The new live-action series The Last of Us, based on the video game of the same name developed by Naughty Dog, is ever closer to its release, with the official Italian trailer released in these days. The show produced by HBO and distributed will be set twenty years after the start of the Cordyceps pandemic that transforms humans into zombie-like creatures. Obviously, as in the game, Joel will be the protagonist, played by Pedro Pascal and joined by Bella Ramsey in the role of Ellie. During the episodes, however, we will see many other characters, including friends, survivors and people looking for a cure for the pandemic.
The Last of Us: All The Characters
In this article we will therefore take care of making a list of all the characters from the video game whose presence in the series has been confirmed so far, explaining their role and thus helping you to take stock of the situation. You will then arrive on January 15, the official debut date, get ready to immerse yourself completely in the vision!
Joe Miller – Pedro Pascal
Joel, the absolute protagonist of The Last of Us, will be played in the series by Pedro Pascal (especially known for The Mandalorian and Game of Thrones): fifty-year-old who has lost hope for a cure for the infection, and who is skeptical about traveling with Ellie, later being persuaded by her brother. Having survived the initial phase of the zombie infection and the collapse of the US government, Joel has found a balance in life playing the smuggler and surviving with an “us or them” mentality. The situation in the United States is the following: civilians have gathered in areas subjected to quarantine strictly controlled by the FEDRA (Federal Disaster Response Agency), a faction that has taken command of the United States and controls its military; on the other hand, a black market has arisen to deflect the extreme rationalization of food and medicine.
Ellie – Bella Ramsey
Ellie will be played by Game of Thrones actress Bella Ramsey. In addition to being a very important character on a narrative level, she becomes usable in the last part of the game, while she is one of the protagonists of The Last of Us: Part II. In the first title (as well as the beginning of the series), Ellie is a headstrong and sarcastic fourteen-year-old girl, who is bitten by an infected after curfew. Although there is no cure for the infection, which is usually fatal, Ellie miraculously survives and is discovered to be immune to all forms of Cordyceps. This raises hopes about the character’s key role, which could be the key to finding a cure for the pandemic.
Sarah Miller – Nico Parker
While Sarah Miller is only onscreen for a few minutes in The Last of Us series, her existence is central to the game’s narrative. Joel’s 12-year-old daughter is killed during the opening sequence as they try to escape from the infected, though it is soldiers who shoot them in an attempt to stop the walkers. Her father survives the battle, but the girl’s death fuels her hatred of the organization, as well as his reluctance to help Elie. In the show, Sarah will be played by Niko Parker, best known for her role in Dumbo.
Marlene-Merle Dandridge
The confirmation of Merle Dandridge in the role of Marlene has generated quite a stir, given that the actress is the same one who voices the character in the game. The woman is the leader of the Fireflies, a resistance group that seeks to overthrow the military oppression caused by FEDRA’s control over the quarantined areas. Joel also hates FEDRA, but still keeps his distance from the Fireflies, considering them disillusioned and doomed to fail in their goal. Marlene had been asked to keep Ellie safe by her mother, so she asked Joel to take Ellie on a trip after she was injured in a shooting.
Tess – Anna Torv
Tess is Joel’s right-hand man in operations, and she’s at least as ruthless as he is. At the beginning of The Last of Us, the woman is following a lead to find another smuggler, Robert, who is late in paying for a shipment of weapons. When she discovers that he has sold their arsenal to the Fireflies and has no way to repay them, she kills him, setting out to find Marlene. Tess persuades Joel to accept the assignment of accompanying Ellie on the journey across the United States in exchange for a promise of compensation and convinces him to continue the mission even when the stakes rise to the discovery of a possible cure for the disease Infection. In the series, the character will be played by Anna Torv (Midhunter).
Tommy Miller – Gabriel Luna
Tommy Miller is Joel’s long-lost brother: the two were together the night Sarah was murdered and survived as a duo for many years. Eventually, Tommy tires of Joel’s ruthless behavior and decides to distance himself from him, joining the Fireflies in search of a better environment. At the beginning of The Last of Us, he has already left the Fireflies and is living in Jackson, Wyoming with his wife Maria. The role of Tommy was given to Gabriel Luna; Maria will also appear, but it is not yet known who the actress will be who will play her.
Robert – Brendan Fletcher
Brendan Fletcher was cast as Robert, a short-lived character in The Last of Us: he is a black market arms dealer who has had dealings with Joel and Tess. But when he turns against them, he feels firsthand how ruthless they can be.
Bill-Nick Offerman
Upon his arrival in The Last of Us, Billy has the entire city of Lincoln to himself and has engineered a structure of traps to keep both the infected and other survivors at a distance. The man has a business relationship with Tess and Joel since he provides them with what is necessary for the smuggling operations, but although he hates that his daily life is ruined by the duo, he still agrees to help them to return the favors passed. Con O’Neil had initially been cast as Bill in the series but was then replaced by Nick Offerman.
Frank – Murray Bartlett
Frank is a character who has bad luck in The Last of Us, and he will be played by Murray Bartlett. In the game, conversations between Joel and Billy, as well as notes that can be found in the course of the adventure, make it clear that the character had been in a romantic relationship with the latter, which however ended before the events of the work. Frank’s only appearance in the game is a corpse that can only be identified by the shirt he is wearing. Since an actor has been cast to play the character, he will likely be alive at the start of the series to provide flashbacks to his relationship with Billy.
Riley – Storm Reid
Riley Abel soon becomes the subject of Ellie’s romantic interest in the video game, and it looks like the same thing will happen in the TV series as well. The sixteen-year-old girl is a survivor from Boston, whose father was infected, forcing her to kill him to save herself; she then travels to a military school, which she abandons to live with the other survivors. Storm Reid, best known for her role in Euphoria, will play her character.
Henry and Sam – Lamar Johnson and Keivonn Woodard
Henry is a supporting character in The Last of Us, being one of the Hartford survivors. He and his brother Sam leave town after the military abandons the quarantined area, and are found by Joel and Ellie hiding from a group of hunters. The two reveal they are heading west to join the Fireflies, but unfortunately in the game, they die; we don’t know if they will have the same fate in the series, but they will be played by Lamar Johnson and Keivonn Woodard.
Other Characters Featured In The Last of Us Series
Although the live-action series of The Last of Us will most likely be faithful to the narrative of the video game, obviously the original world will be expanded, introducing new characters that were not present in the story. Indeed, among the announced actors we have Jeffery Piere, Bran Leland, Natasha Mumba and Melanie Lynskey, who will play unpublished roles in the saga.
