From the first and exciting trailer, we can already notice many connections with the most beloved Marvel TV series, especially with the comics that have made the history of the characters of Wanda and Vision. Agatha All Along Trailer Analysis: A Trailer with a Twist!

Agatha All Along is the next live-action serial product by Marvel Cinematic Studios coming out in 2024. Specifically, the series will debut on Disney+ on September 19 with its first two episodes and will be ready to conquer fans of WandaVision and beyond. From the trailer, we can see that the series will retain the comedy matrix of WandaVision, even if less marked than the mother series, and will add an important horror touch, perfect for the autumn season. The trailer was well packaged: it tells us in apparently chronological order what we will then see in the TV series, without subterfuge. We are used to seeing misleading trailers that want to distract the viewer’s attention from what the series will actually tell, thus deceiving the viewer and then causing a strong disappointment when the product is released. Agatha All Along is anything but that. From what we can gather, it’s an honest trailer that promises its audience to deliver a fun, female-centric series all about witches. But most importantly: are you ready to enter Marvel’s supernatural horror universe?

Where Were We?

The first trailer for Agatha All Along opens by telling us where we left off at the end of WandaVision. Agatha is now a detective dealing with the bloodiest cases in the city of Westview, the town in WandaVision where we left the witch. At the end of WandaVision, Wanda stripped Agatha of her powers and condemned her to forget who she was, relegating her to assuming the mind and appearance of a character from a sitcom. We don’t know how long this spell lasted since the tag associated with the corpse that we see at the beginning of the trailer doesn’t indicate the year, but surely a lot of time has passed.

Considering the soul of WandaVision and the structure of the series, we can already tell you about our first theory: what if Agatha All Along was structured like WandaVision? It wouldn’t be a series that retraces a different year of TV sitcoms in each episode, but a show that pays homage to a classic of the horror and thriller genre in each episode. This theory of ours is supported by many Easter eggs present throughout the trailer. The most striking example is provided by the beginning of the teaser in which Agatha is a detective. This small sequence could be a reference to Easttown Murder, an HBO TV series with Kate Winslet that in the second episode features a scene identical to the one shown in the trailer of Agatha All Along.

In addition to the one mentioned, there are many other references to the television and cinematic universe of the genre, such as Suspiria, The Exorcist but also ET, and The Wizard of Oz. Another big push in favor of this theory of ours lies in the constant change of title that the series has undergone. If you remember well, before being called Agatha All Along (a title that refers to the very famous song sung by the character in WandaVision) the show had several titles, names that could now be used as the titles of the various episodes. In each of these episodes, Wanda would explore a different magical reality and you will meet new acolytes. In each reality, the show could pay homage to a different sub-genre or product of the horror and thriller scene.

As for the body of the woman present in the trailer, it is clearly Wanda’s, but we can tell you with absolute certainty that the one shown in Agatha All Along is not her real body but probably an illusion given by the fictional world in which Agatha lives under the spell of the Scarlet Witch. Consider that Wanda “left us” (although she will surely return before the second film dedicated to the Avengers) in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and, the writer, strongly doubts that her body will be shown in this show. However, the fact that Wanda has currently disappeared even temporarily, or fled to another reality, implies that the spell she had exerted on Agatha has necessarily weakened, which is why the character has now returned to herself. Agatha may have easily regained her memory, but she no longer has her witch powers. The show will in fact have as its objective to make her regain them and during the mission she will not be alone. Agatha Harkness will give life to a coven in her name to follow the path of the witches and return to the glory of the past.

The New Characters and the References to the Comics?

The trailer for Agatha All Along finally shows us many new characters who will accompany Agatha during her adventure. Most of the new entries will directly enter Agatha’s coven to help the witch recover her powers, but perhaps they will also have personal goals that the teaser rightly does not reveal to us. The first to make her entrance into the MCU is Aubrey Plaza as Rio, a very powerful green witch who awakens Agatha from her spell. Rio can enter Wanda’s illusion and still remain unaffected. We must also remind you that according to many, Aubrey Plaza’s character will be the villain of the series.

Rio could be a former romantic interest of the protagonist seeking revenge. Revenge will be an important film rouge throughout the series, not by chance the song that serves as the soundtrack to the trailer is Seven Devils by Florence + The Machine and the number 7 appears several times throughout the trailer. Returning to Rio, we can note that after Agatha’s awakening, the character is shown to us inside an area with a prevalence of green colors and delimited by some runes. If you remember the runes indicate that within their perimeter only the witch who drew them can exercise her powers.

In this case, given the green color of the runes, it could be Rio. Also, if you pay close attention to the trailer, you will notice that there is a very good image in which Rio attacks Agatha. Who knows, maybe that is the moment in which the villain reveals herself to the protagonist and the spectators. A welcome return in a new guise will make WandaVision fans very happy: Joe Locke, protagonist of Heartstopper, will play the role of the teenager Billy, Wanda’s son, in Agatha All Along. It will be interesting to understand if the boy’s growth compared to the original series is due to his magical powers or if the character comes from another reality, given that the one in which he was created by Wanda theoretically no longer exists.

Billy’s presence makes a lot of sense in the new show, both because the boy has magical powers like his mother, and because of the future of the MCU which is inevitably directed towards the Young Avengers. Billy’s presence does not necessarily include that of Tommy, Wanda, and Vision’s other son with powers identical to those of his uncle Pietro. The boy will certainly return to the Marvel universe but could do so within Vision Quest, the Disney+ TV series dedicated to the White Vision seen at the end of WandaVision that should adapt the comic book run entitled Vision was written by Tom King.

Most likely, Agatha All Along and Vision Quest will be two series in the format of formally independent miniseries but will essentially act as seasons two and three of WandaVision and will serve to tell the events of “The Children’s Crusade” (and therefore go and fish out a version of Wanda) and open the doors for the film dedicated to the Young Avengers. Continuing with the cast of the new TV series we find Sasheer Zamata, who in the trailer we see only for a fleeting moment, the actress in the show will play the role of Jennifer Kale, in the Marvel comics she is a sorceress who is part of the Cult of Zhered-Na. The legendary Patti LuPone will instead be Lilia Calderu, a witch with divination powers that allow her to see the future. In the comics, Lilia Calderu is the leader of a coven in charge of guarding the Book of Caliostro, from which she descends. We have already seen the book in the first Doctor Strange film, and it is that tome dedicated to the laws of time.

Finally, we find Ali Ahn, who will be Alice, a witch who will join Agatha’s coven, and Debra Jo Rupp, who will play Mrs. Hart, the lady that Wanda invited to dinner in the first episode of the series. In the main series, the character did not have magical powers, but apparently, she kept them well hidden because she would also join the coven. Another theory that we can advance given the presence of Mrs. Hart in this new series is linked to the influence of the ESA. If you remember, Monica Rambeau’s contact with the ESA led to the blossoming of magical powers in Teyonah Parris’ character. What if this had also happened to Mrs. Hart? What if Mrs. Hart had inherited or discovered her powers, perhaps dormant, precisely because she was influenced by Wanda’s power? We will surely find out from September 19 on Disney+.

In the trailer, you can also notice that in many sequences the characters are wearing clothes from different eras. We can’t tell you if the witches will travel through time or if each reality or magical world they visit will be set in a different era, this option seems more likely to us since the characters will travel the witches’ road. The Witches’ Road is a plane of existence where only warlocks can walk, still unpublished in the MCU but destined to be explored within Agatha All Along. The last thing we really want to explore concerns the sequences in which Agatha constantly touches her head, as if she were trapped in the intent of her mind. What if Wanda’s spell has blocked Agatha deeper, depriving her of mental access to her powers? Agatha could be trapped inside her own mind and only with the help of her coven could she find the remedy to escape from her imprisonment. It wouldn’t be surprising if the spell was kept inside a new forbidden book and if the search for this manuscript occupied a good part of the series. In this way Agatha could take a path of redemption that would lead her to fully awaken but could also consecrate her as a new gray character of Marvel when she has to save the universe from someone even more evil; Rio for example.
