The Regime: The New Series from the Creators of Succession That You Need
Kate Winslet returns to HBO with The Regime, after starring in successful miniseries for the network such as Mildred Pierce (based on the famous 1945 film with Bette Davis) and Mare of Easttown, which won 4 Emmy Awards, including one for her as best actress. The Regime is a black and political comedy, that was created by the same team that brought us the successful series Succession (which this year premiered its fourth and final season in which the fate of the Roy brothers and the new leader will be revealed. of the family company) and has a large cast of renowned actors who play characters that are part of the history of the emergence of a new political movement.
Previously, the series was titled The Palace (as it takes place inside a palace), but it was revealed that its name changed to The Regime (to refer to the political regime led by Winslet’s character) and that it is one of the big premieres that we are going to see in 2024, probably when the platform has finished changing its name to Max (which is the project between HBO and Discovery) around the world (something that will already be reflected in the United States in starting May 23). The series is a kind of satire, where we can see a woman who is at the head of a modern totalitarian regime in Europe, and all the people who work for her and must deal with her eccentricities and whims.
When you see the new trailer for ‘The Regime‘, the first thing you think of is how good an actress Kate Winslet is (winner of an Oscar and nominated for six others): it doesn’t matter if she’s a police officer, a housewife, a rich woman sinking in a passenger ship, a writer suffering from Alzheimer’s or, as in this case, an unscrupulous dictator. The second thing you think about is whether Vladimir Putin’s pseudo-dictatorial regime in Russia could have been the inspiration for what will undoubtedly be one of HBO Max’s strongest series for 2024. The series will arrive – after several delays in the scheduled date – next March 31.
The Regime Trailer
The first trailer has already been revealed and shows Winslet as a defiant woman who is facing a complex moment in her country and with a complicated mood, receiving a woman, who seems to be sent by a president who is not shown but is mentioned on several occasions, in her luxurious palace and that she is not prepared for what awaits her. Arrests, panic attacks, uprisings, and more situations complicate the existence of all those involved in this regime that seeks to create “a new Europe”. The second trailer shows us a Machiavellian and calculating Winslet (and as extravagant as Queen Anne in The Favorite), who is willing to go to brutal extremes to maintain power and get what she wants, in a way much bigger than the by Logan Roy in Succession.
The trailer for ‘The Regime‘ (the definitive title, the provisional one was going to be ‘The Palace’) presents Winslet as the chancellor of an authoritarian regime that seems to be crumbling. The series, created by ‘Succession’ screenwriter Will Tracy, chronicles a year inside the palace where the leader of a modern European dictatorship lives that is about to collapse. The cast is completed by Martha Plimpton (‘The Goonies’), Andrea Riseborough (‘Birdman’), Matthias Schoenaerts (‘The Danish Girl’), and Hugh Grant (‘Wonka’). In the trailer for ‘The Regime‘, we see that Winslet’s character is threatened by various political difficulties that arise in her country. One of the few people he trusts is an unremarkable soldier, Corporal Zuber (Schoenaerts), as he keeps many of his friends, enemies, and even her husband (Guillaume Gallienne) in line.
From what we see in this minute and a half, we see that the strong point of ‘The Regime‘ is its cast. Starting with Winslet, who already made the fantastic miniseries ‘Mare of Easttown’ and ‘Mildred Pierce’ for HBO Max, but with this new project, we could see her as a candidate for the 2024 Emmys. Oscar nominee Riseborough (‘To Leslie’) plays the palace manager, who acts as the chancellor’s right-hand woman. Emmy winner Plimpton (‘The Good Wife’) plays the US Secretary of State, who seeks to protect American interests in the fictional European country, while Hugh Grant plays the opposition leader, whose imprisonment inspires widespread public protests (inspired by the case of Alekséi Navalny?). The six-episode miniseries is directed by Stephen Frears and Jessica Hobbs, who have plenty of experience with palace intrigue having directed “The Queen” and episodes of “The Crown,” respectively.
When is The Regime Will Release on OTT?
According to HBO’s announcement, the series will arrive on the platform on March 3, 2024, and it is just one of the big premieres that we are going to see throughout the year.
