Werewolf By Night: What is Bloodstone? Here is Complete Info About Powers and Origin
While most of the attention in Werewolf by Night will be on characters like Jack Russell, Elsa Bloodstone, and Man-Thing, an artifact called Bloodstone is just as important to Marvel Studios ‘ special presentation. Werewolf by Night features black and white tones reminiscent of classic horror stories, leaving the only color on display being the glowing red of the Bloodstone.
If you’re curious about the Marvel Cinematic Universe Bloodstone, comics are a good place to start. We retrace his early history, his connection with the Bloodstone Family and much more.
Werewolf By Night: What is Bloodstone?
The Bloodstone and Ulysses Bloodstone both debuted in 1975 in Marvel Presents # 1 by John Werner, Mike Vosburg, Bob McLeod, Diane Buscemi, Tom Orzechowski and Len Wein. He began his career in Marvel Comics under the name of Bloodgem and, like the Infinity Stones, has undergone a name change as time has passed. The Bloodstone fell to Earth in the prehistoric era and was found by a random human who has gained unique abilities such as increased intelligence, strength and stamina. The human took the name of Ulysses and was also able to spot monsters thanks to Bloodstone.
An alien also came to Earth in search of the Bloodstone to obtain its cosmic powers. Instead, the Bloodstone lodged itself in Odysseus’ chest, who in turn began to hunt down the alien. Their feud would continue to the present day, with Ulysses dying while hunting the alien.
The Bloodstone Family
After Ulysses died, the Bloodstone split into two distinct parts. Ulysses’ daughter Elsa took the larger piece, while younger brother Cullen received the smaller piece of the Stone. Elsa Bloodstone was created by Dan Abnett and Michael Lopez in the 2001 issue of Bloodstone. She became the resident monster slayer of the Marvel Universe and recently starred opposite Deadpool in her most recent series. Some of Elsa’s most notable appearances were those in Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen’s cult series Nextwave and Fearless Defenders by Cullen Bunn and Will Sliney.
Cullen Bloodstone was created by Dennis Hopeless and Kev Walker in 2012’s Avengers Arena, a Hunger Games-style series that pitted several young heroes against each other in an arcade-orchestrated game. Unlike Elsa, Cullen was cursed by the Bloodstone fragment, which transformed him into a giant monster. Death of Doctor Strange: Bloodstone #1 reunites the Bloodstones, joined by a new sister named Lyra, from Ulysses hundreds of years earlier. She was taken from Earth by the same aliens that Ulysses was chasing.
Bloodstone in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Viewers are introduced to Bloodstone in Werewolf by Night when the hunters are told they must find it attached to the monster they are hunting. The monster in question was Man-Thing, whom Jack Russell was trying to free. Jack managed to free Man-Thing with the help of Elsa Bloodstone, but both ended up prisoners. Elsa’s stepmother Verusa uses the Bloodstone to force Jack to transform. Jack manages to control his animalistic urges to attack only Verusa’s forces and, together with Elsa, comes out victorious, with a little bloodshed.
