It is a miniseries featuring Special Agent Kyle, who finds himself investigating the disappearance of a girl named Lucy Cook. Who killed her? And who is his real father? Kyle recently lost his son Caleb and is dealing with his loss. Therefore, when he receives the call to investigate Lucy’s death by suicide, the man agrees to do justice. Things get out of hand, however, and a meth lab is discovered in the caves of Yosemite National Park. Various people die, and chaos engulfs the federal officer, who ends up assaulting Shane, a boy. He thinks the latter is guilty of Lucy’s death when he finds a video of her on her cell phone. Created by Mark L. Smith and Elle Smith, “Untamed” is a Netflix miniseries that follows Kyle Turner (Eric Bana), a special agent of the National Park Service who is dedicated to imposing human law on wild nature, while investigating the brutal death of an unidentified young woman who fell from the top of El Capitan, the 914-meter-high rock formation overlooking Yosemite.
What happened to her? What secrets are hidden behind his death? In the thriller directed by Neasa Hardiman and Nick Murphy, after the appearance of the body, Special Agent Turner suspects that it was not an accident and that the truth is hidden deep in Yosemite. Although Kyle prefers to work alone, he is forced to receive support from Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago), a former Los Angeles Police Department agent and now a rookie ranger. Turner and his new partner discover the first clues after following the route the victim took before reaching the top of El Capitan. The animals of Yosemite National Park did not chase the NN; it was someone else’s escape, someone who shot him in the leg. Even though his superiors pressure him to solve the case, since he couldn’t do it six years ago when Sean Sanderson disappeared, the protagonist of “Untamed” refuses to share information before confirming his suspicions.
Untamed: Summary Recap
The miniseries “Untamed” takes us to the majestic Yosemite National Park, where the discovery of a woman hanging from a rope marks the beginning of a complex investigation by special agent Kyle Turner. What begins as an apparent suicide quickly turns into a multi-layered murder case: drug trafficking, unresolved disappearances, buried family conflicts, and secrets dating back more than a decade. Kyle, still marked by the tragic death of his son Caleb, finds himself immersed in a case that confronts him not only with a criminal network that operates among the abandoned tunnels of the park, but also with the ghosts of his past. Together with the newly arrived ranger Naya Vásquez, he will try to discover what happened to the young Lucy Cook, whose identity connects directly with a missing children’s camp and a drug trafficking network that uses the park as a distribution route.
The plot of the TV series goes on with Kyle, who believes Shane killed Lucy, after finding a video of him on Lucy’s phone. Furthermore, it also takes into account the fact that the boy is the only one, other than drug dealers, to live in the woods with a shotgun. Kyle is suspended from office, but decides to confront Shane anyway, after informing his former assistant Naya and his ex-wife Jill. The man finds pill bottles with the same branding spotted on Lucy’s wrist in the boy’s tent. At this point, though, the wildlife management officer shoots Kyle in the stomach. Luckily, he arrives on site Naya, who manages to track down the agent and shoots Shane, killing him. Kyle is taken to the hospital and survives. Meanwhile, he is informed that there may have been an agreement between Lucy and Shane. Kyle speculates that things went wrong between them and that Shane eventually killed Lucy.
We discover that in the past, a man, Sean, kidnapped and killed Caleb, Kyle, and Jill’s son. Shane’s cameras had caught Sean chasing the child. Jill asked her ex-husband to kill the killer. In the end, she was the one who killed Sean, and Kyle felt betrayed, so much so that their marriage ended. Now that past decision is also ruining Jill’s current relationship with Scott. It is not known whether in the end the latter decides to leave or accept what the woman did, helping her deal with the pain. Jill lets Kyle know she’ll be fine, so it looks like her relationship is still standing. But did Shane really kill Lucy? No.
Untamed Ending Explained: What Really Happened To Lucy and Who Murdered Caleb?
Vásquez discovers that the victim is Lucy Cook, who disappeared when she was little. This is a case that Turner investigated in the past. At the time, he thought that the culprit was the little girl’s father. After discovering that Lucy did not die, at least not when she was a child, she feels guilty for not finding out the truth, since Rory was murdered in a bar fight because they believe he is guilty of hurting his daughter. Lucy’s death is not only connected to that old case that has haunted Turner for years, but also related to a drug trafficking ring. When Kyle questions the squatters, they refuse to answer, but the ISB agent sets a trap for one of them and gets him to take them to his hideout in the mines. Although they arrive at the scene, an explosion complicates things. While investigating this case that hides several secrets, Turner and Vásquez deal with their problems.
The latter arrived at Yosemite after escaping from her abusive husband. Even though she has a restraining order, the police officer does not stop harassing her. One night, he shows up at Naya’s house and threatens to take her son away from her if she does not testify in his favor in the case for which he lost his license. For its part, Turner deals with the pain of losing his son Caleb and the guilt of not being able to protect him. The little boy disappeared in the forest and was murdered by a mysterious man. After Caleb’s death, Kyle separated from his wife, Jill (Rosemary DeWitt), and began drinking. He refuses to leave Yosemite so as not to abandon the memory of his son, whom he still imagines. Additionally, Sean Sanderson’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Park. An attorney is investigating whether Turner did a good job or made some mistakes because her son’s death was recent. The lawyer even seeks Jill’s testimony.
Paul’s Version of Lucy’s Death?
Shane was guilty of involving Lucy in the drug trade in Yosemite National Park, but not of killing her. Indeed, the culprit is Paul. Lucy was the illegitimate daughter she had with Maggie. The latter was married to Rory, a violent man, and sought comfort in the arms of Paul, who was with Mary. Before she died, suffering from cancer, Maggie asked Paul to remove Lucy from Rory and protect her. The man followed this path, but did not let his daughter into his family. He took her to the Gibbs’ foster home in Nevada and changed her name to Grace.
When Rory was killed during a bar fight, Paul began to think he no longer had responsibilities towards Lucy. The man is convinced that he only has to deal with Mary and Sadie. Lucy ran away from her foster home and returned to Yosemite to get revenge on Paul. The latter declares that every day the girl asked him for money, in exchange for his silence about their secret. Lucy, however, complicated everything by kidnapping Sadie to leave her in the Gibbs’ foster home and let her experience the same dramas as her. Eventually, the girl abandoned Paul’s niece near Maggie’s old home, allowing her to return home.
Paul says today that he then went to Lucy to talk to her, with his hunting rifle. The girl wouldn’t listen to him, and he shot her in the leg. Lucy then jumped from El Capitan to kill herself and was mauled by a ferocious animal. It’s difficult, however, to believe Paul’s version. There is no way for Kyle to understand the truth. What is certain is that Lucy was Paul’s never-recognized daughter. Now he wants to do the right thing and get himself arrested. Ma Paul can’t allow it and kills himself, shooting himself in the head.
A Corpse, A Secret, and a Park Full of Scars?
Thanks to a bracelet found on the victim’s body, Naya manages to identify her as Lucy Cook, a girl who disappeared years ago after the death of her mother and who, against all odds, had returned to the park as a teenager to live among squatters. There, Lucy became involved in a clandestine operation led by a group of traffickers, in which she acted as “mule” transporting mysterious pills marked with a golden X. The discovery of a corpse linked to the leader of the squatters (Grandfather), and the subsequent involvement of a hunter named Shane Maguire, tighten the siege on the trafficking network. Shane had also been key years before in the disappearance of a businessman linked to Caleb’s death, which further complicates the protagonist’s personal and professional ties.
The Truth About Lucy?
The investigation takes a dramatic turn when Kyle discovers that Paul Souter, the chief ranger and his former friend, is actually Lucy’s biological father. Paul had kept his relationship with Maggie, Lucy’s mother, a secret, and after her death, he decided to keep the girl away by sending her under a false identity to a foster home in Nevada. That condemned her to a life of abuse and abandonment. Years later, Lucy returned to Yosemite and began blackmailing Paul, who ended up shooting her in the leg. Seriously injured and with no way out, Lucy fled into the forest, where she was attacked by wild animals before jumping into the void from El Capitan. Paul’s version becomes shrouded in suspicion, but after his confession and before being arrested, he decides to commit suicide in front of Kyle.
The Caleb Case and The Breakup With Jill?
At the same time, we discover that Caleb, Kyle’s son, was murdered by Sean Sanderson, a businessman who disappeared in the park. Jill, Kyle’s ex-wife, unable to bear the pain and slowness of justice, hired Shane to take down Sean. When Kyle discovered the truth, he covered up for Jill, but the betrayal caused their marriage to collapse. Years later, Jill confesses what happened to her current partner, closing that chapter of her life.
The Outcome of Shane and the Rebirth of Kyle?
When Kyle confronts Shane about Lucy’s death, he shoots him. Seriously injured, Kyle is saved by Naya, who kills Shane in a desperate shootout. The evidence found in Shane’s camp suggests that he did have some type of relationship with Lucy, although he was not responsible for her death. Finally, Kyle survives, and after handing over Lucy’s body to receive a funeral according to native rites, he decides to leave Yosemite. He leaves Naya the toys of Caleb and his horse, as a symbol of a new stage and an emotional farewell. For the first time in a long time, Kyle allows himself to imagine a future, albeit an uncertain one, free from the weight of guilt.
Who Murdered Caleb?
In the first episodes of Untamed, Turner does not have a good relationship with Shane Maguire (Wilson Bethel), the park’s wildlife management officer. But not only because he is involved in the drug trafficking case, everything seems to indicate that there is a previous story, and that it also involves Jill. Were they lovers? Although that seems like the first impression, it is something more sinister. Maguire discovered Caleb’s killer thanks to the cameras he placed in the woods. Upon learning that Sean Sanderson had hurt his son, Kyle sought more evidence against him to bring him to justice, but that wasn’t enough for Jill, so she paid Shane to murder the monster that had murdered Caleb. That was the reason why the couple separated. Turner remained silent for years, but warned Jill that after capturing Shane, he could reveal his secret. However, during the chase, Maguire is killed by Vasquez, who was trying to defend Kyle.
What Really Happened to Lucy?
Although it is established that Lucy was involved with the drug trafficking group and that she could have been murdered for betraying them, Turner is sure that the case hides something else. Maguire becomes the main one, and with his death, the case is closed, but Kyle, who was suspended for threatening Shane before their final confrontation, decides to investigate more about Lucy’s true story. After discovering that Rory was not Rory’s real father, Turner follows a lead in Yelton, Nevada. A young man looking to collect a reward identifies Lucy as Grace McRay. Upon arriving at the place, Kyle discovers that Lucy lived there for a while. How did you get to that place? Her biological father took her out of Yosemite, faked her disappearance, and hid her with a pastor’s family.
Chief Ranger Paul Souter (Sam Neill) was Lucy’s father, and he hid it so as not to ruin his marriage. Years after escaping, Lucy returned to Yosemite to extort money from her father. When the young woman exceeded a limit, Paul tried to persuade her in the wrong way and only caused her to think he was trying to kill her, and she decided to jump into the void. At the end of “Untamed”, Turner confronts his Souter, who commits suicide before the story is revealed, and he loses everything. Disappointment and everything he experienced motivated Kyle to leave that place and try to move on. Before leaving, he leaves his horse to Naya and Caleb’s toys to his partner’s son.
