The Umbrella Academy: What is The Umbrella Effect? Here What We Know?

What is The Umbrella Effect? At the end of season 3 of The Umbrella Academy, the Hargreeves siblings lose their powers and decide to follow their own separate paths to build their lives now that they are normal, but it is not long before their “normality” is interrupted by a new crisis that forces them to be a team again. The final season of The Umbrella Academy is explosive, dramatic, and a little bit crazy. This season introduces several new characters, and among them is the duo of Jean and Gene Thibodeau, a pair of “doctors” who are convinced that they are in the wrong timeline, that they have proof to prove it, and that their mission is to do something about it.

The Thibodeaux, played by Nick Offerman (from The Last of Us) and Megan Mullally, are eccentric, dress alike, and have theories that some may think are crazy, but others may think they make perfect sense, and they end up forming a whole group of fanatics about their diets and theories, which they justify with a phenomenon they call The Umbrella Effect, which they believe is a sufficient explanation to convince them that they must act soon.

The Umbrella Academy: What is The Umbrella Effect?

The Umbrella Effect refers to having dreams or Déjà vu of other timelines they may belong to, or rather the original timeline the Thibodeaus believe they come from. Doctors Thibodeau spend much of their days searching for evidence that there are two or more different timelines or that something changed and caused the original timeline to be affected, and they find this in a series of objects that show different versions of history (and that come from the original timeline), such as a cover of the same movie, but with different protagonists, or a button advertising a presidential candidate and many images, toys and news clippings that talk about The Umbrella Academy.

With this, the Thibodeaus become founders of a group called The Keepers, made up of people who believe they live in the wrong reality, or an alternate one, and are convinced that they can return to their correct line. The Umbrella Effect, also known as Timeline Sickness, as people experience memories (thinking they are dreams or constructs of their imagination) from other timelines, and Jean and Gene have to convince them that it is all real and that there is a solution. They also believe that Reginald Hargreeves is the one who is covering up the truth to prevent the world from finding out that he did something to cause the problems in the timeline in the first place.

This is similar to what happens with the Marvel series Loki and the TVA, where there is the possibility of having different alternate realities and different versions of the same characters and their stories, but handled in a very different way. We also saw this when, after seeing that his children are not what he expected, Reginald decides to change history and create the Sparrow Academy, which is where an alternate version of Ben appears, who does not die in that “tragic accident” when he was 17 years old. The Umbrella Effect plays a key role in this final season, and connects to Ben’s death years ago, the mysterious Jennifer Incident , and the final mission to save the world that the Hargreeves Brothers must undertake to close this story.
