Superman & Lois: Tyler Hoechlin Explains Why The Series Has Little Connection To The Arrowverse

Superman & Lois is officially part of the Arrowverse on The CW. But actual connections between the series and the rest of DC Comics’ shared universe have been few since its debut. The protagonist Tyler Hoechlin made his debut as Clark Kent / Superman in Supergirl. However, the hero’s National City cousin was never mentioned. During her recent appearance, Lucy Lane (Jenna Dewan), who was featured in the first season of Supergirl, also turned out to be a completely different version of her character in the second season of Superman & Lois. The only direct connection the series had to the Arrowverse was an appearance by John Diggle (David Ramsey) in the first season. Tyler Hoechlin talked about the lack of connections between Superman & Lois and the rest of the Arrowverse: this poor iteration is mainly due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I would say there are so many different layers to this, especially for us last year with Covid,” said Tyler Hoechlin during the Vancouver FanExpo. “I know there were ideas of doing crossovers that were immediately discarded. I mean, even keeping our production running was so difficult that it was completely ruled out. For us, at least for me, the way I dealt with it from the start – again these are all conversations that go on between many people in Los Angeles and elsewhere – for us, we take care of what we go through day to day. day. For me, knowing what Bitsie and I had done in previous series and how we had our newborn baby before we entered this dimension of having two teenagers… I just had to make sense in my mind of how we got there and to. me it was a blank slate. Why else would I ask questions like ‘What happened to our baby?'”

Clark Kent’s Past In Superman & Lois According To Tyler Hoechlin

“So for me, just to clarify and make it easier for me to get into what we were doing, I just cut and started again,” the actor continued. “So whatever it is, it’s the same with TV. With cinema, you know where you start, you know where you end. With TV, it’s constantly changing so it could be one thing today and it could be something completely different tomorrow or next week or a year from now. To say something definitively, I know it’s always annoying that we don’t, but it wouldn’t do everything justice. Because we don’t know, we never have a final answer until the series is over and then we get the reboot. It never ends. So for us right now, at least in the way I’m approaching, for me the only memory I have like this Clark is that this has been my life with these children and that’s just how I’m approaching it. Who knows, time will tell the rest. “

Tyler Hoechil’s idea that his Clark Kent is separate and different from the version we saw in Supergirl and the Arrowverse crossovers aligns with that of Superman & Lois showrunner Todd Helbing. The showrunner explained how the series brought a new Lucy Lane. The change is justified because “the Crisis on Infinite Earths gave the opportunity to” rewrite “the character”.
