The Bluff Ending Explained: What Happened to Ercell and Her Family after Captain Connor’s Return?

Pirates who do not know her past underestimate her, something that the protagonist of “The Bluff” takes the opportunity to free himself from and murder the men who threaten his life and that of his son. After the bloody battle, Pastor Bradley appears to warn him about Captain Connor’s return and explain that the town surrendered after losing several people. Ercell entrusts her son to Pastor Bradley, while she searches for Elizabeth, who, after finding her boyfriend’s body, witnessed the violent attacks of the pirates and managed to sneak to the road that leads to her house. Ercell finds her, explains the situation to her, and takes her to take refuge in the jungle, where they meet Issac and Bradley, who, in his past life, was a pirate.

Captain Connor’s crew, led by Petty Officer Lee (Temuera Morrison), searches every corner of Ercell’s house for gold. When they get nothing, they follow the woman’s trail to the jungle. Although they are close to catching them, they fail due to the alligator-ridden lake and Bradley’s sacrifice. Despite the efforts of the protagonist “The Bluff”, Captain Connor and his crew surround her and threaten to hurt her husband, so she has no choice but to accept the exchange: gold for the life of Theodore H. Bodden. Before the agreed time, Ercell takes his son and sister-in-law to the place where they hid the treasure he stole and planned to leave them as an inheritance.

What Happened to Ercell and His Family?

Before the exchange, Ercell tries to free her husband but fails, so she continues with the initial plan. Everything seems to be going well until Francisco Connor provokes TH. Bodden comments on Isaac, and a confrontation breaks out. Despite Theodore’s skill with the sword, he fails to overcome the pirate and dies in battle. With no other options, Ercell causes an explosion that destroys the gold and escapes to reunite with his son and sister-in-law. After losing his son, Petty Officer Lee is no longer willing to follow the captain’s mad revenge and turns his back on him. Which results in his death. To have the rest of the crew accompany him, Connor shows the decree of three empires that offers immunity to those who hand over the pirate Bloody Mary (Ercell).

The pirates find the tunnels and follow the trail of the fugitives. Ercell instructs Isaac and Elizabeth to escape before it is too late and then heads to turn on the signal to request the help of the British Forces. In the process, he faces several men, and after some injuries, he manages to prevail. Upon reaching the top, he discovers that Connor turned on the signal to deliver it and collect the reward. Of course, Ercell fights with all her might. When it seems that all is lost, Elizabeth appears and shoots the pirate. Ercell takes advantage of the distraction and eliminates his enemy. At the end of “The Bluff”, Ercell survives with her family, revealing that her real name is Mariam. It is also confirmed that the gold was not destroyed and is in the boat in which Isaac escaped. The authorities are heading to the island. Will they catch Ercell, or will he manage to hide his secret?

The Battle in the Caves?

Ercell had anticipated this moment for years. He turned the island’s cave system into a strategic minefield. With the help of Elizabeth and Issac, set traps and prepare escape routes. While Elizabeth manages to avenge the death of her beloved Weston, Issac escapes in a secret boat —discovering that some of the royal gold was hidden there— and heads towards possible British help. The showdown occurs at the top of the cliff. Connor turns on the smoke signal, hoping the British will reward him for capturing a fugitive with a reward. However, that act ends up sealing his fate. Thanks to a distraction from Elizabeth, Ercell finally manages to kill Connor. His executioner falls in the same place where he arrived, convinced that he would regain his power.

What Does Connor’s Death Mean?

Connor’s death symbolizes something deeper than the defeat of an enemy. It represents the end of the psychological control he exercised over Mariam since he “adopted” her as a child and molded her as a pirate. Connor saw her as property: first as a weapon, then as a forced lover, then as a traitor. But Ercell is no longer the manipulated girl or the Bloody Mary who survived out of obligation. By defeating him, she regains her identity as Mariam, free from the shadow of her abuser. Although victory has a high cost—the death of TH and other inhabitants— it also represents a definitive liberation.
