The resounding success of Deadpool and Wolverine and the consequent enthusiasm for the next products to come (Fantastic Four, Captain America, and others) give us hope, even if the need to take a clearer path given 2026 and 2027, the year in which the new Avengers films that everyone is waiting for will arrive, was palpable. And these two productions, announced a couple of years ago, have suffered several setbacks: changes in directors, screenwriters, titles… in short, real chaos if we think about Disney and Marvel standards.
But here comes the San Diego Comic-Con, a stage that Marvel and Feige have always used to talk to the community and reach all the fans worldwide. The 2024 edition risks becoming the most important of all, we will only understand in the future if for better or worse. Why? Soon, said: aside from the moments dedicated to the next films coming out, the most important announcements have focused on the Avengers brand and the next releases. Avengers: Doomsday (this is the new title, which replaces “The Kang Dynasty) and Avengers: Secret Wars will officially be directed by the Russo Brothers (creators of Infinity War, Endgame, Civil War, and Winter Soldier) and written by Stephen McFeely. In short, the dream team of the greatest Marvel successes. It’s not over, however, because after “I Love You 3000” and “I Am Iron Man”, Robert Downey Jr will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this time in the role of the greatest villain in the history of Marvel comics: Doctor Doom. A rather shocking news that has generated several reactions. Let’s try to talk about it clearly and analyze the possible motivations and related scenarios.
What are the Origins of Dr. Doom? Who is Dr. Doom?
Doom, also known as Victor Von Doom, is one of the most feared antagonists in the Marvel Universe. Originally from a Roma camp near Haasenstadt, Latveria, Victor’s childhood was filled with tragedy. His mother, Cynthia, was killed in a failed pact with Mephisto. Doom devoted himself to the study of science and magic in an attempt to save his mother, believing Mephisto was responsible for her death. During his time at the school, he had the opportunity to meet Reed Richards and Ben Grimm for the first time. A rivalry developed between him and Richards that reached its peak when Reed changed Victor’s last name to “Doof” on a trophy, in his first prank ever. Richards and Doom were intellectual peers. Both men would endlessly debate esoteric theories, astounding faculty members who compared them to such brilliant minds as Albert Einstein and Leonardo da Vinci. While Reed was busy designing a spaceship, Doom was consumed by an obsession with creating a device capable of transferring his astral form to other dimensions, in the hopes of saving his mother’s soul from the clutches of Mephisto.
Reed spotted an error in Doom’s calculations, but Doom arrogantly ignored the warning, suspecting Reed of trying to eclipse his work. The experiment failed catastrophically, disfiguring Victor’s face, and he was subsequently expelled for conducting unethical experiments. Doom has since blamed Reed Richards for his misfortunes. Disgraced and bitter, Doom traveled the globe in search of a solution to his problem. His journey ended in a remote Tibetan village, where compassionate monks assisted him in crafting a suit of armor. With his newfound power, he returned to his homeland of Latveria, overthrowing the ruler and declaring himself ruler. From that point on, he exploited the nation’s resources to further his goals of global conquest. These ambitions repeatedly put him on a collision course with the Fantastic Four and numerous other superheroes.
Dr. Doom Here’s His Role in Comics?
Doom makes his first appearance in Fantastic Four #5, published in July 1962, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. In this issue, Victor is introduced as an evil genius with both scientific and magical abilities. He is the absolute ruler of Latveria and uses his country’s resources to further his plans for global conquest. Doom is renowned for his exceptional intelligence, command of advanced technology, and expertise in the dark arts. He has battled many Marvel heroes, including the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and even the mighty Galactus. Although he is an antagonist, Doom is often portrayed as a complex character with a moral code and a strong sense of honor.

This relationship is characterized by constant power play and rivalry, with Doom always trying to prove his superiority over Richards. However, there are times when the two have put aside their differences to face common threats, showing a complexity and depth rare between hero and villain.
Dr. Doom: Powers and Abilities?
Doom possesses several abilities that make him one of the most formidable adversaries in the Marvel Universe:
Magic: Doom was initiated into the mystic arts by his mother, who was of Romani and Latverian origin. He deepened his knowledge by traveling through time and studying the Dark Arts, learning from masters such as Morgan le Fey. When Dr. Strange stepped down as Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme, Doom was considered among the possible successors.
Genius Intelligence: Doom’s most dangerous weapon is his intellect. He is one of the finest mortal minds on the planet. Doom even cured Ben Grimm of his monstrous form. He has built hundreds of devices, including a working time machine, devices that can imbue people with powers, and many other types of robots. His most frequently used robots are his “Doombots“, exact mechanical replicas of himself.
These robots look like Doom, talk like him, and even act like him. Individually, Doombots have advanced artificial intelligence so that each believes itself to be the real Doom. As a safety measure, each Doombot has a dampening program that is activated whenever the real Doom (or another Doombot) is nearby. Doom specializes in physics, robotics, cybernetics, genetics, weapons technology, biochemistry, and time travel. He also has natural talents for leadership, strategy, politics, and manipulation.
Master Martial Artist: During his time in Tibet, Doom was supposedly trained in martial arts by monks. He is highly skilled in various fighting techniques, both armed and unarmed. He was trained by the best sword masters on Earth. He was also able to defeat Black Panther in close combat even when his armor was depowered and incapacitated Taskmaster in pure melee, without the aid of technology or magic.
Indomitable Will: Doom has phenomenal determination, fearlessness, and willpower. He has the strongest will on Earth. He was able to withstand psychic attacks from Emma Frost and the Purple Man using only his will, reject the mystical armor that the Soulsword provides its wielder, and while being tortured in Hell, he refused to let a single audible signal of pain escape his mouth.
Doom’s willpower could even be considered godlike, as after stealing the Arcana’s all-powerful abilities for himself, he was able to create an entirely new planet from the remains of the incursion points between collapsing worlds: Battleworld. He held this world together with his will.
Doctor Doom in Secret Wars (2015)
However, the pinnacle of his power comes in the mega event ‘ Secret Wars ‘ (2015), one of the most ambitious and revolutionary sagas of the Marvel Universe, written by Jonathan Hickman and illustrated by Esad Ribic. The story begins with the destruction of the multiverse due to a series of collisions between different parallel realities, known as incursions. The last two surviving realities are Earth-616 (the main Marvel Universe) and Earth-1610 (the Ultimate Universe). When the two Earths collide, most of the heroes and villains are destroyed. But Victor Von Doom, with the help of the powerful Molecule Man and Doctor Strange, manages to save fragments of various realities and combine these parts to create a new world called Battleworld . Using the power of Molecule Man, Doom proclaims himself God-Emperor of this new realm, specifically of Latverion, where he has erected the fortress Doomstadt.
With his new powers, Doom has created a royal family, taking Sue Storm (the Invisible Woman) as his wife and Johnny Storm (the Human Torch) as the sun of Battleworld, punishing him for his disobedience. Ben Grimm (The Thing), on the other hand, is transformed into the wall that separates the various domains, a colossal rocky being that serves as a physical and symbolic barrier. Despite his god-like power, Victor‘s authority is tested by various rebels. The survivors of Earth-616, including Reed Richards, Black Panther, Spider-Man, and others, unite to overthrow the tyrannical God-Emperor. In an epic clash, Reed challenges Doom, questioning his morality and the legitimacy of his power and, thanks to the help of Molecule Man, the rebels manage to steal the villain’s power and use it to restore the multiverse, returning everything to normal. At the end of the saga, Doom redeems himself and is returned to normal with his face healed of scars, a symbolic sign of his redemption.
Dr. Doom in Cinema
Doom has been depicted in multiple film versions, each of which has further cemented his status as an iconic villain in the Marvel Universe. The character received particular attention in the 2005 film Fantastic Four, where he was played by Julian McMahon. In that adaptation, Victor is a corrupt business magnate who gains superhuman powers as a result of the same cosmic event that gives the Fantastic Four their powers. McMahon returned to the role of Doctor Doom in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, where the character continues to be a significant threat to the superhero team. Despite the films’ mixed reviews, his portrayal left a lasting impression on fans of the character.
In the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot, Toby Kebbell created a new version of Doctor Doom. In this film, Victor Von Doom is a scientist who gains superhuman powers following an accident in another dimension. Although the film was not a success, it provided a different take on the character. Anticipation is now high for the new version of Dr. Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), with Robert Downey Jr. taking on the role of the villain.
New Mask Same Task?
Let’s start from the theatrical aspect of the announcement and the fact that, from the point of view of the communicative power of the announcement, we are at stellar levels. We will not talk about anything else for the next two years, and it is quite understandable: not only of the greatness of the actor and the character but above all because we are talking about Robert Downey Jr, Iron Man, one of the modern characters who has made the recent history of Hollywood. From a creative point of view, however, a series of doubts can be raised that we will not fail to address, but let’s start with some considerations. From an agraphic point of view, Robert Downey Jr is perhaps “more perfect” for Victor Von Doom than Iron Man, a villain who makes charisma and intelligence his best characteristics, excluding the acrobatic action of Tony Stark.
Artistically speaking, however, Robert Downey Jr is a fresh Oscar winner and this role allows him to face the experience with a more dramatic and introspective tone. As someone wrote, “It was difficult to make Doom cooler, as long as Robert Downey Jr wasn’t playing him”. Victor Von Doom is a simply extraordinary character and will certainly be the great protagonist of the two films about the Avengers, as it was for Thanos in Infinity War and Endgame. The last aspect, perhaps the most fascinating, is the following: perhaps the concept of multiverse finds its true meaning in hypotheses like this. What would happen if the most intelligent man on the planet used his energies not to devote himself to good (and therefore become Iron Man), but dedicated himself to total conquest (perhaps shaken by some trauma) and therefore became Doctor Doom? We don’t know yet if this will be the case or if Robert Downey Jr will only be the face and not the Tony Stark we know but from another universe. Surely, however, this hypothesis is very intriguing and would immediately add a level of drama to the plot that should not be underestimated.
At the End of Your Tether?
Deadpool says this to Logan, during a scene of Deadpool and Wolverine, implying and making fun of the fact that the MCU in recent years has struggled – creatively speaking – to find the end of the skein. For many, the choice of Robert Downey Jr in the role of Doom may seem like a desperate move to bring back enthusiasm to 100% and also bring back those fans who in recent years have been a little disappointed. But is it really like that? Objectively, no. In the sense that the Marvel Studios franchise is the richest in history (30 billion in earnings and 20 in profit) and in any case has always continued to bring along its most loyal audience. It must also be said that the sentiment has changed, going from totally enthusiastic to “ok” or “disappointed” depending on the film and series. From a communication and marketing point of view, this is certainly a political choice to rekindle the flame between now and the next two years.
Of course, there are many unknowns: because if it is true that the potential is crazy, so are the risks. If the next two Avengers are not impeccable, innovative, and incisive, then RDJ’s announcement will go down in history as the “worst choice ever”, and we know that when expectations are high, judgments are also merciless. Trying to reason logically, it is also likely that these two films will truly close the cycle started with the first Iron Man, to then make room for the next great protagonists of the MCU: Fantastic 4 and X-Men and the desire to make a real point is certainly real.
In short, net of the considerations that can be made now we will only have to wait. The contrasting feelings that fuel this incredible announcement are legitimate. The invitation is not to think in absolutes, as only the Sith do, and to be patient for the time needed to discover a few more details. Based on what we know today, Kevin Feige has reunited the dream team that made the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and we have to have some faith in that. In addition, Robert Downey Jr is one of the best actors currently alive, and he will certainly be able to give a performance as Victor Von Doom that is certainly unique and peculiar. So we just have to wait, hoping to be able to once again enjoy unforgettable moments shouting: “Avengers… UNITED”.
