The Rings of Power Season 2: Who is Círdan and Why He Matters?
Who is Círdan and Why Does He Matters? Spoilers ahead for the first few episodes of The Rings of Power Season 2, now available on Prime Video. The second season of The Rings of Power has to deal with the deception of Sauron, who manages to convince Galadriel that he is a simple human and help him reach Celebrimbor to start working on his new project, the Rings of Power. Galadriel (played by actress Morfydd Clarke) has lost the battle and is determined to set things right and believes she can use the three rings created by Celebrimbir, which were untouched by Sauron, to do so. But Elrond believes that this is all still part of Sauron’s plan and decides to take the rings and flee with them, to enlist the help of an elf to decide what to do with them. Elrond arrives at the door of an elf who plays a key role in Tolkien’s stories and who fans have been waiting to see since the first season.
The Rings of Power Season 2: Who is Círdan?
Círdan, played by Ben Daniels, is the elf who is dedicated to building ships, but who is also very wise and that is why Elrodn believes that he can help him make a decision about what to do with these rings, which Galadriel wants to recover to use against Sauron. Círdan is not only a shipwright, which is already a very important role for the elves, he is also the Master of the Grey Havens, which is the region of Lindon from which the elves depart when they seek to return to Valinor (Galadriel passed through there when she herself was going to return to Valinor, but changes her mind, jumps off the ship and stays to search for Sauron, who now calls himself Annatar).
He is a wise elf with a gift of clairvoyance that was granted to him by The Valar, and this is why Elrond seeks him out to talk about the rings, but Círdan, as happens with Galadriel, discovers that the three rings that were not touched by Sauron could be of great help for the battle that is about to begin, so he decides not to destroy them and even goes so far as to use one of the 3, called Narya.
From here on there are more spoilers about the future of The Rings of Power and the character of Círdan:
With the ring, Círdan becomes one of the lieutenants of the army of King Gil-Galad, who also has one of the rings, and participates in the battle of the elves and men against Sauron, he is even present when the ring of power passes into the hands of Isildur and he is faced with the difficult decision of destroying it at Mount Doom or keeping it and trying to use it for the benefit of men, which is what ends up destroying him. The Lord of the Rings Fandom site describes him this way: Círdan, also known as Nowë and Círdan the Shipwright, was one of the highest and noblest of the Sindar, Lord of the Falathrim during the First Age and Lord of the Grey Havens during the Second, Third, and Fourth Ages. He was one of the wisest and most far-sighted of the Elves and in the Second Age the oldest known Elf in Middle-earth, a status he remained throughout that age and into the Fourth Age. He was also given Narya, one of the Three Rings, by Celebrimbor, until he gave it to Gandalf.
