Ironically, it’s his murderous nature that loathes Joe, who soon begins to dream of being with other women. Merienne, his patron saint at the library where he volunteers, is a strong but troubled single mother for whom Joe is starting to develop feelings. However, to protect her from love, he keeps his romantic engagement with Merienne well hidden.

Joe’s wife has discovered her secrets before and is doing it this time too. After realizing that they are planning to run away together, she puts Joe to sleep and calls unsuspecting Merienne into their house with the intention of revealing Joe’s dark secrets and murdering him. Under Joe’s horrified gaze, his plan for a “happy life” with Merienne goes up in smoke when Love reveals to him the crimes he has committed.

Once Love is sure she’s convinced Merienne, she steps forward, intending to stab her with a carving fork. Joe remains helpless, paralyzed, and can only watch Merienne wait for her death without knowing it. A knock on the door interrupts Love, and Merienne’s violent murder is avoided by her young daughter Juliette.

Once recovered, Joe tries to find Merienne . After imagining a perfect life with her, he continues to cling to the hope of meeting her one day and picking up their relationship where it left off. His romantic musings are not disturbed by the fact that Merienne suspects him of being a killer and that she is probably trying to hide from him.

Although she initially had feelings for him, it seems Merienne is well and truly done with Joe. She always claimed to never want to break up her marriage, and when she found out that Joe was planning to run away from Love to be with her, she decided not to run away with our hero. Of course, the fact that he may be a murderer also helps keep her away. Therefore, it’s clear that Merienne and Joe won’t end up together, and it’s unlikely that Joe will ever see her again, or maybe in Season 4 of You.
