The Rings of Power: What Does Sauron’s Symbol Mean? Here What We Know

Galadriel’s story in The Rings of Power begins when, after the elves arrive in Middle-earth to confront Morgoth she discovers that her brother was killed in battle and decides to continue the quest he started. Galadriel finds her first clue in the body of her brother, whose skin was marked with the symbol of the trident belonging to Sauron, which she understands as a trace of evil, which could reveal that the enemy they thought they had defeated was not defeated expired, and they need to continue the search.

Galadriel’s suspicions (who is the voice of reason in this story) are confirmed later when she and her small army of elves discover a kind of destroyed fortress, where they find a strange stone altar that was marked with the same symbol that she saw in her brother. Her classmates think it’s nothing, but she’s sure it’s a message and they must follow it. While this is going on, a human boy named Theo discovers a broken sword bearing the same mark, which, as in Galadriel’s case, leads him to have a strange vision when he touches it, where he can see the flaming symbol as some sort of flame omen that something is about to happen.

The Rings of Power: What Does Sauron’s Symbol Mean?

Some theories say that the symbol is a way to keep Sauron alive. We know that the infamous Dark Lord placed some of his magic and power in the ring found by Gollum, but since that ring does not yet exist here, it is possible that he created that symbol on different objects and places to avoid being destroyed, and so he can take his power from each of them when it’s time to return. The broken sword Theo finds is “awakened” and made whole when it comes into contact with the child’s blood (which could come from Númenor), meaning that Sauron could take a sacrifice to recover after the elven battle, or he might even have already done so by this point.

The second theory says that it is not a simple symbol, but confirms Galadriel’s theory that it is a message that was strategically placed in each place. According to Collider, the symbol could be a map to Mordor, so Sauron’s followers would know where to go to meet him. Mordor is in the south, which is territory that in The Rings of Power belongs to humans, but we know that some of them were on the side of Morgoth and Sauron, and the area is filling up with orcs advancing below the land and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

Mordor is the place where Sauron creates his ring, so the symbol could indicate to his followers that they should go there and prepare the ground for him to create it, while Celebrimbor creates the fortress in which the rings will eventually be created of power, including 3 secret rings that are given to the most powerful elves. On the other hand, the symbol could be what is “poisoning” the human lands (we’ve already seen sick cows and poisoned water wells), using dark magic to prepare the area for Sauron’s plans, and for the humans to leave the territory (which is something they already started doing after Bronwyn shows up with the head of an orc that attacked her in her house).
