The Gorge is a science fiction thriller directed by Scott Derrickson that plunges us into a claustrophobic mystery deep into a bottomless gorge. The story follows Levi and Drasa, two soldiers hired by the enigmatic Darklake Corporation to guard and maintain the perimeter of an abyss from which no one should leave … or enter. Their mission is to replenish weapons and ensure that concealment devices continue to function. However, when Levi accidentally falls into the abyss and Drasa goes after him, they both discover that the truth behind this place is much more terrifying than they imagined. The film begins with Levi and Drasa, two people who are on a mysterious and dangerous cliff. The cliff itself is a treacherous setting, filled with cliffs and dark caches, where strange and fierce creatures lurk in every corner.

Spoiler: This cliff is more treacherous than a cat trying to walk along the edge of a shelf. Levi and Drasa, initially strangers and then very much in love, must learn to trust each other to survive. A classic “I am a confident person” no one ever said on a cliff full of monsters. As they advance, they discover a secret entrance to an underground facility. Because, of course, who wouldn’t want to explore a dark secret laboratory in a place full of monsters? Inside the facility, Levi and Drasa discover that they are in a secret laboratory where experiments with genetically modified creatures are carried out. These experiments are funded by a clandestine organization that seeks to use these creatures as biological weapons.

The Gorge Ending Explained: Do Levi and Drasa Survive?

The Gorge, Levi, and Drasa find the remains of an abandoned city, riddled with grotesque creatures known as the Hollow Men. As they investigate, they discover a secret laboratory with documents and recordings that reveal the origin of the horror: in 1946, scientists from various powers worked on the creation of biochemical weapons in an experimental community. An earthquake released toxins that mutated all the inhabitants, turning them into the aberrations that now haunt the abyss. Since then, Darklake has been monitoring the area and collecting samples for his military experiments. Knowing that their only option is to escape and expose the truth, Levi and Drasa manage to return to the surface after a desperate fight against the creatures.

However, his return does not go unnoticed by Darklake. Their leader, Bartholomew, orders them to eliminate each other to demonstrate their loyalty, but instead of obeying, they prepare a plan to destroy the camouflage system that keeps the abyss a secret. After activating explosives on the concealment devices, Levi and Drasa flee in opposite directions, while Darklake deploys killer drones to intercept them. At the last moment, they manage to detonate the facility and activate the Straydog Protocol, triggering a nuclear attack on the abyss, destroying all traces of the experiments, and killing Bartholomew and his team. Drasa survives and takes refuge in Eze, France, where he waits for Levi for five days, fearing that he has failed to escape. Finally, he appears, wounded but alive, and the film closes with the couple reunited, although aware that their fight is not yet over.

Darklake’s Threat is Over?

Although the cursed city and its horrors have been destroyed, the film makes it clear that Darklake has collected data and samples for decades. The corporation could continue its experiments elsewhere, raising a possible sequel where Levi and Drasa definitively try to end the organization and its network of military corruption.

Will there be a Sequel or Prequel to The Gorge?

The Gorge universe has the potential to expand in multiple directions. A sequel could focus on Levi and Drasa chasing Darklake, revealing their experiments to the world, and facing a conspiracy on a global scale. On the other hand, a prequel could explore the events of 1946, showing how the scientific community of the abyss went from being a center of innovation to becoming a biological hell. We could also see Darklake’s first attempts to contain the threat and the missions of soldiers before Levi and Drasa, which would allow us to delve into the psychological terror of isolation and the fight against the unknown.
