SonyLIV’s latest original show, ‘Tabbar’ focuses on the Singh family, which includes Omkar Singh (Pawan Malhotra), his wife Sargun (Supriya Pathak) and sons Happy (Gagan Arora) and Tegi (Sahil Mehta). A chance run-in with the brother of an influential builder-turned-politician Ajit Sodhi (Ranveer Shorey) leads to a series of increasingly dangerous events for the Lions, culminating in a disastrous ending that requires either of them. Didn’t even bargain.

Tabbar Review: The Story

Tabbar is the story of a Punjabi family, where father Omkar is retired from a police job and son Gagan is preparing to move to another city to become a police officer. On his way home, Gagan’s bag is changed by Maheep Sodhi (Rachit Behl) at the railway station. Maheep’s bag contains yellow (drugs) and he comes to Gagan’s house to retrieve his bag, where in a misunderstanding and anger, Happy is shot and Maheep dies. Omkar hides the body along with his son to save the family and the whole family tries to suppress it. Since Maheep is the younger brother of the city’s top leader Ajit Sodhi (Ranveer Shorey), the case gets exposed and quickly becomes high profile. After this, the show sees a lot of turns and twists, where Ajit tries to find his brother’s killers while Omkar tries to save his family. Eventually Ajit comes to know how his brother died. You will have to watch the series to see what happens after that. A little love angle, friendship and politics are also shown in this family thriller. The last scene of this series will leave you stunned and tears will flow from your eyes.

Review and Analysis

Tubber itself is very special because after a long time such a story of a family has come to the fore on OTT. In this series you will get to see how far a person can go for his family. There are many small things in Tubber, which keep you connected to it. While there is good use of lightning in Tabbar , its background score also keeps you engaged with the story. Tubber is a web series of 8 episodes, each episode of which is about 35-40 minutes. Some scenes in Tubber are over-stretched, due to which you will feel at some places that it can be kept a little short, although you can still enjoy Tubber with family.

Tabbar is directed by Ajitpal Singh. If small things are ignored, overall Ajitpal Singh has directed well. On the other hand, if we talk about the actors, Pawan Raj Malhotra has done a very good act, the way he has played his character on screen, it is really commendable. At the same time, Supriya Pathak has also done a good acting. Talking about Gagan Arora, his character is quite different from the character he has played so far and Gagan has proved that he can prove to be a long race horse. On the other hand, Ranvir Shorey is a great actor and he has proved it again. Along with this, other stars including Sahil Mehta, Paramvir Singh Cheema, Nupur Nagpal and Kanwaljit Singh have also done justice to their character.

Tabbar had a good start. The first episode excellently builds on the direction the plot will take in subsequent episodes. The next two episodes are also well done, exuding a clear awe and a sense of foreboding to the narrative. The fear is so deep at this point in the plot that you can cut it with a knife. Each stage of the story fills the audience with dread at the next turn of events, as the Singh family’s anxiety increases every minute. Shakespeare’s symbolism, the repeated appearance of crows’ crows, Macbeth-esque blood-stained hands and the like add to the intrigue.

After this, the story takes a dive and starts going downhill. A sense of dread dissipates into thin air (for us, the audience), and the narrative begins to feel repetitive and monotonous. The plot is also full of flaws and improbable plot points, which rankles a bit. Ranvir Shorey is saddled with a role that is full of bark and no bite, which somewhat takes away from the initial pace of the plot. The story also drags and falls after the first few episodes. The flashbacks included in the story are redundant and drag the story further down. A sharp and crisp screenplay would have helped Tabbar rise several notches in the ratings given by us.

That said, Tabbar is a well made, well performed and well conceived show. The story is refreshingly different from the usual run of mill fares being offered by platforms in the name of OTT content. It is reminiscent of the terrifying Mohanlal crime thriller Drishyam, but only appropriate. The ending is devastating and beyond logic. If only Tabbar’s screenplay had addressed the flaws and flaws inherent in the story, it would have been an even more engaging watch.

Tabbar Review: Star Performances

‘Tabbar’ is Pawan Malhotra’s show in every way. No one, not even veteran actors like Ranvir Shorey and Supriya Pathak, are unable to take the audience’s attention away from them. He has few dialogues in the story, yet his performance and screen presence speak for him. The next star to grab the attention of the audience in Tabbar is Paramvir Singh Cheema. His Lucky is understated yet embellished with the right amount of histrionics where necessary. Gagan Arora and Sahil Mehta are good as Omkar Singh’s two sons. The characters of Supriya Pathak and Ranvir Shorey are a bit disappointing for the fans of the two stellar actors. The rest of the actors do their job well.

Tabbar Review: The Final Words

Well after wonderful other releases like Scam 1992, Maharani, Kathmandu Connection and Andekhi SonyLiv given us the wonderful gem Tabbar. From extraodenary performances to excellence narration Tabbar is now become my one of the best series of the year.
