The Last House Netflix film follows a family that is trapped inside their own home, in the middle of an inexplicable, mysterious situation that leads them to realize that they could be in a very dangerous situation. During the quarantine we experienced during the COVID pandemic, we discovered that confinement could be tedious, frustrating, and very lonely. Not being able to get out of a 4-walled “box” was overwhelming for many, and this film takes that concept to the extreme, adding elements of science fiction that generate tension and fear.

“You won’t be able to see your home or family the same way anymore”, director Louis Leterrier told Netflix.
What this family owes to do is to try to survive in confinement, which seems to have no end, with the things they have inside their house, and, as the days go by, that becomes more and more complicated. And as they deal with that, they must also pay attention to the threat that seems to be growing outside, and that could be much worse than that lockdown. It is a survival thriller, but very different from most of the films we have seen in this genre (although there are some in which you have to survive a confinement that you don’t know when it will end), and with that extra science fiction that makes everything feel much more mysterious.
The film, formerly known as 11817, shows two adults and two children locked up suddenly in their home due to an external threat and forced to survive while supplies and resources decrease. The first trailer shows the characters of Greta Lee (Past Lives) and Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent) when they understand that the confinement will not be temporary. Lee asks in the images, “What the hell is going on?” when he discovers that the house has been completely sealed. Later, Moura states: “What if there is something out there that keeps us trapped?

The trailer begins by showing a family who suddenly realizes that it is impossible to leave their house. They can’t open the doors or windows, and they can’t break them to try to get out (as you can see in the trailer, after Moura’s character tries to break a window, it repairs itself).
Then comes fear, then anger, and, later, resignation. And just as they begin to get used to their new reality, something appears that changes the game completely and alters everything again.
The Last House Story Plot?
The film follows Jason, Ann and their children, Ruth and Graham, a normal family who one day wakes up to realize that they are trapped inside their own home, with a limited amount of food and resources to survive, and a space closed that feels more and more claustrophobic as the days go by (while outside the streets, buildings and even the park benches begin to be claimed by nature, which grows uncontrollably without human intervention).
The confinement goes from lasting days to weeks, months, and years, in which the family must find a way to move forward, while they look for answers about what is happening, what caused their confinement, and when they will be able to leave.
“Food is scarce, and this family has to support each other and try to understand what the future holds for them. What keeps them trapped and how will they survive?”, the director said.
But, when it seems that the confinement might be over, a mysterious woman appears, and something happens that makes them realize that leaving might not be the safest decision for them.
The Cast: Who Appears in The Last House?
The movie has, like protagonists, Wagner Moura, nominated for an Oscar for his role in The Secret Agent, and Greta Lee, protagonist of the movie Past Lives, in addition to Riley Chung and Noah Alexander Sosnowski, like the children of the family (Emma Ho and Gabriel Barbosa make an older version of the children).
Science Fiction and Domestic Horror?
The film is directed by Frenchman Louis Leterrier, responsible for titles such as Transporter, The Incredible Hulk, Fast X, and Now You See Me…, and part of a script by Matthew Robinson, credited in the recent Good Luck, Have a Good Time, and Don’t Die. In addition, Leterrier is also listed as a producer.
The visual proposal of the film points to a mix of science fiction and domestic suspense. Leterrier explained to Tudum that it was inspired by Amblin’s films, Steven Spielberg, and that he chose to use practical and artisanal effects whenever possible. That same testimony adds a technical detail: the first half of the film was shot in 35 mm, although the director did not clarify why that format stopped being used in the second half. Chernin Entertainment and 3 Arts Entertainment participate in the production. Leterrier produces together with Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Kori Adelson, and Oly Obst, while executive producers are Thomas Benski, Cecile Gaget, Lars Sylvest, Thorsten Schumacher, and Damian Anderson.
A Fashionable Couple: Greta Lee and Wagner Moura?
The launch coincides with a period of activity for its two protagonists. Greta Lee has recently participated in Toy Story 5, voicing the character of the Lilipad ‘tablet’, and let us remember that he achieved international recognition thanks to his role in Past Lives. In the case of Moura, after he participated in Narcos, this year he won the Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar for The Secret Agent. Now it has a pending release, The Last Day, next to Alice Vikander, and his next project will be the Panos Cosmatos vampire movie Flesh of the Goas, with Kristen Stewart and Elizabeth Olsen.
