Reluctant to abandon his wife, Poppy and their young son, he secretly undertakes a procedure that will create a physically identical replica of himself, possessing his memories, but in good health. Watching Jack talk about the past as if it were his own, Cameron is filled with what can be described as envy. Dr. Scott altered Jack’s DNA strand that made Cameron sick. This means Jack will never have the fatal disease Cameron had. He has a whole life ahead of him, and he will spend it with Cameron’s wife and children, while Cameron dies in isolation, without his family knowing.

The contract Cameron signed allows him to opt out of the process at any time. He does it once but comes back later. While visiting his family to say goodbye, Cameron has a seizure outside his house. He’s brought back before Poppy notices anything. When he wakes up, Jack has already replaced him. Later he finds out Jack continued his work as an illustrator, and happy and loving messages between Jack and Poppy, about themselves and about Cory. Cameron realizes that life has gone on for his family, and that it will continue with Jack by their side.

At the end of Swan Song Jack enters the room and fully understands what Cameron is going through. How could it be otherwise? They are the same person. Something amazing happens then. Cameron ultimately chooses to let Jack be with his family, while Jack lets Cameron say goodbye. They exchange their clothes, and Cameron then spends time with Cory, drinking apple juice and eating edamame before going to see Poppy and hug her one last time. When he returns to the center, Cameron is homesick, heartbroken, but content. He is finally at peace, both with his destiny and with his decision.

What Disease Does Cameron Have?

They will love and take care of each other. Her children will grow up in a happy home, without the tragedy of her own death overshadowing their lives. While the future is unpredictable and no one knows what will happen tomorrow, Cameron has at least ensured the safety of his family for now.
