Y: The Last Man: Release Date and Star Cast What We Know About Post-Apocalyptic Series

Y The Last Man After Hulu Everything When It Premiere On Disney+ | Y: L'ultimo Uomo

Y: The Last Man, the post-apocalyptic series based on the comic by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, will arrive on Disney + on September 22nd. Here’s what you need to know before you start watching the series. The television series Y: The Last Man is highly anticipated, inspired by the popular graphic novel by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, already available in the United States on Hulu from 13 September. In the rest of the world, including Italy, the show will arrive on Disney +, in the Star division, on 22 September.

The Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra series, made up of 60 albums and released under the DC Comics Vertigo label, is a mainstay of American comics. For this very reason, it was only a matter of time before the story was adapted into a TV series or movie for the big screen. Y: The Last Man tells of a post-apocalyptic society hit by an unexpected catastrophe. All creatures possessing the Y chromosome are suddenly decimated. The only survivors are artist Yorick Brown and his trained monkey, Ampersand.

Y The Last Man

The survivors, all genetically women (and therefore in possession of only the X chromosome), must work to try to understand the origin of the tragedy and rebuild society after the disaster. How to ensure the survival of the species? The only hope seems to lie in Yorick, but will researchers and scientists be able to find a solution before it’s too late?

How Many Episodes Will The Series Consist Of?

Readers of the comic series have long been waiting for a live-action transposition of the interesting story. In 2015, a willingness to adapt the comic was announced, but that project, which would have seen Michael Green at the helm as a screenwriter, never went through. The production has encountered several problems, with Eliza Clark taking over as screenwriter only in 2019, the stop due to the pandemic and the recast of the main actors in 2020.

We can therefore say that the series that we will see from 22 September on Disney + is a completely new project compared to the starting one, a show that, hopefully, will achieve the hoped-for success and will continue for a few years. Eliza Clarke has already stated that she has plans for five or six seasons, but for the moment, pending the eventual renewal, we must be content with the 10 episodes that make up the first.

The first 3 are available on Hulu from September 13, while the following will be added to the catalog weekly. The season finale will arrive on November 1st on Hulu. In Italy, as well as in other countries where the series will be added the Star catalog, Y: The Last Man will be available in streaming from 22 September with a premiere of three episodes. Weekly appointments will follow until 10 November.

The Cast And Characters

  • Ben Schnetzer (Happy Town) plays the protagonist of the series, Yorick Brown, a budding artist who, for some strange reason, manages to survive the event that cut the world’s population in half. Yorick dreams of being reunited with his girlfriend who, at the time of the disaster, is in the Australian desert regions.
  • Ashley Romans (Shameless) is Agent 355, a brave woman who is part of a mysterious organization called the Culper Ring. The association has existed for hundreds of years, so much so that it has been at the service of every president of the United States since the office of George Washington. Agent 355 is an expert and lethal marksman. She doesn’t tolerate fools, but she is forced to when she is assigned the role of Yorick Brown’s bodyguard.
  • Diane Lane (Unfaithful Love) lends her face to Jennifer Brown, mother of Yorick and Hero Brown and a member of the United States House of Representatives. On the death of the president, she is the one who holds the coveted position, realizing the dream she had been holding in her drawer for some time. This fundamental detail will not escape those who have already read the comics and know their history well. In the work of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, Jennifer never becomes president. Now that she is the most important woman in the country, Jennifer is forced to watch her back: she can’t trust anyone.
  • Olivia Thirlby (Goliath) is Hero Brown. The protagonist’s sister, a paramedic by profession, gets into trouble when she joins some sort of sect that hates men.
  • Juliana Canfield (Succession) plays Beth Deville, the woman Yorick has been in love with since high school. In the comic series, Beth’s fate – who is in Australia at the time of the catastrophe – is left uncertain for a very long time. In the television series we will instead see the difficulties that Beth goes through and the sense of guilt of the survivors that grips her when she believes that Yorick died along with the other men.
  • Diana Bang (Resident Alien) plays Doctor Allison Mann. She is one of the absolute protagonists of the comic series, a geneticist expert in cloning charged with finding a solution to the imminent extinction of mankind.

The Original Characters Absent In The Comics

Although inspired by the comic of the same name, Y: The Last Man stands out from the paper saga for the addition of some original characters who will have a crucial role in unraveling the events.

  • Elliot Fletcher (Shameless) plays Sam Jordan, a trans man who has no counterpart in the comics. Through her figure, the series will try to deepen a topic that is very current: the discussion between gender identity and biological sex around transgender people. In an extreme narrative context like that of Y: The Last Man, trans women die together with all the owners of the Y chromosome, while trans men manage to survive the massacre. The show will therefore try to answer the question: in what perspective will trans men be framed in the new matriarchal society?
  • Marin Ireland (Sneaky Pete) is Nora Brady, a press advisor to the President of the United States. After dedicating her life and career to serving men less intelligent than her, she can make her voice heard. Nora struggles to safeguard the fate of humanity as she tries to raise her pre-teen daughter on her own after losing her husband and son.
  • Amber Tamblyn (Joan of ArcadiaHouse) is Kimberly Campbell Cunningham, daughter of the President of the United States and author of bestselling books. Devastated by the sudden disappearance of her family, Kimberley finds it difficult to adapt to the new society and because of this she clashes with Jennifer Brown.
