It was confirmed last September that the series will end with an extended sixth and final season, which debuted earlier this year and returned for new episodes in August. Supergirl Season 6 Ending Explained
In the Supergirl series finale Kara realized that she had failed the test for the Totem of Courage because she had not had the courage to save Alex under her true identity in the Supergirl pilot. After all, she spent six years fearful if the whole world knew her secret. Kara ultimately chose to reveal her identity to the world. She didn’t want to hide anymore because that meant holding back in so many ways. In many ways, Kara has found the courage she previously lacked to fully come to terms with herself, accepting both sides of her identity to be presented to the world without fear, and coming full circle in her Supergirl story.
Regarding Lex Luthor, given that it is difficult to escape the Phantom Zone, Lex is stuck there for the foreseeable future. Of course, never say never in the Arrowverse. There is always the possibility that Lex will escape or that the events of Superman & Lois Season 2 will allow him to escape the Phantom Zone. For now, at least, the Lex Luthor story is over.
Supergirl wouldn’t have been anything without her strong backing team, and the series finale said goodbye to them. Lena Luthor was able to turn the page after a conversation with Lillian Luthor, her dying mother. Lena was struggling to control her magic in Supergirl Season 6, but the biggest reveal came when Lillian revealed that she knew from the start that Lena’s biological mother was a witch.
Alex and Kelly had the pleasure of getting married in a beautiful ceremony with their family and friends. Kelly will continue to work as a social worker and babysitter, while Alex will join the DEO with J’onn. Nia’s future is a bit more vague, but she’s got back to talking with her sister Maeve and she’s still a reporter at CatCo, which Andrea hasn’t run since Cat Grant bought her out. She’ll probably stay there, now under Kara’s direction. The Supergirl Season 6 finale also saw Nia and Brainy get back together.
Meanwhile, J’onn will lead the DEO in its reimagined form, with Winn revealing that J’onn and M’gann have a son together. After William’s death, Andrea Rojas created a prize in his honor and opened a journalism school in his name.
What’s Next For Kara In The Arrowverse?
It’s possible that the events and decisions made in the Supergirl series finale could explain why the Girl of Steel isn’t featured in the crossover. While Supergirl is unlikely to hang up her cape anytime soon, she could use her journalistic powers to gain public trust in a more personal way.
It could be that Batwoman, The Flash, and Superman & Lois take into consideration the inhabitants of their respective cities after Kara’s actions, thus strengthening the bonds between the superheroes and the citizens they aim to protect.
Supergirl revealing her identity to the world is a big deal, but the fact that Kara doesn’t feel as needed in her role as a superhero anymore means that she might downsize her duties. After all, she and the Super Friends no longer have to worry about Lex Luthor, who was arguably the most dangerous and intriguing Supergirl villain throughout the show’s six seasons. It’s possible that the events and decisions made in the Supergirl series finale will explain why the Girl of Steel isn’t in Lightning Bolts. Crossover “Armageddon” (although Melissa Benoist is ready to don the Supergirl costume again if the opportunity arises). In the Arrowverse, however, Kara might even think that giving people the means to save themselves, so to speak, will mean fewer adventures for Supergirl in the future. There were already hints of this in the series finale. Supergirl’s new job might also be more open and honest with the people of National City than it has been with them in the past. Additionally, Supergirl revealing her identity to the world while retaining a crucial job as editor-in-chief of CatCo could improve superhero-audience relations. With Kara as a reporter and public superhero, there’s more of a sense of responsibility than she’s never really had before (at least until Supergirl season 6). Often the heroes of the Arrowverse operate on their own terms, often with no consequences to their actions. Super girl Season 6 featured the citizens of National City as having opinions about the actions of superheroes, and more so as it affects their daily lives.
