The Last Kingdom 5: Produced from 2015 to 2022 for 5 seasons, The Last Kingdom told us about the coexistence between Saxons and Vikings in the 9th century AD and the struggle between two different civilizations. Although inspired by real events, the historical drama is based on Bernard Cornwell ‘s The Saxon Stories. The Last Kingdom stars the legendary Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Alexander Dreymon) who – in an England divided into seven kingdoms – was born a Saxon but grew up as a Danish having been kidnapped by the Vikings. Uhtred’s character is inspired by the warrior Uhtred the Bold, of which Cornwell is a descendant.

Each season of The Last Kingdom represents the small-screen adaptation of two novels in Bernard Cornwell’s The Stories of the Saxons: the first season tells the story of The Last Kingdom and A Knight and His King (The Pale Horseman) , Season 2 The Lords of the North and Sword Song , Season 3 The Burning Land and Death of Kings , and the fourth season King without God (The Pagan Lord) and The Throne without a King (The Empty Throne) , while the fifth and final season of the series revised the books Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer.

The Last Kingdom Season 5 opens by telling what has happened in the last few years – years that have been of peace – setting the stage for what is about to happen. We find Brida (Emily Cox), in Iceland, preparing to leave for the war towards York because she is still seeking revenge against Uhtred; while the latter is located between Mercia and Northumbria , where he keeps the peace and raises Aeathelstan (Harry Gilby) , son of Edward and Ecgwynn (Julia Brown).

Deceived by his brother, in fact, Sigtryggr (Eysteinn Sigurðarson) , married to the daughter of Uhtred Stiorra (Ruby Hartley) , gives access to York to Brida and her army. She begins to kill innocent people – first she also castrates Uhtred’s son and after torturing Father Pyrlig – while Stiorra hides and Sigtryggr is sent to look for Uhtred: it is, in fact, an attack to tease the latter.

When Uhtred arrives in York he collides with Brida, but the battle ends in a stalemate following the accident that sees the death of Vibeke (Emili Ackchina), daughter of the latter. Fortunately, after the fight, Uhtred arrives in time to say goodbye to Aethelflaed who dies in his arms, telling him the truth.

Upon the death of the Queen of Mercia, Aelfwynn is called to inherit the throne, but Aethelhelm tries to do everything to favor his nephew: he has pilgrims killed to create friction between pagans and Christians, so as to make believe that the massacre has been carried out on the orders of Sigtryggr. Unfortunately, however, due to her decision, her daughter Aelflaed is killed by mistake and Edward decides to declare war on the Danes and kill, in revenge, Sigtryggr’s wife (that is, Uhtred’s daughter).

Shortly after, Uhtred discovers that Aethelhelm’s hand is behind the murders and death of Aelflaed and therefore tries to mediate for peace: Edward proposes that the Danes renounce their Gods and be baptized in Christianity, but Sigtryggr refuses. and is sentenced to death; Stiorra, on the other hand, is banished from York and becomes the leader of the Danes.

In Season 5 Episode 7, we finally arrive at the showdown between Brida and Uhtred: the two childhood friends and ex-lovers fight and the latter convinces the girl to redeem herself by facing her pain and anger, but Stiorra intervenes and kills Brida with an arrow behind her.

Meanwhile, Edward decides to marry his mistress, Eadgifu (Sonya Cassidy) , who is pregnant and discovers that Aelflaed was killed by Aethelhelm, while the latter is in Scotland in an attempt to induce King Constantin (Rod Hallett) to enter. at war with Edward proposing Aelfwynn as a bride as a gift: if, in fact, Edward was deposed, Aelfweard would rise to the throne and Aethelhelm would win.

The Last Kingdom 5 Ending? The Last Episode Of The Fifth Season

The final episode of The Last Kingdom, 5 Episode 10, starts where it all began: from Bebbanburg, with Uhtred ready to take back what was always rightfully his. Constantine is blatantly defeated, not before Uhtred manages to sneak into the castle to save Aelfwynn and get rid of his cousin Wihtgar (Ossian Perret).

While Aelfweard discovers that his grandfather Aethelhelm is responsible for his mother’s death and the latter – abandoned by his grandson – commits suicide, it seems that Constantin has the upper hand in the war: Edward’s forces are, in fact, surrounded and the army of the King of Wessex is pushed to the sea, where several warriors perish.

Fortunately, Stiorra intervenes at Uhtred’s request – in the hope of a Northumbria as a place where the Danes and Saxons can live in harmony – and the Scots are defeated, while Constantin orders his men to burn Bebbanburg. The incoming rain, however, changes the fate of Uhtred who, seeing his house on fire, had decided not to abandon Bebbanburg and to die there if necessary.

The Last Kingdom concludes, therefore, with Uhtred negotiating peace with King Constantin, recognizing Edward as King but keeping Northumbria as a kind of buffer zone between England and Scotland until there is a ruler able to truly unify the ‘England (this will be Aeathelstan, the first true King of the united country). Uhtred reminds Edward that his victory was due to the Danes who will be able, therefore, to continue living there in peace, while as Lord Uhtred of Northumbria the protagonist manages to regain possession of his inheritance.

Finally, flashbacks of the protagonist’s story flow, as Hild (Eva Birthistle) arrives at Bebbanburg Castle with Osbert – another son of Uhtred who is about to reunite with his father and two brothers – Aelfwynn reunites with Aelswith and Cynlaef (Ryan Quarmby) and Uhtred invites Eadith (Stefanie Martini) to stay in Bebbanburg, where her old friends also stop: Finan (Mark Rowley) and Sihtric (Arnas Fedaravicius).

What To Expect From The Last Kingdom’s Seven Kings Must Die movie? What We Know So Far

The finale of The Last Kingdom 5 certainly closes the circle regarding the story of Uhtred, but Seven Kings Must Die will conclude the story by narrating – albeit changing something – the last three books of The Stories of the Saxons: The War of the Wolf (War of the Wolf), Sword of Kings and War Lord (War Lord).

We left King Constantin of Scotland and King Edward of Wessex in a somewhat fragile situation, so it’s no surprise that a new conflict arises. The return of Osbert, of course, suggests that his presence could be central to the sequel to the historical drama. Netflix has not yet released any synopsis or the names of the cast, but we will surely find Alexander Dreymon in the role of Uhtred together with Mark Rowley (Finan), Arnas Fedaravicius (Sihtric) and the actors interpreting the children of the protagonist as Ruby Hartley (Stiorra).

It was felt that the theatrical version was the fairest way to adapt them. Season 5 is the end of the series and the film will be on its own.
