Stranger Things Tokyo: Netflix Prepares The Anime Spin-Off Of The Series
Netflix is preparing Stranger Things Tokyo, an anime spin-off of the famous series created by the Duffer brothers. For some time, the filmmakers have hinted that we would venture further into Upside Down with a spin-off of some sort before or after the conclusion of the main series. We have now learned that one of the show’s spinoffs will be an anime series titled Stranger Things Tokyo. The series, according to What’s on Netflix, has been in development for some time, and the first rumors spoke of the start of work during the first months of 2021. Details on the new project are still scarce, but we have a brief description of what awaits us: “An encounter with the Upside Down evolves into a great adventure for two video game-loving twin brothers who live on the outskirts of 1980s Tokyo”.
The series will last approximately 6 hours and will be the first spin-off of Stranger Things. The Duffer brothers confirmed the existence of a spinoff of some sort earlier this year when they renewed their contract with Netflix in 2022. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Matt Duffer said the spin-off will be “100% different” from the original and added that it will be a “story that connects to the world of Stranger Things, but it’s more than just other than telling that story and that’s it“.
Stranger Things Tokyo: What We Know
Stranger Things has already made its way into other formats with two main video games. In particular, one of the two (i.e. Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales) has recently been moved exclusively to Netflix Games. Some of Netflix’s biggest franchises (or attempted franchises) have seen spinoffs in different formats over the years. The example was mostly that of The Witcher, of which an anime spin-off and a live-action spin-off were made.
Other examples of Netflix IPs converted or intended to be converted into anime/animated spin-offs are Bright (Bright: Samurai Soul), Altered Carbon (Altered Carbon: Resleeved) and Army of the Dead. Mother series Stranger Things will return for a fifth and final season to stream on Netflix. The exit will not take place before 2024. As already mentioned, the Duffer brothers are working with Netflix under a global agreement. Other ongoing projects besides Stranger Things include The Talisman and the live-action adaptation of the Death Note anime series.
