Sweet Home Season 2 Ending Explained: Who Dies, What Happened to Hyun-su, and Who Returns?

Sweet Home Season 2  will be available on Netflix from 1 December 2023. This is an apocalyptic horror TV series that returns with its second season, three years after the first. The story is based on the webtoon of the same name (it is a manhwa that is published as an online comic) by Naver. The first season, released in December 2020, was a success and the second even exceeded expectations! Unlike many other zombie stories for the small screen, here the monsters are victims of a curse and not an infection. Therefore, the work of finding a cure is even more complicated.

The long-awaited second season of Sweet Home has finally arrived, leaving fans both excited and apprehensive about the continuation of the gripping K-Drama. The first season captivated audiences during the pandemic, successfully portraying the idea that ‘humans are the real monsters’. However, the anticipation surrounding the second season was met with mixed reviews, especially considering the divergence from the webtoon’s original plot. This article explores the season two finale of Sweet Home, providing a comprehensive summary and analysis.

Sweet Home Season 2 Ending Explained: The Story Plot

The second season picks up exactly where the first one ended, and our characters abandon the dilapidated apartment building in which they had until then barricaded themselves to begin a completely different journey, towards salvation or towards horrors greater than those faced up to that point. On the one hand, we have Sang-wook (Lee Jin-Wook) and Hyun-soo (Song Kang), headed – for different reasons – to the Bamseom military base, where the government is looking for a vaccine for the disease that transforms human beings into monsters, on the other the rest of the survivors who loaded onto a pick-up by the army, are taken to the nearest shelter. Things will soon take an unexpected turn for the group, forcing them to fight again to survive.

What happens to Bamseom will then be the watershed for the season, which is narratively divided into two parts: the first is dedicated to what happens immediately after the escape from the condominium (therefore focused on the period immediately after the outbreak of the “epidemic”), the second instead it takes us a year after the events, in which we find many of the protagonists in a shelter organized inside a stadium. The temporal change allows the series, as well as introducing new characters, to address different themes, recalibrating the needs of the protagonists who now find themselves living in a world that has been devastated for much longer.

On the other hand, Dr. Im refuses to reveal where the vaccines that prevent monstrualization are. In his tireless search for Eun-Hyeok, Eun-yu meets a mysterious girl, who shortly after makes him an attractive proposal. Meanwhile, the leaders decide to exterminate the humans before they turn into monsters and become a bigger problem, forcing Sergeant Kim and Senior Sergeant Tak to come up with a plan to protect their men. After the death of the survivors and the disappearance of a soldier, the state is enveloped in uncertainty, so the platoon embarks on a mission to find the soldier. In the last episode of the second season of Sweet Home, Dr. Im finds monster-like cocoons and is fascinated by them, Boss Ji forces Seung-wan to help her, and In-hwan discovers that Ye-seul cut the energy supply.

Hyun-soo seeks out Eun-yu and Chan-young to save Yi-kyung. During her reunion, Eun-yu tells the protagonist of the Korean Netflix series how some of the survivors died and they talk about Eun-hyeok. Later, Hyun-soo convinces Ah-yi to accompany her mother in her death. However, Yi-kyung doesn’t die because Ah-yi turns her into a monster. Hyun-soo fights with her to stop her and upon accessing her dreams he understands that he must kill her to free her from her suffering. Meanwhile, the young woman guides the soldiers to Yong-Seok, but he warns them that “they” will not let them leave. Who is he referring to?

When the young woman takes Young-hoo to the man who locked the other soldiers in the laboratory, it is revealed that he, the girl named Ja-Yeong, and everyone else were test subjects there and are now dedicated to isolating normal humans to allow them to be like them. At the end of the second season of “Sweet Home,” Eun-yoo discovers that Hyun-soo has blue eyes, meaning his monster personality has taken over. Meanwhile, Dr. Im follows a hooded man to the MH-1 testing room. It is Sang-Wook who shows Nam Sang-won, Yi-kyung’s husband, inside a capsule with liquid. Furthermore, from one of the monster cocoons in the laboratory, which are monsters that have not been completely transformed, Lee Eun-hyuk comes out, that is, just as he promised he would be back.

Hyun Su’s Fate Revealed?

One of the most significant cliffhangers of the first season was the fate of Hyun Su, taken by Ui Myeong. The second season begins with an intense encounter between the two characters, leading to an accident that leaves Ui Myeong seriously injured. Hyun Su’s attempt to help humanity results in his being shot but reveals his unique ability to connect with the memories of Monster Humans (MH). This revelation sets the stage for Hyun Su’s participation in a series of experiments conducted by Dr. Lim, who recognizes his extraordinary impact on monsters. Hyun Su’s encounter with a monster in the ring exposes the emotional depth behind the monster’s existence, leading to a conflict with Dr. Lim. The doctor’s intentions go beyond preparing a vaccine, suggesting a more sinister agenda. Meanwhile, Ui Myeong escapes, discovering the harrowing truth about Yi Kyung’s fiance being an MH. Their conflict sets the facility on fire, resulting in a confrontation in which Ui Myeong turns Hyun Su to stone.
