The Batman 2: Will Joker Be The Villain? Here Is The Director’s Answer and Explanation

The Batman, the Matt Reeves movie, has been in theaters for a couple of days. And after the vision, many are wondering: “Will there be a sequel?”, “Which villain will face Robert Pattinson’s Batman?”, “Will it be the Joker?”. The director himself thought of giving an answer when speaking with IGN. Speaking with IGN, Reeves had his say about the character played by Barry Keoghan and answered questions about whether this new version of Joker would be a central villain in the sequel.

The Batman 2: Will Joker Be The Villain?

Reeves explained that the scene in which Paul Dano and Barry Keoghan (Riddler and Joker) interact in Arkham Asylum was not supposed to be a “teaser” designed to launch us directly into the sequel, but it is not a mere easter egg either. The director admitted that he is still unsure of the Joker’s presence in the sequel, but said one very interesting thing about the character:

The scene isn’t meant to be there and make people say, like, “Oh, there’s an easter egg, the next movie is X”. Honestly, I don’t know if the Joker will be in the next movie, but I can say that what you see is a version of the character’s early days and, as always, problems are brewing in Gotham”.

The Deleted Scene From The Batman

Reeves later said that Keoghan actually shot two scenes as this Joker, but the director then decided to delete the scene. In the interview, Reeves detailed what that deleted scene was all about and how he worked out the inspiration behind his he Joker look:

The interesting thing is that the reason Joker is in the movie is that there was actually another scene from before. And since the film is not an origin story for Batman, but are his early days, it is truly an origin story for the Rogue Gallery [Batman Villains] characters. And for me, I think it’s this idea that the Joker isn’t the Joker yet, but they already have this relationship.

He then added:

The scene that isn’t in the movie, which is actually a really cool scene that will be shown at some point, is a scene where Batman is really very nervous because the Riddler is writing to him. So he says, “Well, why is this guy writing to me?” And he thinks he has to profile this killer ”. He then decides to meet another killer with whom he has clearly had an experience in these first two years. And this killer in this story isn’t the character we know yet, right? So everyone is at the beginning. So in the comics, these characters often emerge in response to the fact that there is a Batman out there. And here we have a Joker who isn’t the Joker yet.
