What If…? Episode 5: Ending Explained Will There Be A Part 2? Find All Answers

Episode 5 of the MCU animated series introduced zombies to the universe. This particular episode is more inspired by Marvel Comics than the previous four episodes. In a series that is literally called “What If…?”, Head writer AC Bradley has a lot of creative freedom, but for Episode 5, she drew a good deal of the plot from the source material.

The story examines what would have happened if Janet Van Dyne had been infected with a quantum virus, which was introduced into the world after Hank Pym saved his long-lost love. Unknowingly, Hope Van Dyne brings her infected mother back through the Quantum Tunnel, and the virus spreads throughout the Pacific Northwest within 24 hours. The fallout from this turn of events is catastrophic and is changing the world of the MCU as we know it. If you have any questions regarding the ending of Episode 5 of What If? We tell you everything!

What If…? Episode 5 Ending Explained

Earlier in the episode, we learn that the Avengers attempted to help fight the virus and tried to control the chaos caused by it. However, the majority of the heroes have been transformed into zombies, including Hawkeye, Captain America, Falcon, Iron Man, and Doctor Strange. During episode 5 of What If, we learn that Wanda has also transformed into a zombie and is immune to the cure.

Vision had fed her parts of T’Challa and had protected her. He quickly realizes his mistake and separates himself from the Spirit Stone so that the surviving heroes can use it to heal the virus. The Spirit Stone acts as the Soul of the Android Vision Body, and it is effectively killed upon removal.

A horde of zombies attacks the building, making it difficult for the heroes to escape. At that time, Okoye also died. Wanda kills Bucky and Bruce transforms into the Hulk to fight her. Only Peter, T’Challa and Lang manage to escape in a QuadJet. The last time we see the Hulk, he’s overwhelmed by zombies. We can assume that he died or turned into a zombie. Episode 5 ends with a zombified Thanos wielding all of the Infinity Stones except one in front of the Wakanda.

The circumstances are dire, and a disturbing voice-over from the Guardian seems to confirm that the heroes’ attempt to save their planet ends up destroying the universe. So we can say that Thanos gathers all the Infinity Stones and becomes the bearer of this destruction.

Will There Be A Part 2?

The way episode 5 of What If…? ends on a cliffhanger, many of us wonder if there will be a second part to this story, and it is entirely possible. While we’re not sure if we’ll see a second part this season, we do know that What If…? is already in preparation. And it’s pretty much confirmed that there will be another episode of Captain Carter in season 2, so why not have another zombie episode in season 2 as well?

However, this cliffhanger is so full of suspense that we wouldn’t be surprised to have a second part in season 1. Episode 6 of What If…? could it be “What If…. Zombies Part 2? As Marvel has been careful not to reveal too much ahead of the episodes’ release, it’s hard to know for sure what will come next. But a second part seems necessary to continue this story. As the Infinity Gauntlet’s final stone repels zombies, there’s a chance Thanos the zombie won’t be able to get it back, even if he manages to defeat the heroes protecting it.

And if the zombie Thanos gets the stone, what will he do with it? All of the other zombie characters didn’t seem to be aware of who they are or who their friends are with, so does the zombie Thanos have some kind of heightened awareness? Hopefully a second part will shed some light on the truth.
