THEM: The Scare: Trailer for Season 2 of the Prime Video Anthology Series

Prime Video has streamed the trailer for THEM: The Scare, the second season of the anthology series created by Little Marvin and produced by Lena Waithe. The first season, subtitled Covenant, was released on the digital platform in 2021. The first season debuted in 2021 and focused on an African American family who moved to a white neighborhood in Los Angeles in the 1950s. The series has received praise for its treatment of themes such as racism but has also generated controversy for some graphic scenes. The Them TV series was born from the collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television. Little Marvin is the creator of the show and also serves as showrunner, as well as executive producing alongside Miri Yoon, Roy Lee, and Steve Prinz.

THEM: The Scare: The Story Plot

THEM: The Scare will once again be set in Los Angeles (the first season, subtitled Covenant, took place in Compton circa 1952, but the story will move to 1991). The plot centers on Detective Dawn Reeve of the LAPD homicide squad, who is assigned a new case: the gruesome murder of a foster mother that has left even the most hardened detectives shaken. In a tumultuous time for Los Angeles, a city on the brink of chaos, Dawn is determined to stop the killer. But as she gets closer to the truth, something disturbing and evil grips her and her family…

The first season of Them (Covenant) was also set in California, specifically in Los Angeles in the early 1950s, where the Emory family became the first black family to settle in Compton. From there, a mix of racial tensions, bigoted neighbors, and supernatural forces within the house itself converged to push the Emorys to the brink of madness and evil. Deborah Ayorinde starred in the first story as Livia “Lucky” Emory and also returns in THEM: The Scare in the lead role of Detective Dawn Reeve.

Controversies

THEM has sparked much controversy over the issue of “black trauma porn” , or the objective practice of exploiting the racial injustices suffered by African Americans as inspiration for horror stories. This brought home the level of real-life horror and fear that the series tapped into, not to mention the show’s disturbing supernatural elements.
