Warning: Full spoilers for the eight episodes of Lupin Season 4 (Lupin Part 4). In the finale, Assane Diop is hit by a bullet while protecting Raoul, his son, who betrayed him by allying himself with Hubert Pellegrini. The series cuts short before revealing whether Assane will survive: it is incorrect to say that he is dead. Part 4 has been absolutely heartbreaking. Surely none of the viewers expected something like this, but without a doubt it was the stimulus they needed from the Netflix series after so long between one season and another. The outcome of the fourth season of “Lupin” left a large part of his viewers with their hands on their heads. And although the white-collar thief he plays is Omar Sy, he returned to the screens with a plan that promised calm; everything ended up becoming a family drama with secrets and a shot that almost no one saw coming.

So, if you already enjoyed eight episodes from this installment of the series on Netflix, surely you have several pending questions, such as what pushes Raoul (Théo Christine) to turn his back on his father and what happens to him, Assane Diop, in the last scene. It is worth specifying that Part 4 of the production is set four years after the previous batch of chapters. Here, Assane is serving his sentence and plans to travel to Senegal with his son Raoul as soon as he is released. However, when an imitator appears announcing two simultaneous robberies in museums in Avignon and Paris, the authorities blame our protagonist. Therefore, he escapes from prison to clear his name.
Lupin Season 4 Ending Explained: Who Is the Fake Lupin?
To the surprise of many, the imposter is Adele Kapoor (Laïka Blanc-Francard), the very daughter of Assane and Juliette Pellegrini (Clotilde Hesme). Turns out to her they sent her to an orphanage in England after she was born, while her mother was told that the baby had not survived. And, in the story, Adèle disguises herself as Lupin to get your father’s attention and to steal the Crown Jewels, a treasure that four families, known as the Guardians, have guarded for generations.
Adèle Kapoor is the daughter of Assane and Juliette Pellegrini. After being sent to an orphanage in England by Hubert, the girl looks for a way to connect with her biological family. His imitation of Lupin, also made thanks to his technological skills, serves precisely to attract his father’s attention. Its presence, moreover, highlights the contrast between two very different relationships. With Adèle, Assane has the chance to start from scratch; with Raoul, however, he faces years of accumulated disappointment on the part of his son. The affection he feels for both of them is not enough to erase the pain caused by his constant absences.
Why Does Raoul Betray Assane?
Eventually, at the end of this installment, Assane believes his two children are kidnapped by Hubert Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre) and agrees to hand over the French Crown Jewels. However, he soon discovers that the kidnapping was staged by Raoul himself. And why does the boy betray Assane? Well, unfortunately, he feels neglected by a father who always prioritizes his plans. And Adèle’s arrival intensifies that feeling, since Assane builds with her a link that the boy never felt was his. So Pellegrini takes advantage of that emptiness to add it to your plan. In this way, Assane’s historical enemy allies himself with his son, and the two leave together in a helicopter.
The Kidnapping and the Betrayal
Adèle and Raoul get kidnapped by masked men. And who’s behind it? None other than Hubert Pellegrini, who apparently escaped from that prison in Kuala Lumpur. Because of course he did. This man does not stay down.
Pellegrini wants the treasure in exchange for the kids. Assane agrees immediately. No hesitation. He’s not about to let his children die over some gold.
But here’s where things get truly messed up.
When Assane gets to the exchange point, he sees Adèle wearing a bomb vest. Terrifying, right? But that’s not the worst part. The worst part is finding out that Raoul has been working with Pellegrini this whole time.
I’m sorry, what?
Yes. Raoul. Assane’s son. The kid he’s been trying to protect. He betrayed his own father. He helped Pellegrini escape from prison. He gave him ten thousand euros to make it happen. He set all of this up.
And why? Because he saw Assane being happy with Adèle and Juliette and he couldn’t handle it. He was jealous. He was angry. He felt abandoned. And honestly? I get it. Assane has been a terrible father in so many ways. He’s been absent, he’s lied, he’s broken promises. Raoul has every right to be furious.
But helping your father’s worst enemy? Setting a trap that could get him killed? That’s a whole other level. That’s crossing a line you can’t come back from.
Does Assane Die At The End Of “Lupin” – Season 4?
It should be noted that, when the police shoot at the helicopter, Assane lunges in front of Raoul, and he receives a bullet in the chest. After this, Claire (Ludivine Sagnier), Benjamin (Antoine Gouy), Juliette, and Adèle run towards him, but the season closes without confirming if he survives. In that sense, an eventual fifth delivery from fiction will decide if our protagonist is still alive and if Raoul can find his way back to him.

And, even with Assane alive, the underlying conflict would still stand, since the boy still needs a father to trust. On the other hand, it remains to be seen if the boy will continue to side with Pellegrini, given that the anger that led him to join him could also cause him to change posture later. Also, the image of his father bleeding on the ground as the helicopter takes off, i hardly leave him alone. Finally, the consequences of theft and the role of the Guardians are other possible areas for future plots. And you, are you excited about the idea of seeing more episodes from the television show?
What’s Happening to Claire and Benjamin?
During Assane’s years in prison, Claire and Benjamin fell in love and lived together. Assane finds out after he is released from prison, and initially avoids confronting them. When the friend admits his feelings for Claire, the two confront each other and maintain their bond. This personal story explains why Assane’s return does not amount to a simple return to his previous life.
Who Pushed Sofia Belkacem Into the Museum?
It was Raoul. The boy had gone to the museum to investigate the impostor and, seeing Captain Belkacem pointing the weapon at what her father believed, impulsively pushed her. Belkacem ends up in a coma; once he recovers, he reconstructs the events with Youssef Guédira. The revelation adds a real risk: Raoul can be prosecuted for what happened, becoming even more vulnerable to blackmail from his father’s enemies.
What Role Do Juliette Pellegrini and the Crown Jewels Have?
Adèle wants Assane’s help in recovering the French Crown Jewels from a group of wealthy caretakers interested in keeping them. Juliette Pellegrini is behind this initiative and is also Adèle’s mother. The theft brings Assane into a web of interests, secrets, and family relationships that culminates in the blackmail of the latest episode. Hubert, who escaped from prison in Malaysia, presents himself as an ally of the keepers and exploits Raoul against the protagonist.
The Meaning of the Last Scene and What Remains Open?
Part 4 tests Assane’s desire to stop stealing and make up for lost time with his family. His sacrifice for Raoul reiterates this priority, but it is precisely the rift with his son that makes the trap possible. His survival and the future of his relationship with Raoul remain unanswered: these are open questions, not official announcements of a new season.
What I Need to See in Season 5
Netflix hasn’t confirmed season 5 yet, but after that finale, they’d be crazy not to renew. Here’s what I need to see:
Assane’s recovery—obviously. But I also need to see the aftermath. How does he cope with what Raoul did? How does he move forward?
The Raoul reckoning—this is the big one. Assane and Raoul need to have it out. A real conversation. No lies, no deceptions. Just two people who have hurt each other trying to figure out if there’s anything left to salvage.
Pellegrini’s endgame – He’s back and he’s more dangerous than ever. What’s his next move? How does Assane stop him this time?
Claire’s role—She’s been in the background for a lot of this. But now that her son has done something truly terrible, how does she handle it? Where does her loyalty lie?
Adèle’s journey—She’s Assane’s daughter. That secret is out now. What does that mean for her? How does she fit into all of this?
Final Thoughts
The Lupin season 4 finale is a lot. It’s emotional, it’s devastating, and it ends on a note that leaves you desperate for more.
Assane’s story has always been about more than just the heists. It’s about fatherhood, about trying to be a good person when the world makes it impossible. The finale takes those themes and pushes them to their breaking point.
Whatever happens next, one thing is clear: Assane has failed his son in ways that can’t be easily fixed. And that failure might cost him everything.
But this is Lupin. Nothing is ever truly over. There’s always another trick, another disguise, another clever plan. Maybe Assane can find a way to make things right.
Or maybe some bridges can’t be rebuilt once they’ve been burned.
Either way, I’ll be here waiting for season 5. And I’ll probably be rewatching this finale at least three more times because I clearly have no self-control.
