The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself: Ending Explained: Does Nathan Eat Soul’s Heart?
Fantasy is in the air and especially on Netflix The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself. Every year dozens of productions are released on the streaming service that seeks to capitalize on audiences hungry for enchanted forests, supernatural creatures and love trios. The Sandman, The Witcher, Fate: The Winx Saga, there is everything for all tastes. The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself in its original title wanted to enter through the front door between those titles and conquer older audiences. However, it seems to me that the script falls short of its purpose and the production ends with an anticlimactic closure, which conspires against its good intentions and precious bloody scenes. However, if you are one of those who is still excited about this 8-part series and you want to know if it will have a continuation and where it could point, the following lines are for you. As usual, we warn that spoilers are coming.
The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself: Summary Plot
Nathan (Jay Lycurgo) is sixteen, and he’s not a boy like any other. He is the illegitimate son of the most dangerous sorcerer in the world. This is known, and for fear that he may follow in his father’s footsteps, Nathan is constantly monitored, monitored with questions and tests month after month, since his birth, by the League of Fairborn. But when the lines between “good” and “evil” blur, the young man discovers what he is truly capable of with the help of the saucy Annalize and the charismatic Gabriel.
The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself Ending Explained: Does Nathan Eat Soul’s Heart?
But let’s agree that there are many stretched things to force the script. The most obvious is the excuse for the protagonist not to drink the blood he needs and reach the age of 17 strong, healthy and powerful. Even after our great friend Gabriel (Emilien Vekemans) got drenched from that broken test tube of red blood cells, one wonders: why doesn’t Nathan suck on his wet shirt? If we play crazy with the question, we get to the point with the end. In the denouement, it is quite clear that Nathan’s father is not the bad man that everyone paints. He is not a predator or anything like that. Once he got the protagonist’s mother pregnant, he ran away so they wouldn’t hurt the son and the woman. But lo and behold, the Fairborns, at least that cell that was performing that day, had no mercy and poisoned Nathan’s mother and staged the entire scene to look like a “Wolf” attack.
At this point, we have several survivors of the chaos that is presented in the last two episodes, and we can divide between the “good” and the “bad”. Our favourite polyamorous trio of Gabriel, Annalize (Nadia Parkes) and Nathan is in the first category, while in the second we see the duo formed by Soul (Paul Ready), and the revelation of the series, Jessica (Isobel Jesper Jones). This last one is the sister that nobody wants to have.
We quickly said goodbye to Jessica. He cannot deal with Annalize, who magnanimously spares her life and just leaves her to wander wounded and conveniently find a space-time window to land, also conveniently, in the witch Mercury’s house. We will return to this later because it is related to the second season. And finally, after an intense dialogue with his father, who gives him the blood he needs to grow healthy, strong, and powerful, Nathan goes for revenge. «That man killed your mother and your grandmother, so now he needs to be killed. He has power, but his mind is weak. He doesn’t know who he is. So, my last gift to you is this: the chance to see who you are.” This is the father’s last advice and then the young, healthy, strong annihilates Soul with a dagger, in a rare combat, with a horrific montage.
How Could The Second Part Begin?
The first thing you should know, and it’s not very good news for fans, is that the plot of “The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself” is based on all of Sally Green’s books. That is, there are ideas from the trilogy and the specific order is not being followed. For example, in Half Wild, which is the second literary instalment, Soul lives on. So it is not very clear what the sequel could be. In fact, during a chat with the Radio Times, showrunner Joe Barton explained that he originally wrote the script as a movie, but was later set as a series by Netflix. After agreeing on what they wanted, Barton said that he “went back and did a lot of rewriting”, incorporating some “big changes” from the original material. It’s a spiritual adaptation Joe explained.
“It’s the three main characters that are in the book and the world that Sally establishes, but in the book, Annalize is not very present. It’s more Nathan and Gabriel who go on this journey and then she shows up. Ultimately, we wanted to bring her in and keep her more involved, because I always liked the idea of these three kids and their interactions and the complexities of her relationships,” added Barton. This probably means that if there is a chance for a second part, the material will be a mix of new ideas and some excerpts from the books. We know that Jessica, for example, has no room for forgiveness and now Mercury offers her the option of taking revenge on the polyamorous trio. And it is not the only universe that can be explored.
During a conversation with Pink News, Emilien Vekemans (Gabriel), assured that there is a lot to review with Gabriel and Nathan’s relationship: “At the end of the first season, a true love story begins. We’ve seen Gabriel be a one-night-stand type of guy. But it might be interesting to see what Gabriel is like when he’s in love. What would he be like in a relationship, because it’s such a specific lifestyle? And I think that could be something interesting about my character to develop.”
Jay Lycurgo (Nathan) told The Radio Times that he also sees a sequel as possible: “My point with a season 2 is that we’re in a great place, in a world that we’ve only seen a small part of. There is so much more to explore.” And I add: That’s the good thing about fantasy. Also, because we also have the urban culture, the urban feel of cities, there are so many places that these characters could go and there are so many more characters that we could be.”
Co-star Nadia Parkes (Annalise) supported her partner’s idea: “Definitely. I love the world, I love all the characters and I don’t feel like all the stories have been told about these people. I’m excited about doing it again.” Then? Well, we will have to see how many hours viewed this production adds. If it gets enough attention, a second season will likely be announced. If you’re a fan, we’ll keep our fingers crossed for you.
