The Night Agent Season 4: Netflix Renews the Series and Moves it to Los Angeles?
The Night Agent Season 4 has been announced by the makers of the series. Netflix announced the renewal of Season 4 through a video filmed in Times Square, where tourists who picked up a red phone in the middle of the street completed a mission and received confirmation on a giant digital screen. The announcement came just two weeks after the premiere of season 3, on February 19, and within the deadline of the showrunner himself, Shawn Ryan, whom I had anticipated in January: “Next month, a month and a half.”

The decision carried uncertainty. Netflix executives had decided to wait for initial results before committing, something that had not happened with previous renewals: season 3 had been confirmed three and a half months before the premiere of the second. The reason was specific: season 3 was the first without Luciane Buchanan as a female protagonist alongside Gabriel Basso, and that represented a variable that the platform wanted to evaluate in real time.
The most obvious change in season 4 of The Night Agent will be geographical. After filming in Canada for the first season, in New York for the next two, and on locations such as Turkey, Mexico, Thailand, and the Dominican Republic for specific scenes, production will move to Los Angeles. Sony Pictures Television received a tax credit of 31.6 million dollars to facilitate that transfer. The benefit includes a six-month window to begin filming, which points to the end of May 2025 as the deadline.
The Night Agent and a Complicated Renovation
The first data of season 3 of The Night Agent generated caution within Netflix. In its opening week, from February 16 to 22, the series accumulated 8.4 million views, and it ranked second in the platform’s weekly ranking of English-language series. That number is considerably lower than the debut of the second season—13.9 million, in first position—and even further away from the original premiere of the series, which generated nearly 21 million views in its first weekend. An additional fact caught attention: none of the previous seasons re-entered the Top 10 that week, something that usually happens when the premiere of a new installment arouses retrospective interest in the franchise’s catalog.
The opening figure was comparable to that of The Waterfront, a series on Universal TV, which registered 8.3 million in its first week and was canceled without further ado. The comparison was inevitable. But in the second week, The Night Agent rose to 9.9 million, and seasons 1 and 2 returned to the Top 10 with 2.9 and 2.7 million, respectively. This growth significantly contributed to the decision to renew the show. There are structural differences that also weigh in the calculation.
The Night Agent was conceived from the beginning within the moderate-budget drama model, in line with the costs of one-hour productions of traditional American networks. Besides Sony Pictures Television, it maintains commercial ties with Netflix that go beyond a single series. The Waterfront, a more expensive production, lacked that type of affinity; it did not have the same factors in its favor, such as a strong partnership with a streaming service or a proven track record of audience engagement. Netflix also received indirect pressure: the California tax credit requires starting production before the six-month window expires, making the renewal a decision with practical consequences and not just creative ones, which could impact the show’s future and its financial viability.
The Night Agent Season 4: Location, Characters, and Structure?
Ryan advanced several elements of the new cycle during an interview in January. Season 4 of The Night Agent will be set in an environment typical of Los Angeles, linked to an industry or sector that has a presence in that city on a significantly larger scale than in New York. Ryan said it isn’t about entertainment, but he didn’t say what it is. The writers’ room has been running for months: Netflix quietly launched that process during 2025, and the team is already working on advanced scripts and plots.
Unlike seasons 2 and 3, in which Peter Sutherland was traveling to international destinations to continue the investigations, the fourth installment does not currently have any location outside the United States planned. This break with the dynamics of the last two seasons marks a turn toward a more geographically concentrated story.
Peter’s new partner will be a completely unprecedented character in the series. Some characters from season 3 will return, although Ryan did not specify which ones. And the new cycle will call into question the legitimacy of the program Night Action, the institutional structure that gives narrative support to the entire franchise. It’s the first time the series has looked back at its own foundations, suggesting that season 4 of The Night Agent could alter the rules of the game that have kept Peter Sutherland on his feet since the first episode, potentially leading to significant character development and shifts in the overarching plot.
