Wilderness Ending Explained: What Happens to Will? Does Liv and Will Stay Together?
From 15 September 2023, it Will be available in the Prime Video catalog Wilderness (of which you can find our review), a six-part TV series based on the novel of the same name by BE Jones. The protagonist of the show is the British couple formed by Liv (Jenna Coleman) and Will (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), who recently moved to New York for his job. Everything seems to be going swimmingly in their new life until Liv discovers that Will is having an extramarital affair with co-worker Cara (Ashley Benson). The woman thus plans to take revenge on her unfaithful husband during their trip to the Grand Canyon but Will soon have to revise her plans: during an excursion in Yosemite National Park, in fact, the couple unexpectedly meets Cara, accompanied by her boyfriend Garth (Eric Balfour).
If you have already seen the series created by Marnie Dickens, you Will know that it Will be Cara, and not Will, who becomes the victim of Liv’s thirst for revenge: the latter, in fact, after reading a message on her husband’s phone in which the lover invited him to meet in the forest at night to escape together, he goes there. Here, on the edge of a precipice, she sees a figure from behind wearing Will‘s red raincoat and pushes her thinking that it is her husband. However, it was Cara who, after a brief hospitalization, lost her life. Her boyfriend Garth is initially accused of her death and, after being released, he goes to the home of the couple who had made statements against him; in fact, he understands that something doesn’t add up. But what happens next and, above all, Will the truth about Cara’s death come out? All that remains is to examine the events of the last episode in our Wilderness ending explained.
Wilderness: The Story Plot
Wilderness follows the story of a seemingly perfect couple whose “happily ever after” life takes a dark turn. As the series unfolds, viewers are taken on a gripping journey filled with suspense, drama, and unexpected twists. The series expertly blends elements of drama and thriller to create a unique and engaging viewing experience. Liv (Jenna Coleman) and Will Taylor (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) seem like the perfect couple: married for just over a year, they have just moved from their native England to the United States for their career. Everything seems to be going swimmingly: in the first scenes, we see them together aboard a blue Mustang crossing the desert towards the Grand Canyon, excited for the first holiday together of their new life.
Too bad that not all that glitters is gold: Liv is planning the “accidental” death of her husband after discovering his betrayal with one of her new colleagues, Cara (Ashley Benson). But the woman’s plans will be derailed a bit in the face of a series of unexpected events and second thoughts: the unexpected arrival of Cara, accompanied by her boyfriend Garth (Eric Balfour), will lead her to reevaluate the whole situation. When the four find themselves in Yosemite Park, something completely unexpected happens, which Liv hadn’t planned, and which will radically change the course of her life.
Wilderness Ending Explained: A Second Murder?
At the end of the fifth episode of the show, we see how Garth’s – not very friendly – visit to the couple’s home also ends in blood. Convinced that the couple knows something about his girlfriend’s death, the man shows up at their door with a gun to threaten them; after a scuffle with Liv in which Garth tries to strangle her, however, the woman hits him several times with a stone until he kills him. At the beginning of the sixth episode of the show, therefore, the two find themselves again in the police station for Garth’s death, only to be released within a few hours. The two thus return home despite the apartment being completely upside down due to the fight and the intervention of the forensics team.
Does Liv and Will Stay Together?
To try to save their marriage and put everything behind him (the two deaths and his numerous betrayals) Will tells his wife that he has asked for an immediate transfer to the London branch, with departure scheduled for the weekend. Liv, however, tired of her husband’s constant lies, wants to ask for a divorce from her. An unacceptable implication for Will, who thinks he has the right to dispose of his wife’s life and therefore decides to threaten her: if she left him, he would go to the police to declare that Liv deliberately killed Garth and it wasn’t a crime. legitimate defense. Thus, the two, at least apparently, remain together and participate in the office party for Will‘s transfer. Here, Liv meets another of her husband’s many lovers, Marissa, and after having argued with the man again,
What Was Liv’s New Plan?
Once she returns home, in the middle of the night, we see Liv at the computer intent on transferring files to a USB stick. She then waits for her husband to get up and hides her phone with the recording function active under some sheets. The two start a conversation in which she remembers the good old days and he admits that he ruined everything. Playing cunningly, Liv also leads him to admit that her defense against Garth was only self-defense. The scene then moves to the airport, where the couple is ready to board for London. Right during the check-in, however, a policeman stops them asking them to follow him: a video has arrived showing Will and Cara in bed together, thus bringing to light the relationship between the two and making the man the main suspect for the death of a colleague. Liv appears surprised and upset at the sight of the images, but we know that, in reality, she already knows everything. It is clear, therefore, that it was she who sent the video to the police to frame her husband.
What Happens to Will?
While Will is questioned about why he didn’t previously admit his relationship with Cara, Liv also releases a new statement. Pretending to be upset and taking on the role of a devoted wife, she says that she had lied during previous interrogations about the woman’s death because Will had asked her to do so: in reality, he had spent the night of the murder out and had returned in their hotel room – with a soaked shirt and a detached attitude – only at 6:30 in the morning. Meanwhile, admitting that the red windbreaker Cara was wearing that fateful night was his, Will is permanently jailed for the woman’s murder.
Does Liv Get Away with It?
While in Central Park with her neighbor, Liv receives a call from her husband from prison. She decides to go and see him, and, during their confrontation, she discovers that he is aware that she killed Cara. The man remembers that when Garth attacked them at home, she apologized to him. The woman, under her breath, admits everything about her, declaring that she has always been aware of her relationship with Cara, that she has lied to him throughout the trip, and that she has devised this revenge plan so that she could serve as a lesson to him. When Will then asks her why she killed Cara, Liv replies that she thought it was him. This drives the man into a rage, and he is taken away while he attempts to attack his now ex-wife.
Sometime later we find Liv in that same hotel in Yosemite National Park where it all began, or rather ended. You have written a book, of which you read the preface as narrator:
The offended wife, the irrational woman, the harpy, the crazy female: I am all of them and all of them are part of me. I’m your ordinary woman, I’m your heroine, I’m your villain, I’m whoever you want me to be. Or I was.
We then see her return to the place in the middle of the forest where she pushed Cara, mistaking her for Will because of the red raincoat. While she is intent on looking down from the precipice, a hiker arrives and invites her to be careful because, right at that point, a woman whom she calls a “stupid girl” has lost her life. Liv, now disgusted by men’s attitude of superiority, replies:
It certainly must have been her fault, too much make-up, too flirtatious, without a man to accompany her, she must certainly have asked for it. Where does all this end? When she gets beyond all endurance. So, what happens? We become something horrifying, we transform into your executioners.
Wilderness 2: Will it Happen?
At the moment there is no news regarding a possible renewal (or cancellation) of the series. However, we think there would be enough material for a second season of Wilderness. Will knows that it was his wife who killed Cara and may hire private investigators to uncover the truth. At the same time, Liv seems to have established a romantic relationship with her neighbor, which could find a sequel in the new episodes. Finally, the woman, during the interview with Will in prison, had confessed to her husband that she was pregnant, but it is never clarified whether it is true and whether it is just her umpteenth lie.
