Steve the New film with Cillian Murphy (based on a book): Plot and Release Date

Cillian Murphy has completed scheduled work on his new film, titled Steve, as revealed in a set photo. The project is an adaptation of Max Porter’s novel Shy, and the Oscar-winning actor is also attached to produce through his Big Things Films. A new film is coming to Netflix starring one of the most popular actors of the moment, Cillian Murphy, star of Peaky Blinders and Oppenheimer. After the success of Christopher Nolan’s film, Murphy will star in a new Netflix feature film entitled Steve, based on the novel Shy by Max Porter about the story of a headmaster of an institute for young, disturbed students who struggle with their mental health. Steve will be directed by Belgian director Tim Mielants, who has already worked with Murphy on Peaky Blinders and Small Things Like This and written by the same author of the original book. The film is being produced by Cillian Murphy and Alan Moloney with their new production company Big Things Films. But let’s go into more detail.

Steve: The Plot of the Film with Cillian Murphy

The novel on which the film will be based Steve tells the story of a few strange hours in the life of a troubled teenager with mental health issues. In the night, he finds himself wandering at night listening to the voices in his head: his teachers, his parents, the people he has hurt, and those who try to love him. This boy is running away from the home of “very disturbed young people”, and he walks listening to his nightmares, his past, and the heavy question of his future. The Netflix film will not be a direct adaptation of the book but a retelling that puts the principal at the center of the story, exploring 24 hours in his life as he tries to keep his students in line while struggling with his own mental health.

Murphy and the Return to the World of Peaky Blinders?

Now that Steve has wrapped filming, Cillian could return to the world of Peaky Blinders, which is set to return to the screens with a film. The series left off with Tommy dealing with a showdown that also led to the death of his cousin Michael, played by Finn Cole, and who decides to entrust his family’s business to his sister Ada, a role played by Sophie Rundle. Tom Harper (Heart of Stone), after having taken care of some episodes of the first season, will direct the film starring Cillian Murphy, who recently won an Oscar for his performance in Oppenheimer. Filming will begin soon, with series creator Steven Knight penning the script.

Who’s in the Cast of Steve (besides Cillian Murphy)

As for the casting of Steve, it was announced that Cillian Murphy will star as the title character. In July 2024, Netflix confirmed that Jay Lycurgo will star alongside Murphy. Lycurgo recently starred in the Netflix series “The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself”. Other credits include Titans and The Batman.
