Maa 2025 Movie Review: The Story of The ‘Shaitaan’ That Emerged From The Soil of Bengal
Maa 2025 Movie Review: When the child comes on fire, a mother becomes Chandi, there have been films like Sridevi’s ‘Mom’ to Raveena Tandon’s Maatr on the subject, while now Kajol is also in her new film ‘Maa’. Taking this form on the screen. The difference is that ‘Maa’ and ‘Maatr’ were Revenge, ‘Mom’ is a horror genre film in which a mother insists on a heel to save her baby girl from the clutches of a demon. Last year, Ajay Devgan’s horror film ‘Shaitaan’ came out. Now, Kajol’s horror film ‘Maa’ has been released. There are no connections between the stories of the films. Both of them were brought under the roof of the same universe. This connection does not work in the interest of the film. Why is this, will also come to that. But first, it starts with the story of the film.

Just as Vishesh Films, a company paired with film director Mahesh Bhatt and his brother filmmaker Mukesh Bhatt, got a new formula of horror from the film ‘Raaz’, similarly Ajay Devgan has been taught a new lesson by the film ‘Shaitan’. His fans have been eager from the beginning to see mainstream actors of Hindi cinema in horror films. It can be considered to have started with Mithun Chakraborty’s film ‘Terrible’, but the amazing work done by the film ‘Raj’ based on the mythological story of Savitri and Satyavan is yet to become another example in Hindi cinema. Vishal Furia’s ‘Chhorrii’ franchise has started. There, he has made the social atmosphere created in the villages against daughters the basis of his story. The DNA of the film ‘Maa’ is also the same; this time, there is also a monster like ‘Munjya’ in the story.
Maa 2025 Movie Review: The Story Plot
The story of the film begins 40 years from today. There is a village named Chandarpur. A daughter is born into a family. Everyone has panic about this. The monster is cursing that family. It has been a tradition that whatever daughter is born, her sacrifice will be claimed. This girl is also killed. Then the story reaches today. Kajol’s character, Ambika, is telling the story of Kali and the bloodbath to some children. One of those children is also his daughter, Shweta. Shweta continues to insist on her parents. He has to go to Chandarpur. He has to see the village where his father was born. But his parents always try to avoid this conversation. For some reason, Ambika and Shweta have to go to that village. As has happened in horror films, people make wrong decisions, and the monster looks at Shweta. Now, what Ambika will do to save her daughter is the story of the film.
Maa 2025 Movie Review and Analysis
‘Maa’ is directed by Vishal Furia. Marathi horror film ‘Lapachhapi’ was also made by him. Hindi remake of ‘Lapachhapi’, ‘Chhorrii’ was also directed by Vishal. Like his previous films, he avoided making ‘Maa’ a typical horror film. However, it is a different matter that at some points jump scares were used to scare the audience. You’ve seen this technique in dozens of horror movies, where a character suddenly appears. Makers have tried to make patriarchy a real horror of ‘mam’; ‘woman’ did something similar. Just difference between the two movies is that ‘Stree’ had clarity, Maa’s case doesn’t. The film’s first half takes a lot of time to set up its world. The early scene tells you the Raktabeej story. Then Interval is preceded by the story of the demon that afflicts Chandanpur’s village. Writing-wise, even though the makers didn’t try to fill in unnecessary things. But he kept roaming around what was shown again and again. You feel the same information reaching you through different channels. The first half of the film sets out with a scenario in which Ambika and Daitya are going to clash.
The interval comes. Now second half, you’re waiting to see how quickly Ambika gets closer to her objective. But movie vision gets a little messed up here. Makers put a plot twist to shock you. After the movie’s over, though, you realize nothing changes more than that twist. Even if he wasn’t in the story, the narrative wouldn’t have been affected. The character shown in that plot twist remains just a metaphor for patriarchy. While you already did that monster. This film tries to fill the flaws in writing through treatment. Like film’s climax sequence was strong. It’s drawing your attention. However, the way Ambika kills the demon was dealt with in a hurry. Space could’ve given that part. Apart from the climax, Kajol’s work here was also one of the plus points. Durga Puja has a part in the movie. Ambika is shown to have been blessed by Durga there. Now, in the next scene, she goes to the forest to find her daughter. Action and action cinema revolved around men for too long. So if there were a mail character here, he’d be shown in the rough and tough type zone. That now he’s willing to face any disaster. But Kajol’s character Ambika doesn’t.

Her face still bears signs of concern for her daughter. Her eyes were running in other directions, too. Overall are a vulnerable human being. Kajol has given the character the right amount of humanity; this is the highlight of his work in this film. There is also a post-credit scene after the ‘Maa’ is over. The makers wanted to tie the film to ‘Shaitaan’ through this scene. But it was as if just an attempt was made to capitalize on that name. What was said in ‘Maa’ has been said in many Hindi films before. In such a situation, the film had the scope to do something different. But she does not do this. She just wants to make the already drawn line longer. He was not interested in making a mark on his name separate from him.
The film’s writer, Saiwyn Quadras, has woven a good story based on the mythology of Raktabeej and Maa Kali’s war, growing from every drop of his blood. Through this, an attempt has been made to assure the existence of two elements arising from the blood of Raktabeej. Setting the story in a fictional village in Kolkata was also a good decision. Sexism has also been pointed out in the name of sacrificing daughters, but in terms of the script, Sivan has been defeated. The screenplay has remained flat. He misses shocking moments. Even the horror element cannot create the same fear. Director Vishal Furia has made films like “Chhorrii” and “Chhorrii 2” in this genre before. This film seems to be an extension of that. The jungle scenes of the film are reminiscent of the scenes in Chhori’s fields, but fail to create such fear. The climax of the film is also predictable.
Talking about acting, Kajol looks good in the protective mother avatar. The film is on his shoulders; his presence on screen looks strong, but Ronit Roy wins in terms of acting. Ronit has done an excellent job in the impersonator role of Jaydev. His dialogue delivery, body language are great. At the same time, Kerin proves to be the weak link in Shweta’s character. Their expressions seem similar and dull. Whereas, Vibha Rani, who became Ambika’s guide, and Dibyendu Bhattacharya, who became a servant, leave their influence in small roles. Cinematographer Pushkar Singh and production designer Sheetal Duggal have made a good effort to instill kingship and fear in the atmosphere. The background score could have been better. No one even remembers the songs. The partnership with Satan is also not very effective.

Vishal Furia directed the film as an elusive thriller film, ‘Maa’ succeeds in entertaining. This film of about two and a quarter hours is like dal cooked in a pot mounted on a stove. The flame has been kept low by Furia, and hence it takes some time to ripen. Kajol has been seen on the poster of the film; hence, this film is hers. Kajol has also carried the film on her lonely shoulder. His second innings is getting stronger film by film. The flag of women’s films Vidya Balan in Hindi cinema, Actresses like Taapsee Pannu and Kriti Sanon have been fluttering a lot. After a joint effort in ‘Teen Patti’, Kajol has now held this flag alone and has held it a lot. In the scenes with Indranil Sengupta, the chemistry both of them, like husband and wife, may not be visible, but Kajol has created amazing magic with Kherin. A mother can do anything to save her daughter, and what a challenge wearing black power can become for such a mother.
Maa 2025 Movie Review: The Last Words
The hard work of Kajol and Vishal Furia has done the film ‘Maa’ as much as its writing team does not see here. The reference and firm reference to black and bloodbase could be established here, and for this, the film did not need to be set in the backdrop of Bengal. Khamkhan artists are forcibly caught speaking Bengali. The film’s DOP, Pushkar Singh, and Editor Sandeep Francis are seen trying to cover this major deficiency till the end of their efficiency. The biggest lesson of the film is for its producer, Ajay Devgan, and that they should have some young graphics artists for their graphics company, NYVFXwala, who can create world-class visual effects. If possible, the youth working in the South’s film ‘Hanuman’ can also be searched for. RP Yadav has created some unique action scenes in the film, and he also gets applause for them. The film has done the work of Suhaga, the song written by Pranav Vats, on which Harsh Upadhyay has helped the film by composing music according to today’s era.
