The Umbrella Academy Season 3: Ending Explained! Who is Abigail Hargreeves?
The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Ending Explained: Stay away from the Kugelblitz! That is, stay away from this article if you haven’t finished watching The Umbrella Academy 3: it contains spoilers! If, on the other hand, you’re wondering “How did The Umbrella Academy 3 turn out?”, “What the hell happens in the end?”, Well then you’ve come to the right place.
Like the first two previous seasons, this season of The Umbrella Academy featured time travel but also leaps from one reality to another. What triggers the new apocalypse is the grandfather paradox. This paradox poses the question “What would happen to the grandson if the grandfather died before he could give birth to the mother or father of that same grandson?” Being a paradox there is no answer but there is a reaction from the universe. This generates the famous Kugelblitz, a kind of fireball with the power of a black hole. With proper distances, it looks a bit like the one seen in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2.
So let’s recap the steps that led to the grandfather paradox in The Umbrella Academy 3:
- In season 2 Vanya passes the powers to little Arlan
- In the period from season 2 to season 3 Arlan’s mother dies and Arlan’s reaction is to simultaneously kill the mothers of Umbrella Academy members he met on the day they were supposed to give birth.
- As their mothers died before they were born, those at Umbrella Academy represent a paradox. Therefore, precisely because they exist even if their mothers have never given birth to them, when the Umbrella boys return from 1963 to the present, the paradox represented by Kugelblitz is born.
The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Ending Explained: What is Reginald Hargreeves Real Plan?
The season finale of The Umbrella Academy 3 explains almost nothing, it is a bit suspended in the air but if you connect the wires you can understand what is the original plan of Reginald or the father of Umbrella and the Sparrow. First of all, it must be specified that the figure of Reginald Hargreeves is the same as in season 2. He was however born and exists in the new timeline, admits that he was disappointed by the Umbrella boys and that he chose to adopt those of Sparrow, keeping Ben in the team. Don’t get confused by the fact that Umbrella boys were never actually born because that happens in one timeline and not all of them.
The confirmation that Reginald is the same as the previous season comes from a scene in the ninth episode of the second season: after the assassination of Kennedy in 1963, Reginald shows himself as the alien that is seen in the season 3 finale.
Putting the facts in chronological order:
- In 1918Reginald Hargreeves found a dimensional portal somewhere in America and had The Obsidian hotel built around it.
- The portal is guarded by very strong almost unbeatable warriors, so Reginald first trains the Umbrella and then the Sparrow (depending on the timeline we look at) to defeat the warriors and use the portal
- The paradox and therefore the end of the world are only a pretext for Reginald to speed up his plans. We can think that initially, he planned to bring a whole team to the portal. However, all would still be dead, as the machinery works by draining the vital particles of the boys. That’s why Reginald only wanted 7 members in the team, 7 is the number of people use to activate the portal
We specify that Allison was a Hargreeves pawn. The latter promised to have her reunite with her daughter in her original timeline if he convinced all of her to accept the mission. As we know, Allison’s power is very convincing and so if it were needed, she could have used it to convince everyone to carry out her alien father’s will. Eventually, but we’ll get to that in a little while, Hargreeves keeps the deal with Allison.
Luther’s Mission to The Moon
In this third season of The Umbrella Academy, Luther’s mission to the Moon often returns, even with flashbacks. In the last episode, Luther tells his father that he did everything he asked of him, even though he didn’t know exactly what he was doing on the moon. But when he asks, Reginald says that Luther was guarding the most precious thing in the universe. Luther asks what it was and Reginald replies “soon you will all know”. From the flashback, it is revealed that Luther has kept the lifeless body of Abigail Hargreeves inside a cryogenic cell.
This means that the Obsidian portal can lead to a dimension where Abigail Hargreeves is alive. Right at the end of the season, we see Reginald and Abigail standing inside a skyscraper holding hands as they look out over the city.
Who is Abigail Hargreeves?
The identity of this woman is revealed in the last episode of the first season of The Umbrella Academy. An undated flashback shows Abigail on her deathbed as she gives her final farewell to Reginald aka “Reggie”. The latter calls her “love” so let’s assume that she is her husband and wife.
Reginald is on an alien planet where he releases the “magic dust” that manages to impregnate girls in 1989 (this can be understood by connecting the initial flashback of the last episode of the first season and the initial flashback of the last episode of the third season). Missiles are starting from this planet, probably this marks the end of the planet itself (but now we don’t know what happens to Reginald’s house). Hargreeves somehow moves to the United States of America where he obtains an entry visa and here begins the mission to find a way to reunite with her love of her Abigail.
What Happens In The Last Scene?
At the end of the season, Reginald is about to kill everyone but Allison (Lila, Diego, Klaus, Viktor, Ben, Sloane and Cinque) by using his car and draining their particles. Allison, however, fails to let herself die, recovers, and kills Reginald with a sharp weapon. This reveals that Reginald is the alien seen in season 2.
Allison pushes the red button to start the car anyway, otherwise, they’d all be dead. After that, the entire universe resets itself. Klaus, Lila, Diego, Ben, Viktor, and Luther suddenly arrive in a courtyard where the hotel was located. Everyone has healed: Cinque has his arm again and Diego his fingers. Luther and Klaus are alive and well, but neither has the powers. Sloane, however, is absent, it is not known that she ended up with her. Most likely she never existed in this new timeline. Well, there is because she was also part of Umbrella.
If you notice, Allison goes home to her daughter. She is the only Umbrella woman to still show battle wounds at the hotel. This is because the pact with Reginald provided that nothing would change for her and that she would end up in the timeline of 1963.
