The Penguin: The New Trailer Reveals the Consequences of The Batman on Gotham City?

The new trailer for The Penguin, the TV series that will act as a spin-off to The Batman, has been released online. The film highlighted what is in continuity with Matt Reeves’ film, and what differs. With Colin Farrell back in the role of the famous comic book villain, the series will make its debut on Sky and streaming only on Now next September (in the United States it will instead arrive on the Max platform, owned by Warner Bros.). In addition to Farrell, the cast also includes Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, and Michael Zegen.

In the trailer we see the appearance of a female protagonist who will undermine Osward Cobblepot, she is Sofia Falcone, the daughter of the deceased boss. The atmosphere that hovers around the character recalls something that mixes The Sopranos and Gomorrah. At the center of the story is a power struggle, and Gotham City is observed from the point of view of organized crime. Even more than in the film The Batman, the attention is focused on the mafia figures of the city and the type of control exercised over the city. The show is set immediately after the conclusion of The Batman, and even the movie itself highlights scenes in which Gotham is still seen flooded.

The Penguin: Where and When it Will be Released?

Based on DC Comics characters, the highly anticipated eight-episode series follows the epic crime saga started by director Matt Reeves with the blockbuster The Batman (Warner Bros. Pictures, 2022). Farrell will return this time as the protagonist of Batman’s iconic nemesis, The Penguin. Each episode will be available weekly at the same time as the United States, and will then be available on demand and streaming. HBO’s head of content, Casey Bloys, had thus anticipated the arrival of the spin-off, commenting on it in enthusiastic terms.

Alongside Colin Farrell there is Cristin Milioti who plays Carmine Falcone’s daughter, Sofia; Michael Zegen plays Carmine’s son, Alberto; and Clancy Brown plays Salvatore Maroni, one of the most powerful criminals in the city. And again, there will be Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Carmen Ejogo, François Chau, and David H. Holmes who complete the cast. The television project The Penguin will be released in September on the MAX streaming platform.

According to Variety, the series will have a “Scarface” style plot, with mafia boss Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot as the absolute protagonist. Lauren LeFranc will write the project’s screenplay; Matt Reeves will be part of the production team for the feature film, along with Dylan Clark, through their 6th & Idaho and Dylan Clark Productions, in collaboration with Warner Bros Television. The series is the second spin-off project for the small screen linked to The Batman after the one focused on the stories linked to the Gotham police department, which sees Joe Barton as showrunner. The Penguin was officially announced earlier this year, and Farrell gave fans a preview. The actor recently spoke to ExtraTV, where he claims to have already read the script for the first episode, which begins just a week after the conclusion of The Batman, as Gotham deals with the flood that occurred during the third act of the film: “It opens with my feet splashing in the water in Falcone’s office,” explains Farrell.
