Months go by, and weeks before the case is supposed to be archived, a DNA marker discovery helps investigators track down Massimo Giuseppe Bossetti, who turns out to be a 100% match. The trial lasts a year, after which he is sentenced to life in prison. Yara’s parents watch Letizia with relief, and the film ends with captions describing how Bossetti has repeatedly appealed the verdict, without success.
Therefore, at the end of Yara all fingers point to Bossetti as the one who attacked Yara, resulting in her death. It seems that there are many signs that point to the guilt of man. However, the most damning evidence against him is that which links him to the DNA sample found on Yara’s clothes. The unidentified person who has the same DNA as that found on Yara’s clothes is codenamed “Unknown 1”. As this term becomes synonymous with the criminal responsible for the girl’s death, when Bossetti is found to be “Unknown 1,” it is essentially confirmed that he is the killer.
The film maintains a dark and almost detached tone, which effectively underscores the heartbreaking events depicted. Perhaps one of the most frustrating and heartbreaking aspects of the matter is the long intervals between discoveries.
