The Flash: All The Easter Eggs From The Super Bowl Trailer! Here We Explain Everyone
The first official trailer for The Flash has been released, which sees Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) engaged in the fight of his life. The film debut of the Scarlet Sprinter saw several directors and writers jump in and out of the project before finally being handed over to director Andy Muschietti and screenwriter Christina Hodson. It looks like the two are trying to make one of the most epic superhero films of all time: not only is The Flash inspired by the infamous Flashpoint storyline, but it will also serve as the starting point for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new vision of the DCU extension. Here’s a closer look at the trailer, which premiered at the Super Bowl, all of its reveals, and Easter Eggs.
The Flash: Inspiration From Flashpoint
The Flash has passed through the hands of numerous writers, and a considerable number of directors have attached themselves to the project and then abandoned it before it finally fell into the hands of Andy Muschietti. But, over the years, one constant in this sea of turmoil has been that the film would be loosely based on the comic event Flashpoint. In fact, at one point, that was even the working title.
In The Flashpoint story arc, Barry Allen travels back in time using the Speed Force to save the life of his mother, who was killed by the villain Reverse-Flash when Barry was a child. However, by saving his mother’s life, he rewrites history completely, and not for the better. In the new world, Barry awakens in Wonder Woman’s homeland Themyscira is going to war with Aquaman’s undersea nation Atlantis. Bruce Wayne was killed in an alley as a child instead of his parents, so Thomas Wayne he became a more brutal version of Batman and Martha Wayne became the Joker. While The Flash won’t be an exact adaptation of The Flashpoint comic arc, DC Studios CEO James Gunn said The Flash does indeed “reset everything,” providing a clean transition from the old DCEU to the shiny new DC Universe. So even if Barry were to return to his world, he might not look the same as he left it.
The Team-Up Between The Flash and Batman
Affleck’s Batman, aka Batfleck, warns Barry Allen of the dangers of time travel. Given the general chaos that dominates the trailer, it seems that Bruce Wayne’s warning is quite accurate, but that he was ignored by Barry, who desperately wants to go back to the past to avoid the death of his mother.
“If you were to go to the past, you have no idea what the consequences would be,” Bruce says. “Bruce, I could fix this,” Barry replies. “You might as well destroy everything,” Batfleck retorts menacingly. The trailer also shows a brief moment of Batfleck in action, and we see the superhero wearing a brand-new Batsuit. We infer that fans will be able to see his version of the Dark Knight longer in the film, instead of limiting Affleck’s appearance to earlier Bruce Wayne scenes. Previously, Affleck had talked about how happy he was to give better closure to the character with his scenes in The Flash, after the unpleasant experience he had while filming Justice League.
Gotham City
A series of shots from the trailer of The Flash suggests that some moments of the film will take place in Gotham City, the city where Barry Allen usually fights crime. We know this because at one point we see a small ambulance with Gotham City fire department written on it and we also see a building named after Batman’s mom, the Martha Wayne institute. There was also another concept leaked online of this sequence where it looks like The Flash will save a couple of kids from the exploding nursery outside the hospital.
Kara Zor-El (Supergirl)
Batman isn’t the only hero helping The Flash. When the duo is cornered by Zod’s forces, he is aided by a mysterious girl who possesses superhuman strength and flight. We’re talking about none other than Kara Zor-El (Sasha Calle), aka Supergirl. We see Kara wearing a red and blue uniform, which mirrors that of her cousin. She also breaks the sonic barrier in an homage to the Man of Steel, whom Barry attempts to photograph. “Our children will want to see it!“, she says to her double.
General Zod Is Back
Michael Shannon’s General Zod made his debut in the first DCEU film, Man of Steel; this trailer for The Flash is the second time he unexpectedly returns. In ” Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice “, Zod’s body was stolen by Lex Luthor, who mixed Zod’s DNA with his own to create Doomsday in the Genesis Chamber of a Kryptonian ship. It was not the most triumphant return for Zod, although at least his genetic son was able to take revenge by killing Superman.
In the new timeline created by Barry’s interference with history, Superman is not present to stop Zod’s invasion of the planet. Also returning to The Flash is Antje Traue as Faora, Zod’s trusted lieutenant, and it looks like we’ll see a war between Zod’s forces, and the superheroes left on Earth, instead of the war between Themyscira and Atlanta from the comics.
Michael Keaton’s Batman
The first voice we hear in the new trailer for The Flash is that of Michael Keaton‘s Batman. The beginning is very similar to that of the first The Flash teaser released in October of 2021, with Keaton saying, via a voiceover: “tell me something. You can go anywhere. Another timeline. Another universe. So why do you wanna stay and fight to save this?“.
As he says this, we see a cutscene of his cape on the floor. If this reminds you of the image of Batman’s broken and abandoned mask in The Dark Knight Rises, then you should be ready for the next shot, which shows Batman’s cape fluttering behind him as he rides what appears to be the motorcycle Batpod from Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” trilogy. The trailer mixes and juxtaposes the iconography of several Batmans, in keeping with Flashpoint’s multiversal drive.
Keaton’s voice then returns, asking The Flash if he’d like help fighting Zod in the helpless new ” world without metahumans ” he’s inadvertently created through his time travel. We see the old 1989/1992 Batmobile and bats flying out of the Batcave, as Danny Elfman’s theme music kicks in. When Keaton’s face finally appears on screen, he’s wearing a Batsuit that looks more like the one worn by Val Kilmer in ” Batman Forever .” Maybe this is his revenge for the sequel to “Batman Returns”, directed by Keaton, which never came to fruition. Keaton makes the most of the “Yes, I’m Batman” line before springing into action. He is the one who reveals the first look at Superman’s cousin Kara, floating in the sky toward the end of the trailer. But, of course, he’s not the only Batman featured in this trailer.
Batman Suits
Below you can see an image of Keaton’s many Batsuits, some of which have a unique design, especially the scuba suit-like Batsuit, which probably makes it easier for Bruce Wayne to fight off underwater threats in his crusade to protect Gotham City. Apparently, Keaton isn’t the only Batman who will see his character design revamped in The Flash: Ben Affleck is not only back as Bruce Wayne, but the latest trailer also sees him sporting a new Batsuit, with an extra touch of blue for this latest adventure. With the film introducing a new iteration of Barry Allen, a new Supergirl, and the return of Michael Shannon’s General Zodd, there’s a lot to take into account when it comes to the film that will launch the first chapter of the new DCU by James Gunn, “Gods and Monsters“.
The Alternate Version of Barry Allen
The trailer opens with Barry, costumed as The Flash, standing outside his childhood home. “Tell me something. You can go anywhere. In another universe. So why do you want to stay and fight for this?” someone asks him. Barry has a simple answer: “Because my mother lives here.” Barry also explains the mechanics of time travel and the Multiverse, saying that different worlds and times are attracted to each other “like magnets”. “Time has a pattern it can’t help but relive.
In Flashpoint, Barry attempts to travel back in time and save his mother from being brutally killed by his arch nemesis the Reverse-Flash. It looks like he’ll be attempting to do the same thing on The Flash, though that raises the reservations of many people, including Barry’s fellow superhero Batman/Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck). “If you were to go to the past, you have no idea what the consequences might be”, the Dark Knight tells Barry, and he is soon proven right.
Barry’s Ring
Finally, we get a look at Barry Allen‘s special ring where he keeps his superhero suit; there’s a strong possibility that it’s a gift from Batman, who appears to have taken on the role of mentor to the young superhero.
A Superman Cameo?
There are rumors of many cameos in The Flash film: we know that Gal Gadot, Henry Cavill, and Jason Momoa finished their parts in the film months ago but, due to the massive changes made to the film, we do not know who has “passed” the hall by Assembly. It is also true that, given that this is a reboot of the franchise, there is still hope. Superman may have already been glimpsed in the trailer: in a small scene, Supergirl is seen flying through the sky with what appears to be the body of a young man. This could just be Superman: In Flashpoint, when Barry travels back in time, he alters Superman’s history, crashing his ship instead in Kansas at an Army base where he is being observed and experimented on until he is not saved.
