The Last of Us Episode 5 Ending Explained: How Did Sam Get Infected? Why Did Kathleen Want to Kill Henry?
SPOILER WARNING! Those of us who are familiar with video games are already aware of the prediction in The Last of Us Episode 5 No one can bind you to them. Like other HBO Max series, the post-apocalyptic world’s history can make you feel for some of the characters, but that doesn’t mean they will survive. We’ll go over everything that happened this week in this section. In the previous chapter, Joel and Ellie were attacked by a group of Hunters/Rebels led by Kathleen, forcing them to stay in Kansas City for longer than they had anticipated. They were accosted by Henry and Sam in the middle of the night in the final scene, making it unclear whether or not they posed a threat. The city’s Quarantine Zone (ZC)’s history is briefly discussed at first, except for a few conversations that hint at certain actions. However, a flashback has been utilized once more this week to explain what took place to the characters.
The Last of Us Episode 5: The Story Plot
The Last of Us Episode 5 starts moving us a few days back in time to show the revolutions in the streets of Kansas, cries of freedom and death to PHAEDRA. The corpse of a stabbed man is exhibited, and pressure is put on the collaborators (allies of FEDRA) to show their faces. Kathleen and Perry go to see inmates who are accused of selling their neighbors to PHAEDRA in exchange for alcohol, food, and comfort. She asks for their collaboration to find out the whereabouts of Henry. One of them says that he is with a certain Edelstein. Kathleen orders them to go door to door looking for him since she now knows that he and Sam are still in town. Also, they finish off the informers and burn the bodies.
Henry and Sam meet with Edelstein who turns out to be the doctor. They have food for approximately eleven days. Sam is deaf and very scared, so Henry tells him that he doesn’t have to worry, they’ll be fine there. They paint together on the wall. Ten days later the food supplies are almost gone, they only have one can left and Henry is aware that they have to go out for supplies. Sam asks if they’ve killed Edelstein, and Henry tells him that they probably have, but they still have to find food. He asks her to close her eyes and paints a mask on her with paint to instill self-confidence.
Just as they are about to leave, Joel and Ellie‘s car crashes, and what we saw in the previous episode happens, causing Henry to have to change his plans. And so we come to the moment where Henry points the gun at Ellie and Sam at Joel. Henry says that he is going to trust them but not try anything, they are armed. Joel asks who they are and explains that he and his brother Sam are being wanted, just like they are. They share their food with them and introduce themselves. In the morning Henry tells them that the survivors of Kansas have been killing for twenty years and that they have managed to drive Phaedra out for eleven days.
He’s a collaborator, which sounds awful to Joel since he doesn’t want to deal with snitches. However, he will not have any other choice. Henry knows a way out but needs Joel to clear it. He explains that Kathleen is in charge and makes them a rudimentary plan: the idea is to leave through the maintenance tunnels until they cross a bridge that will take them to freedom. The problem is that FEDRA buried all the infected underground, so the underground route is very risky. Henry has information that one of the tunnels was purged three years ago, and it’s his best asset.
Thus, they head into the tunnel with weapons drawn and ready to defend themselves. Joel asks them to light up, stay quiet, and prepare to run if necessary. They come to an area decorated with children’s drawings where Sam feels in his element, but Joel urges caution. The Place Is Abandoned: Joel says he’s heard about those places where people used to hide. They don’t know what happened to them, they probably got infected. Ellie and Sam find comics they both like. Ellie repeats the motto: “to the ends of the Universe and back, resist and survive”. The boys find there everything they need to have a good time: a ball, reading books, and toys. Ellie asks them to spend the night there to come out on the other side warm at night. There the boys play and relax.
Joel and Henry take the opportunity to catch up: he tells him that if he was helping to take care of his brother, he understands even if he doesn’t share it. Henry comes clean and tells him that he has killed a man: it was when he found out that the boy had leukemia and learned that Phaedra had the medicine, so he handed them over to the resistance leader in Kansas, who was Kathleen’s brother. . He tells her that he thinks he understands him because even though he’s not Ellie’s father, he was someone’s and it shows. Thus, he puts the personal conflict between Kathleen and Henry on the table.
Kathleen is in her childhood room, where she lived with her brother Michael. Perry goes looking for her and she explains that he used to protect her by telling him that her room was impregnable while they were together. She believes that he was a very nice person but that she is not and that she would be horrified by what she is doing. Perry tells her that they are on her side, that her brother was not able to change things and she was, and that therefore they will continue on her side. Joel, Ellie, Herny and Sam come out of the tunnel on the other side. Ellie tells them that they are going to Wyoming. When they think they are safe, they shoot at them. Joel decides to surround the house and attack from behind, taking advantage of the darkness.
The guy who is stalking them is a very old man. He asks her to put the gun down but doesn’t listen to reason and Joel shoots him. A radio alerts the man that they’re almost there, let him hold on so Joel has just enough time to lean out the window and tell the others to run. Events precipitate Joel’s fires from inside the house at the motorcade of vehicles in which Kathleen and Perry are. Joel manages to finish off the driver of the first vehicle and a huge explosion occurs when he crashes into a house. Kathleen asks Herny to turn himself in, but he tells her to let the kids off something which she refuses. She knows the reason why she betrayed her brother, and she doesn’t care: she considers that perhaps Sam should die as so many children have done and that he is not special. Henry asks Ellie to grab Sam and run when he turns himself in.
As Kathleen loads the gun, they see a hole open in the ground and the burning vehicle falls through, followed by a tangle of infected speeding out. Kathleen’s men open fire and Joel from his position too, but all is chaos. Ellie gets into a car where an Infected is then introduced. Perry sees a gigantic clicker come out of the gap and tells Kathleen to take cover and not stop running just before the clicker pounces on her and rips her head off. Ellie manages to escape from the vehicle and helps Henry and Sam. They try to run away, but Kathleen finds them. She is jumped by an Infected at the last second and they run for the embankment as the Infected continues to emerge from the ground. Already undercover, Joel meets with them and they decide to continue together until Wyoming.
Sam asks Ellie if she’s never afraid but she tells him that she’s afraid all the time, especially of ending up alone. Sam asks if you’re still inside your body if you turn into a monster and shows him a bite mark on her leg. She shows him her scars and tells him that her blood is medicine. He cuts her hand and applies it to the wound. Sam asks her to stay up with him and she promises that she will. They hugged. The next morning, Sam transforms and attacks her. After a few moments of confusion, Henry shoots him, and in despair to see what he has made of her, he then shoots himself in the head. Joel and Ellie bury them and she leaves a note saying “I’m sorry” before leaving.
The Last of Us Episode 5 Ending Explained: How Did Sam Get Infected?
At first, Henry and Sam became fugitives from the Kansas City Hunters, led by Kathleen (Melanie Lynskey). They cross paths with Joel and Ellie at one point, as the latter pair is also on the run from the faction after Joel shoots one of Kathleen’s men. Despite the awkwardness at first, the four decide to ally to leave the place as soon as possible. However, it will not be an easy task, since Henry is being sought at all costs by the leader of the faction since he was responsible for the death of her brother. In this way, the quartet is confronted by Kathleen’s forces, who manage to capture Henry and decide to kill him. However, before executing her target, a wave of infection ends up devastating her men and attacking her. Joel, Ellie, Henry, and Sam manage to escape however they can.
While Joel and Ellie took shelter somewhere, Henry and Sam tried to hide under a vehicle as a way to lose the infected. However, what seemed to be all right turned out to be a big nightmare for the duo. Somehow Sam had been bitten or scratched. The news of Sam’s infection, however, is told, at night, by the boy to Ellie. The girl even tries to save her friend by rubbing her blood, but to no avail. The next day, Sam transforms into a Runner and attacks the trio, but is killed by his brother, who shoots himself in the head shortly thereafter.
Why Did Kathleen Want to Kill Henry?
At first, Henry was a collaborator and worked for FEDRA, which used oppressive regimes to maintain order in the country, as well as in Kansas City. In the episode, we visualize how Henry is an overprotective brother and that he would do anything to save Sam, his brother. This becomes true when the boy tells Kathleen why he “eliminated” Michael, her brother. Michael became an important figure for the Hunters as they reacted to the oppressions suffered by FEDRA. He was one of the leaders of the people to resist the regime, giving rise to a faction that would run the place and provide security. However, everything went wrong when someone betrayed the organization and took Michael, the leader, to FEDRA. Later, Kathleen discovered that Henry was responsible and vowed to use all her might to find him, forcing her men to conduct a sweep of the entire city.
On the other hand, in a last meeting between the two, Henry confirmed that he turned in and betrayed Michael for being used by FEDRA. His brother suffered from a serious illness and only FEDRA had the cure, so they used Henry as a way to get to Michael A switch. The revenge sworn to Henry does not materialize at the hands of Kathleen, since she is killed by an infected child before executing her target. Henry, on the other hand, takes his own life after killing his already-infected brother.
Who Was Ish in the Games?
In the game, Ish is just a mentioned, never seen character. At first, players get information about his whereabouts, as well as his past, through some notes scattered throughout the game when we take control of Joel, for example. Although he has never been seen, the character is described as a thin but very agile man. It is said that he was at sea during the infection and landed in the Pittsburgh sewers, there he found some survivors and helped them with supplies, forming a community and support network. In addition, the boy is said to have had riot gear. However, the origin of the equipment was never discovered, but that it was possibly stolen from a policeman.
Will Ish Appear in HBO Max’s The Last of Us Series?
At first, the appearance of the character in the series has not yet been confirmed. While it is common for characters mentioned in a given episode to appear in the next, there is still nothing confirmed regarding Ish. On the other hand, the creators of the original HBO Max series decided to add and address some of the game’s subplots in greater depth, so a possible appearance of Ish may be possible very soon. Although faithful, the series has been showing a lot of creative freedom, which has also been pleasing to the public.
Is Sam Mute in The Last of Us game?
Unlike what we saw in the fifth episode of the series shown last Friday, February 10, Sam is not mute in the game. Although quieter, the boy is an ordinary boy and very pessimistic, including several complaints to his older brother Henry. On the other hand, the character, although not one of the most talkative in the entire plot, shares several important dialogues. When he meets Ellie, the boy becomes more open and starts sharing jokes, conversations, and stories with the girl. Sam’s last conversation in the game was with Ellie. The boy talks to the girl about the possibilities of an individual being helplessly trapped inside their own body and unable to control themselves once transformed. The scene, however, becomes even more impactful when, later, Ellie would be the first to discover that Sam was infected and had transformed.
Why Was Sam Mute in The Series?
At first, the HBO Max series has been taking a lot of creative freedom in the last few episodes. As in the fifth, some other chapters of the plot were subject to subtle differences, – and very noticeable, from the material received from the game. As for Sam’s muteness, the show’s writer and executive producer, Neil Druckman, explained that the choice led to some interesting storytelling decisions and made Sam and Henry’s story even more impactful than it was in the games. It is worth remembering, however, that Sam is only 8 years old in the series, unlike the game where he was 13 years old.
Why Did Ellie Rub Her Blood on Sam’s Leg?
At first, the fifth episode of the series gets chaotic at a certain point where Joel, Ellie, Henry, and Sam are focused on a battle between Kathleen’s (Melanie Lynskey) soldiers and the infected. The carnage lasts for a few moments and apparently, the foursome was fine. Right after the brutal episode, the four go to a hotel to rest and think about their next steps. In the bedroom, Sam and Ellie are reading comics. And, before going to sleep, Sam decides to reveal that he was attacked by an infected, who ended up biting him on the leg. Ellie is the first person to know about the bite, as Sam has not even told his brother. Thus, believing in her mission to be the universal cure, Ellie decides to use her blood, since she is immune to the infection, to try to save her friend. Ellie rubs her blood on Sam’s wound in hopes the boy doesn’t get infected. Things, however, do not go as expected, as Sam wakes up the next day already infected and attacking his friends.
