The Watcher Season 2: Ryan Murphy’s Series on The Observer Has Been Renewed By Netflix
Less than a month after its debut on the service, Netflix has confirmed that The Watcher, created by Ryan Murphy, will have a second season. Premiere in mid-October and at a time when audiences were ready for spooky content, the series has become one of the most talked about new series of the Halloween season. With the events narrated in the first season looking even more disturbing, knowing he was drawing inspiration from real-world events. In a surprise move, The Watcher Season 2 has just been renewed for a second season by Netflix. Ryan Murphy’s series captured the attention of viewers with a story drawn from real events and the interpretations of Bobby Cannavale and Naomi Watts as a couple haunted by a stalker. The renewal of The Watcher was also accompanied by that of Monster – the story of Jeffrey Dahmer.

The Watcher is based on a true story, set in Westfield, New Jersey. In 2004 a family bought an exclusive and highly coveted house and began receiving strange and disturbing letters from a stranger who signed himself as “L’Osservatore”. No one was ever able to identify the man or woman who had sent those letters and the family was forced to sell the house quickly. Monster too – the story of Jeffrey Dahmer obviously is taken from real events, and how The Watcher intrigued the viewers, who for days talked on social networks to find out more and to comment on the two series. For Netflix it is the golden autumn of news stories: there is a reason why the public like true crime and series about serial killers and the streaming platform from this point of view gives its audience what they want.
As we said in our explanation of The Watcher Season 1 ending, many viewers were blown away (and even a little disappointed) by the conclusion of this first season of the series, which however was consistent with the facts narrated. One wonders if the next season of The Watcher will give us a solution or other mysteries.
The Watcher: The Story Plot
The Watcher is a series inspired by an absurd true story first told in 2018 by journalist Reeves Wiedeman on The New Yorker; in November of that year, the traumatic experience of the Broaddus family, who moved to their new home at 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey, is detailed. Sometime after the move, Maria and Derek Broaddus begin to receive not only disturbing threats and attitudes from neighbors but also intimidating letters from an anonymous “observer”, who seems to know everything about them, from their shifts to their activities within the home, even their habits. The Watcher works great when it turns into an unprecedented example of a home invasion that has much more in common with Murphy’s American Horror Story than with his other recent projects.
But all that glitters is not gold, and the first signs of something wrong are evident from the first days of their move: the neighbors seem to have targeted them, annoyed by their presence (one of them even repeatedly sneaks into their home without permission), but mostly strange letters begin to arrive. Someone who calls himself The Watcher, the observer, explains to him how his job is to keep an eye on the house and its inhabitants, and how he takes pleasure in observing them, implying that his intentions towards them are decidedly sinister. The police don’t seem to be able to help them, and stranger things start happening in the house. Has the dream life that the Brannocks thought they built for themselves already turned into a nightmare?
