of the flash drive belong to the American government and should be returned to the Pentagon. Reacher, predictably, doesn’t trust her enough to deliver it without first knowing what’s inside.

What Does the USB Stick Contain?

This remains the big question for Reacher 4.

Episode 4 doesn’t fully show us the contents of the flash drive yet, but it finally allows us to understand why it might be so important. Tamara manages to break into a government facility used to manage old documents. The system requires cards to be digitized, uploaded to government servers, and physically destroyed. However, Tamara discovers a document that does not appear to have been uploaded correctly to the system. And this is where the puzzle changes. If Anna had copied that document to the dongle before the original was destroyed, the USB may contain the only extant copy of that information. This would explain why someone is willing to kidnap and kill just to get her back.

Where is the Key Located?

Reacher and Tamara also manage to piece together Anna’s last moves. The woman may have realized that she was in danger and could not personally carry the key to its destination. Tamara then discovers a crucial element: Anna is said to have sent her to Lila Hoth at her hotel. And this revelation immediately changes the target of the conspiracy. Lila is no longer just a person indirectly involved in the events. If the person looking for the drive finds out where Anna sent it, Lila becomes the most important person to find. And that is, in fact, exactly what happens.

Why Did Anna Take the Subway?

The episode also allows Reacher to come up with a fuller explanation of what happened to Anna. Tamara, Jacob, and Russell get stuck in traffic along the same route Anna was supposed to use that night. Reacher thus understands that the woman may have chosen the subway simply because she would not have reached her appointment in time using the car. But the episode adds a much more tragic element. Ben may have been kidnapped precisely to force Anna to hand over the key. When the attempt fails, and Ben is killed, Anna may have decided to take a gun and reach the people responsible directly.

The reconstruction proposed by Reacher is therefore this: someone discovers that Anna has compromising information; Ben is used as leverage; Anna tries to reach him; Ben is killed; Anna hides or sends the key; he takes a gun; uses the subway to quickly reach someone; the meeting with Reacher definitively sends his plan into crisis. This remains a reconstruction of Reacher, not a sequence shown in full to the viewer, but it finally puts in order many of the strange decisions Anna made at the beginning of the season.

What is the Connection Between General Putra and the Murders?

For now, we have a strong connection, but not definitive proof. Sampson reveals his past in Indonesia and his relationship with Putra. We later discover that Mary and Ben were killed using a weapon linked to Indonesian martial tradition. The episode is therefore intended to bring us to a natural conclusion: Putra could be directly involved in the conspiracy.

But soon after, he introduces Amisha with a Karambit. And this is where Reacher deliberately complicates the most obvious solution. We could be in front of: Putra men still operating in the United States; someone connected to his past; Amisha directly involved; a lead created specifically to make Putra appear responsible; multiple factions interested in the same document. For this reason, it would be premature to indicate Putra as the instigator of the murders.

Why is Reacher Found By the Police?

Reacher intercepts the communications of the men who are looking for Lila through a radio and runs to the motel. When he enters the room, however, he finds the attackers already dead. Someone beat them to it. The problem is that the police arrive immediately afterwards. From the officers’ point of view, the scene is terrible: Reacher is inside a room with several bodies and does not immediately have a verifiable explanation as to who killed them. The cliffhanger can then work on two levels. Reacher may have simply arrived at the worst possible time, or someone may have organized the events so that he would be found right there. The episode does not yet allow us to establish which of the two interpretations is correct.

What Changes After the Ending of Episode 4?

At the end of Karambits and Pieces, almost all the main mysteries of the season finally begin to converge. The key, Anna, Ben, Mary, Sampson, Putra, and Lila now seem to belong to the same puzzle.

The situation can be summarized as follows:

QuestionSituation after episode 4
Is Ben alive?No, he is found dead.
Are Mary and Ben connected?Yes, they were killed with the same type of weapon.
Where is the key?Anna seems to have sent it to Lila.
What’s in it?Probably a copy of an unarchived government document
Is Putra involved?The clues suggest so, but confirmation is missing.
Is Amisha the killer?It is not confirmed, but he owns a Karambit.
Is Reacher in trouble?Yes, the police find him at the scene of several murders.

What Does Reacher 4 Episode 5 Prepare?

The next episode will first have to resolve Reacher’s situation with the police. But the most important question concerns Amisha. The fourth episode would have no reason to show us its karambit just after determining that the same weapon links two murders if that detail did not have any weight in the story. This doesn’t necessarily mean she’s the killer.

Instead, it could be the first clue to a past Lila herself doesn’t know, or to a much closer relationship between Amisha and the Indonesian component of the conspiracy. At the same time, Reacher will have to figure out if Sampson is telling him the whole truth. His connection to Putra, in fact, gives him a personal reason for wanting the contents of the key not to become public. And, above all, the answer to the central question of the season is still missing:

What’s Really on That Stick?

It is probably that response, even more than the identity of the person holding the Karambit, that can explain why so many people have already died.
