The Wheel of Time: Perrin Aybara His Powers And Bond With Wolves Explained
The Wheel of Time is a complex universe, which intertwines the stories of different characters. Almost immediately, we are shown the particular bond between Perrin and the wolves that the boy encounters on his way. As it is easy to guess, there is so much to discover.
One of the bets of The Wheel of Time was to be able to talk, in a satisfactory way and on the small screen, of an extremely complex literary universe, of a story that tells the adventures of numerous characters between magic and darkness, among these there is that of Perrin Aybara (Marcus Rutherford).
Comparisons to the most popular series Game of Thrones or cinematic saga of The Lord of the Rings and de The Hobbit is almost impossible to avoid them which is why the Amazon Prime Video fantasy series – created by Rafe Judkins and inspired by the homonymous saga of Robert Jordan ‘s novels – doesn’t really agree with everyone. Despite this, the series was renewed for a second season and marked a record-breaking debut on the online streaming platform.
The Wheel of Time sees a world dominated by magic, the prerogative of only a few people: Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike) is an Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah and, with her Keeper al’Lan Mandragoran (Daniel Henney) is in search of the Dragon Reborn (The Dragon Reborn) reincarnation capable of saving or destroying the world. All this before this is found by the fearsome Dark One.
Episode after episode, we are shown various powers: the Aes Sedai are able, in fact, to channel the One Power that energy capable of turning the Wheel of Time. Equally fascinating, however, is the character of Perrin who possesses a powerful connection with wolves.
The Story Of Perrin Aybara
Perrin Aybara is one of the inhabitants of Emond’s Field a village in the region of the Two Rivers. According to Moiraine, the boy could be the Dragon Reborn he has been waiting for a long time. After the massacre we saw in episode 1×01 Leavetaking the boy is approached by a pack of wolves in the woods. Initially frightened, he soon realizes that they are not there to attack him – one of them even licks his leg – but rather to guide and protect him. In the novels, Perrin’s character is presented to us as a strong and sensitive boy of about twenty who works as an apprentice blacksmith.
The connection with wolves is explained in The Eye of the World , the first book in the cycle of The Wheel of Time. Before meeting the Calderai (Tuatha’an) in the book Perrin makes the acquaintance of Elyas Machera ex-Keeper who lives among the wolves as Brother of the Wolves (Wolfbrother) it is Elyas who reveals his true nature to Perrin.
The Skills Of A Brother Of The Wolves
The Wolf Brothers are very rare people, able to communicate with wolves and who acquire this ability during their life without being able to deny it. In The Wheel of Time novels, we are told that the Wolf Brothers can sense the presence of another Wolfbrother and that the latter can be recognized by his yellow eyes. Initially, Perrin’s eyes are shown to be a normal brown color and then turn a golden yellow.
Over time, a Wolf Brother’s body changes. As mentioned earlier, the brotherhood allows them to communicate telepathically and know the exact location of the other wolves and Wolf Brothers. In addition to this, the physical change also involves an increase in sensory abilities hearing, sight and smell grow considerably. Furthermore, the Brothers of the Wolves are able to access the World of Dreams – known as Tel’aran’rhiod – a parallel dimension that they can manipulate.
The fact that the wolves follow and defend Perrin, as also seen in the episode 1×05 Blood Calls Blood suggests that they know perfectly well who he really is (although, in the series, the boy has not yet understood). Not much is known, however, about the origins of the Wolf Brothers, other than that their abilities are older than the One Power.
Wolves in The Wheel of Time
The wolves known in The Wheel of Time novels have their own culture, names, purposes and ideas and it is likely that we will see all of this in the Amazon Prime Video series as well. In addition to communicating telepathically with each other, unlike human beings who reincarnate without knowing the details of what they were, wolves remember perfectly the lives they lived: each wolf, in fact, at its death, is reborn and keeps all its memories.
As mentioned earlier, wolves have better eyesight – they see in the dark, for example – a more sensitive sense of smell and it seems they can have premonitory dreams. The wolves in Perrin’s vicinity are, of course, linked to his mind, letting him know how many there are and where they are exactly. It is clear that the future of The Wheel of Time will most likely see wolves as Perrin’s precious allies in the fight against the Dark One.
