Why Does Sauron Look Different in The Rings of Power Season 2 Trailer?

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, promises to continue the story of the origins of the powerful rings and finally free Sauron. Sauron’s very different appearance in the second season of The Rings of Power is the basis of an important story in JRR Tolkien’s mythology. After months of speculation about the identity of Sauron in Amazon’s Middle-earth television series, the Season 1 finale of The Rings of Power revealed that Charlie Vickers’ Halbrand is the famed Dark Lord from The Lord of the Rings. Sauron had been missing since the fall of Morgoth at the end of the First Age, and many thought the villain was gone forever. Alas, Sauron made his grand return in the guise of a mortal man who claimed the Southlands. Halbrand would indeed rule the Southlands, but only after renaming the realm “Mordor”.

Charlie Vickers’ Sauron returns in the Rings of Power season 2 trailer, but only after changing his name. The Enemy first appears after Galadriel’s narration declares, “I believe he has always been here among us,” but this time he sports flowing golden hair that even Legolas would envy two pointed ears, and impressive new armor. Sauron reappears near the end of the trailer wearing regal robes and surrounded by elves with swords aimed at his handsome face. Sauron’s style in The Rings of Power Season 2 is certainly a far cry from Halbrand’s rugged aesthetic, but there’s a canon reason behind this change.

Sauron Will Likely Use His “Annatar” Disguise in The Rings of Power Season 2

In JRR Tolkien’s Legend of Middle-earth, Sauron tricks the elves into making the Rings of Power by posing as an elf and calling himself “Annatar”. Tolkien described Annatar as a handsome and “loyal” disguise, and the smooth, blond, angelic Sauron from the Rings of Power season 2 trailer certainly fits that bill. The drastic change in appearance, then, is entire because Sauron went from “Halbrand” to “Annatar”, masquerading as an elf rather than a man.

Sauron’s sudden change is possible because, until the end of the Second Age of Middle-earth, the Dark Lord possesses the innate ability to shape-shift. This power was removed from Eru, the God of Tolkien’s universe, long before The Lord of the Rings, but this punishment has not yet been meted out during the Rings of Power era. Likely, Sauron has not yet returned to full form after Morgoth’s defeat, but the villain has enough energy in The Rings of Power to change his appearance and enter Eregion to facilitate the creation of the remaining Rings of Power.

Sauron as Annatar Creates the Very Premise of The Rings of Power

The goal of Sauron, who passes himself off as “Annatar”, is to complete the task begun in season 1 of The Rings of Power, when the three elven rings were forged. Seven rings have yet to be created for dwarves and nine for mortals, but Celebrimbor already knows that he must keep an eye on Sauron’s “Halbrand” form. The only way Sauron can make Celebrimbor prepare more rings is by wearing a new facade. Not only can the elven Sauron restart the forge, but it allows him to roam freely around Eregion without arousing suspicion.

In the end, of course, Sauron’s ploy is to slip away and create the One Ring in Mordor, dominating the wills of the other Rings of Power. If season 2 of The Rings of Power covers Sauron’s transformation into Annatar, then the birth of the One Ring cannot be far away, which makes it possible that the first appearance of the famous golden trinket from The Lord of the Rings is the shocking final scene of season 2, which will open up the third season.

The origin of the Rings of Power and the One Ring is the central premise of the Amazon television series “The Rings of Power,” but the first season left it largely unsolved. The three elven rings only became a narrative element at the end, and none of their counterparts in Sauron’s larger line of jewels have been glimpsed. Annatar’s arrival in Season 2 is a strong indication that The Rings of Power is finally living up to the promise of its name.
