Directed by Richard Lagravenese from a script by Carrie Solomon, A Family Affair is a Netflix film that follows Zara Ford (Joey King), the assistant of an actor who aspires to become in production company. Although she is tired of dealing with the cocky and self-centered Chris Cole (Zac Efron), she continues working for him in hopes of finding a better job opportunity. However, everything gets worse when she discovers that her boss is having an affair with her mother, the well-known writer Brooke Harwood (Nicole Kidman). Zara (Joey King) lives in the shadow of her mother Brooke (Nicole Kidman), a successful writer. To fulfill herself, the girl chose the path of cinema, with the dream of soon having a role in the production. To achieve the coveted goal, for some years the young woman has been acting as personal assistant to Hollywood superstar Chris Cole (Zac Efron), satisfying the star’s most absurd whims, with the promise of soon being promoted to a position closer to the aspirations of her. After yet another senseless argument, Zara can’t take it anymore and she decides to leave her impossible boss. An event that not only changes her life, but also leads to the meeting, and consequent falling in love, between her mother – the woman is a widow – and the egocentric actor. Naturally, the strange relationship will be opposed by her incredulous and dismayed daughter.
Every waiter in Hollywood dreams of being an actor or has a script in the drawer. A statement that, however hyperbolic, has a grain of truth. Many are young people who have moved to Los Angeles chasing the dream of cinema, often having to deal with the difficulties of life in the big and ruthless metropolis. People willing to accept even the humblest jobs to support themselves, but also capable of providing precious contacts with the world of entertainment (yes, we know, in Hollywood sometimes all it takes is knocking on the right door to turn your life around). Maybe working as a night porter in a hotel frequented by “producer X”, in the hope of giving him your script, or, like one of Zara’s friends, tidying up the boundless wardrobes of spoiled jet-set stars.

While Zara is thinking about what to do with her life and hanging out with her best friend Eugenie (Liza Koshy), Chris looks for her at her house and meets Brooke. The latter are attracted to each other and after several glasses of alcohol and an honest conversation about their lives, they head to the bedroom and let themselves be carried away by passion. Shortly after, Zara arrives and finds them in a compromising situation. Zara ends up in the hospital after slamming the door on her mother and her ex-boss in bed. Both her mother and Chris apologize for the situation. The artist offers her the chance to go back to work as his producer and assures her that that was the only reason she came to his house. The young woman accepts, but on the condition that she stay away from Brooke.
Although the actor and the writer agree to promise not to see each other, they feel they owe each other a conversation and go out to dinner. During the evening, they share more details about their lives. Brooke talks about her late husband and Chris tells her what his life was like before he became a delivery. They also express their doubts and finally, they decide to have a secret romance. Of course, that doesn’t last long, as the protagonist of A Family Affair notices something strange and follows her mother. After catching them kissing, she reproaches them for her lies and threatens her mother with leaving her house. Something Brooke accepts. While things calm down, the writer visits her mother-in-law and Zara spends a few days at Eugenie and her boyfriend’s house.

To resolve the problem between mother and daughter, Leila Ford gathers her family for Christmas and extends the invitation to Chris. At first, Zara objects, but her grandmother convinces her to behave like an adult. The four of them enjoy a nice dinner and the young woman manages to see that her mother is happy. In addition, she finds out that her father was planning to divorce her before discovering her illness, so she seems willing to accept. the romance with her boss. At least until she finds the diamond earrings in the actor’s bag. Back at home, Zara confronts Chris in the presence of her mother. Eugenie’s harsh words help her understand her mistakes and she returns to accompany her friend on New Year’s. At the end of A Family Affair Zara and her grandmother join forces to bring about a reunion and reconciliation between Chris and Brooke. They trick them together in a shopping center and get them to resume their relationship. A year later, Brooke publishes a book again, Zara becomes a producer and Chris takes on new roles.
