How to Watch the Insidious Movies in Order (and How Many There Are)

The Insidious franchise has been quietly building one of the most interesting mythologies in modern horror for over fifteen years. What started in 2010 as a haunted house story about a family whose son falls into a mysterious coma has expanded into a sprawling narrative about the Further—a dark spiritual dimension filled with lost souls, angry spirits, and demons desperate to cross into the world of the living. Along the way, the saga has introduced psychic mediums, astral projection, and now, with the sixth film, a protagonist whose powers work differently than anything seen before.

If you’re trying to figure out how to watch the series, you have two options: release order or chronological order. Both work, but they offer different experiences. Release order preserves the way the story was originally told, with the mysteries unfolding the way the creators intended. Chronological order reshuffles things to follow the events as they happen in the timeline of the characters. Here’s everything you need to know.

Insidious Movies in Order: Release Order

Insidious (2010) — The one that started it all. Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne play Josh and Renai Lambert, whose son Dalton falls into an unexplained coma. They soon discover that Dalton isn’t sick—he’s trapped in the Further, a realm of ghosts and demons, and something is trying to use his body as a way out. Lin Shaye introduces Elise Rainier, the psychic who becomes the heart of the entire franchise.

Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) — The Lambert family discovers they didn’t fully defeat the darkness from the first film. Something is still after them, and the connection between Josh, Dalton, and the Further runs deeper than anyone realized. This installment reveals secrets about the family’s history and sets up threads that will continue for years.

Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) — The first prequel, set years before the events of the first film. A young woman named Quinn Brenner reaches out to Elise Rainier for help contacting her dead mother, only to discover she’s attracted the attention of something malevolent. The film explains more about Elise’s past and the rules of the Further.

Insidious: The Last Key (2018) — Another prequel, this time focused entirely on Elise. She returns to her childhood home, the place where she first began seeing ghosts, and confronts the darkness that started everything. The film also introduces characters who will connect back to the Lambert story in unexpected ways.

Insidious: The Red Door (2023) — The sequel that closes the Lambert arc. Dalton is now a college student with little memory of his childhood trauma. But the memories are returning, and he and his father must work together to close the red door—the doorway that allows spirits to cross between worlds. Patrick Wilson directs.

Insidious: Out of the Further (2026) — The newest chapter, and the most significant expansion of the mythology. Gemma, a young mother, discovers she can enter the Further—and bring its inhabitants back with her. It’s a power unlike anything the franchise has shown before, and it makes her the target of every entity desperate to escape. Elise returns in her spirit form to help.

Where to Watch

Streaming availability varies by region, but currently: Insidious: Chapter 2 and Insidious: Chapter 3 are on HBO Max. Insidious: The Red Door and Insidious: The Last Key are on Netflix. The original Insidious isn’t currently available on major streaming platforms. Insidious: Out of the Further just released in theaters.

The Movies in Chronological Order

Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) — Set several years before the first film. Quinn seeks Elise’s help and encounters the Man Who Can’t Breathe. This is the earliest point in the timeline, establishing Elise’s history with the Further.

Insidious: The Last Key (2018) — Elise’s story continues, going back to her childhood home in New Mexico. The events here predate Chapter 3 in some respects, but the film’s main action takes place after it. The chronological ordering is slightly fuzzy in places, which is part of the fun.

Insidious (2010) — The Lambert story begins. Dalton is trapped, Josh and Renai are desperate, and Elise enters their lives. The events of the first film set everything else in motion.

Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) — Picks up immediately after the first film. The Lambert family’s connection to the Further runs deeper than they knew.

Insidious: The Red Door (2023) — Dalton is grown, but the past won’t stay buried. The Lambert arc concludes here.

Insidious: Out of the Further (2026) — The newest story, following Gemma and her dangerous gift. Chronologically the latest installment in the saga.

Is Out of the Further the Last Movie?

Nobody knows yet. The film introduces a new protagonist and a new kind of threat, which suggests the franchise could continue. James Wan and Leigh Whannell have built a world that can accommodate new stories, and Gemma’s power—the ability to bring entities from the Further into the real world—opens up possibilities the series hasn’t explored before. If Out of the Further succeeds, there’s every reason to think more installments will follow. If it doesn’t, it still functions as a satisfying expansion of the mythology. The red door may be closed, but the Further is still there, waiting.
