Netflix enriches its collection of true crime docuseries with The Yara Gambirasio Case: Beyond Reasonable Doubt. The production, signed by the same authors of SanPa: Sins of the Savior (another well-known docuseries of the streaming service), consists of five episodes that reconstruct the entire story of the disappearance and murder of Yara Gambirasio. Directed with attention to investigative details, the docuseries explores the procedural errors and uncertainties that characterized the case, shedding new light on the presumed innocence of the only suspect. It was November 26, 2010, when a 13-year-old rhythmic gymnastics enthusiast disappeared into thin air in the town of Brembate di Sopra after stopping by the gym to bring a stereo. And it was February 26, 2011, exactly three months after her disappearance, when the girl’s body was found, by chance, in a field. The girl’s name is Yara Gambirasio and her terrible story, unfortunately, we all know it.

The Yara Case meticulously retraces the investigation into the murder of young Yara, which took place in 2010 in Brembate di Sopra, in the province of Bergamo. Through unpublished testimonies, interviews with experts, and detailed reconstructions, the docuseries highlights the investigative gaps, bringing to light possible injustices against the only suspect, Massimo Giuseppe Bossetti, and therefore a hypothetical lack of justice towards the victim. Key figures such as the prosecutor in the case Letizia Ruggeri and other figures involved in the investigation are critically analyzed, revealing a series of potential errors that influenced the outcome of the trial. Since July 16, the 5-episode Netflix Docu-series dedicated to the case of Yara Gambirasio has been available, the girl who disappeared from home and then found after months. Murdered. Or worse: left to die, injured, alone. In the cold. In the dark.

The tragic story of the murder of Yara Gambirasio is one of the Italian crime stories that has shocked public opinion in our country. Yara, a thirteen-year-old from Brembate di Sopra, disappeared on November 26, 2010, while returning home from the gym; her body was found three months later, on February 26, 2011, in a field in Chignolo d’Isola, a few kilometers from where she disappeared. The investigation moved in particular through a vast search for DNA found on the girl’s underwear, involving thousands of samples in the hope of finding a match. After years of research, on June 16, 2014, Massimo Giuseppe Bossetti, a bricklayer from Mapello, was arrested thanks to a DNA match. Although he always professed his innocence, genetic evidence and other clues led to his definitive sentence of life imprisonment in 2018.

The Yara Case analyzes the facts with a critical and investigative approach. The docuseries raises important questions about how investigations were conducted, highlighting the shortcomings in the procedures followed by the prosecutor. The testimonies collected offer a glimpse into the lives involved and the effects that a case of such resonance can have on the community and individuals. One of the most controversial aspects explored is the issue of DNA evidence. Despite the apparent irrefutability of the genetic traces found, doubts emerge about their management and interpretation.

The Yara Case suggests that other people could have been involved in the affair but were not adequately investigated. This point raises questions about possible miscarriages of justice and the reliability of the conclusions reached, namely the life sentence for Massimo Bossetti, interviewed during the episodes. Each episode is designed to add new elements to the public narrative, maintaining a balance between revelations and critical reflections. The use of archive footage, contemporary interviews, and visual reconstructions creates a balance between past and present that keeps the emotional tension and interest high. The authors manage to make even the most technical aspects of the investigations accessible, making the writing of the docuseries one of its strengths: clear, precise, and rigorous.

As we have already said, the Netflix series is not just a simple true crime documentary, but a work that aims to make the audience reflect deeply on the complexity of investigations and the potential flaws of the Italian judicial system, carefully addressing the accusations of misdirection and suspicions about investigative methods, which continue to raise questions about the justice system of our country. For the first time, Massimo Bossetti – sentenced, let us remember, definitively to life imprisonment for the murder of Yara Gambirasio – has the opportunity to tell his version of the facts, together with his wife Marita Comi. Bossetti has always declared himself innocent, and it seems clear that the subtitle of the series, Beyond any reasonable doubt, aims to launch a sort of provocation, inviting viewers to question his guilt.

The narrative, although complex due to the continuous temporal oscillations, does not limit itself to reconstructing the facts but is committed to revealing the possible errors and inconsistencies of the investigations and trials. It does so by raising doubts about possible alternative paths, exploring the role of the media in shaping public opinion, and placing emphasis on the decisions – not always shared – of the public prosecutor Letizia Ruggeri, which have profoundly influenced the procedural mechanisms of the case. The production company Quarantadue – supported by Netflix – confirms that it is up to a difficult task, that is, to enter a dramatic story of crime news without morbidity and sensationalism, but with a focus very much centered on the reconstruction of the facts and testimonies. As with the work done for SanPa, also in Caso Yara, the careful research of the documentation in favor of the story of such a controversial case is evident.

No less appreciable is the care not only in the writing but also in the direction and in the presentation of fundamental elements that are too often penalized (or even obscured) by the public story of news stories when these become media cases. In this regard, the way in which aspects of Bossetti’s private life have morbidly affected the vision of the case, diminishing the importance of the victim, is explored: Yara Gambirasio has been told too little. The pornography of pain that the media coverage of crime news often encounters (and even seeks) removes humanity from tragedies of this magnitude in favor of an unhealthier story that generates visibility and never information. The Yara Case represents an excellent example of how Netflix manages to treat the true crime genre with depth and quality, demonstrating that it knows how to dig into crime news with the tools necessary to create excellent content.

This accurate narration of the crime of Yara Gambirasio and the investigation to find the culprit is emotionally engaging, even if treated with seriousness and few frills. And more than the current interview with Bossetti, the overlapping of his words spoken in prison shortly after the arrest while the images of the thirteen-year-old funeral scroll by is very strong. A moment of the docuseries that manages to restore the measure of what happened. Without the presumption of knowing and providing a new truth, but simply leaving in the hands of the viewer more elements that help to better understand the complexity of justice and also the complexity of human events… Beyond any reasonable doubt, precisely. This tragic story begins with the disappearance of Yara. But it soon takes a direction that indicates a precise editorial choice: the reconstruction of the searches for Yara, still considered missing, is intertwined with that of the arrest of Massimo Bossetti. That is, before the chronological sequence of events leads to the reconstruction of how Unknown 1 was identified, whose DNA was found on Yara’s – cut – underwear and on her leggings.

The editing has a clear (and legitimate) purpose: to fuel doubt. After three levels of judgment, a thorough investigation with a manhunt – or rather the DNA owner – never seen before in Italy, with the intervention of the President of the Republic to proceed with the exhumation of a body. That of Giuseppe Guerinoni, who died in 1999, the biological father of Unknown 1. Bossetti’s arrest is the starting point of his story, therefore not a starting point in a chronological sense. Updated to February 2024, the docu-series ends with the news that the PM in charge of the investigation into Yara’s murder, Letizia Ruggeri, has been entered in the register of suspects for obstruction of justice. The Yara Case: Beyond a Reasonable Doubt has the merit of focusing on length, and honestly, on the media siege that Yara’s family experienced in the days following her disappearance. But also, on that suffered by Massimo Bossetti’s family, whose children were afraid to leave the house after his arrest.

There are the words of the protagonists, except Letizia Ruggeri – understandably, given the ongoing investigation – and except Yara’s family. They did not want to talk. And yet you will hear them. You will listen to all the messages that Maura, Yara’s mother, left on the answering machine for her missing daughter. And they will break your heart. You will witness the reconstruction of the mythomaniacs and braggarts, the false lead on Mohammed Fikri (in the opinion of the writer, proof of the good faith of those conducting the investigations), the inappropriate statement of Licia Colò during a program theoretically far from the news. You will hear, and see documents, about everything. Or almost. Because in this accurate reconstruction, something is missing.

Missing are the statements of Marita Comi – Bossetti’s wife who destroyed potential evidence at her husband’s request – regarding the inspection of the Chignolo field where Yara was found. Just as there is no testimony (at least not even to refute it), not exactly secondary, of a woman who claims to have seen Yara and Bossetti together in the period before the girl’s disappearance. Nothing so strange: it is legitimate an editorial cut that takes a position distant from the procedural reality, in a documentary. Putting only a part of the false leads and everything else. The Yara Case: Beyond a Reasonable Doubt does not go, because it presents a partial version of the immense evidentiary scenario of this difficult investigation. In the vastness of the material examined, it may have escaped. But its intent is clear: to instill doubt. Closing with a small clip dedicated to the victim only to not leave the story of Bossetti, repeatedly in tears, as the last, clear proof of the intent of this, albeit very well done, docu-series.

Neri’s study for this Netflix series was extremely rigorous, where he tried to give a dark story that is still full of holes and incredible events, a sense, an explanation, a linearity for a truly interesting final product. Composed of two timelines and two points of view, that of the victim’s family and that of the person convicted of the crime, Massimo Bossetti, this series offers the public an intense 360-degree story that leaves the floor to anyone who was involved in this story and allows any reasonable doubt related to the story to have its space to be able to express itself. Netflix’s docuseries on Yara Gambirasio will keep you glued to the screen and at the same time break your heart for the umpteenth time, leaving you astonished by a story full of incredible coincidences and a justice system that struggled enormously to bring an end to the case, a word that even today, despite having been pronounced, has not yet convinced everyone.

Between archive footage, reconstructions of more or less plausible hypotheses, never-before-explored leads and testimonies from those who experienced this story first-hand, including Massimo Bossetti himself, who revealed his version of the facts from inside the prison where he is serving a life sentence – while still declaring his innocence – this series is a hypnotic and poignant tale, as hypnotic and poignant as this story has been for Italy as a whole. You are horrified, you question everything, and you wonder how it is possible that you cannot find a certain explanation for such a cruel crime story and why the truth about how things happened that evening has not yet fully emerged. One thing, however, is certain, Yara is no longer here, her life stopped at those 13 years that saw her still a child with her mind only on her greatest passion, rhythmic gymnastics. And then there is Massimo Bossetti, the so-called “unknown number 1” who is in prison for DNA found on little Yara’s clothes and will remain behind bars for the rest of his life. Was it him? Wasn’t it him?

Through a compelling narrative, accurate reconstructions, and the precious testimonies of the protagonists of the story, The Yara Gambirasio Case: Beyond Reasonable Doubt tries to bring out the incredible complexity of the investigations, also shedding light on the potential flaws of the Italian judicial system and trying, albeit in a veiled way, to raise doubts regarding Bossetti’s actual guilt. The narrative pace is tight but not frenetic, allowing the viewer to assimilate the complex information without feeling overwhelmed. Accuracy in the details and testimonies make The Yara Gambirasio Case: Beyond Reasonable Doubt a product of notable quality that never descends into the morbid and does not have the presumption of providing a new truth but of proposing a broader and more complex vision of the story.
