The 355 Ending Explained: What Was In The Hard Drive?
Despite the many twists and turns that enamel The 355, the threads of the plot continue to weave around a mysterious hard drive. The man behind the curtain trying to own the hard drive is a powerful man named Elijah Clarke. As The 355 loosely explains, the key contains a special decryption program that can access any system.
Little explanation is given of why the hard drive was created or how it provides access to and control of complex systems, such as the city’s electricity. The allure of the hard drive drives the biggest twist of The 355, which is Nick Fowler’s betrayal of Mace. They begin a romance before being separated in an intense pursuit of the hard drive. Although Mace has been told that Nick died during the chase, she is shocked to come face to face again.
Nick reveals to Mace that he has worked for Clarke from the start. It wasn’t until a little later that we learned that Marks was also in Clarke’s service and that Mace was duped by the two men. Nick and Marks used Mace’s skills and his rebellious side to their advantage to get the hard drive for Clarke. Mace is understandably upset by the betrayal, but she conflicts with her attachment to Nick, which puts the central character of The 355 on emotional stakes.
The end of The 355 reveals that Sheng and his father were part of an MSS plan to see who would show up to bid on the hard drive. The MSS was using this information in an attempt to bring down those involved in illegal activities. The hard drive placed in the artwork was a fake. Sheng had the hard drive all this time. This plan works for a short while, until Clarke learns that Nick has bet a huge amount of his money on a fake hard drive.
Nick quickly seeks to correct his mistake, locating Sheng’s safe space. Khadijah destroys the hard drive but the women are implicated in the crimes and are forced to flee. A few months later, Mace and the other women seek revenge on Nick.
Mace begins to share with Nick the story of Agent 355, an anonymous woman who served as a spy for the colonies during the American Revolution. After poisoning Nick and letting him get arrested for his crimes, the two separate but seem to have understood that they will likely work together again.
