Squid Game 2 Will Be Done? Here’s What The Director Said And What Questions The New Episodes Should Answer

The director of the first season of Squid Game commented on any new episodes. But these, what questions should they answer?

The first season of Squid Game is available on Netflix from September 17, 2021 and in a few days it has already become a global phenomenon occupying the top ten of the most viewed titles in many countries, including Italy. In the United States, for example, Squid Game became the first Korean drama to hit a Netflix top ten. Without any delay, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos went off-balance by saying – in an interview with Deadline – that Squid Game’s viewing numbers suggest that this may soon be the platform’s most watched show ever.

Squid Game 2 Will Be Done

In short, the survival / thriller written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk has all the credentials to be renewed by Netflix for a second season. But probably, if that happens, the new episodes won’t air anytime soon! In fact, in an interview with Variety, the director admitted that working on the show proved to be a long and complex process for him and that, unfortunately, he has no intention of repeating the experience anytime soon.

The director born in 1971 said that he started planning the realization of Squid Game in 2008 and that the first two episodes required 6 months of writing. In addition, Dong-hyuk continued, when Netflix commissioned him to produce the show, it was a considerable difficulty for him to make Squid Game “readable” even to a non-Korean audience.

Writing Squid Game was more difficult than normal for me, as it is a series and not a movie. It took me six months to write and rewrite the first two episodes. I have no definite ideas for Squid Game 2. It’s hard enough just to think about it. But if I were to do it, I certainly wouldn’t do it alone. I would consider using a scriptwriter room and would like more experienced directors.

What Questions Should Squid Game 2 Answer?

Squid Game Season 1 finale closed its edition of the games and left some narrative lines open for eventual future development. Also there are some questions that were not answered during the first 9 episodes.

As for the actor Seong Gi-hun, he wins the games and would like to join his daughter in Los Angeles: in the end, however, he decides not to take flight. The motivation seems to be related to the fact that he wants to prevent a new Squid Game from starting. For this reason he could somehow replace the figure of the policeman in the first season and be the protagonist from outside, that is, as a non-participant in the games.

Some of the questions that need to be answered are related to the figure of the Front Man or the one who managed the games in the edition won by number 456. The latter turned out to be the brother of the policeman Hwang Jun-ho but also the winner of a past edition of the games. Ultimately, it turns out that the Front Man is very close to Elder Oh Il-nam, as he is next to him at the moment of death.

At this point the questions arise:

  1. Why is Front Man so addicted to games that he kills his brother?
  2. What binds Front Man to the old man who founded Squid Game?
  3. Why did Front Man not enjoy life elsewhere after winning the games?

As for Front Man’s brother or policeman Hwang Jun-ho, there is probably only one question to ask: did he stay alive after falling off the cliff?

Another curious question concerns how and why the guards in red overalls who take care of the games are chosen. These are of three levels: simple workers marked with a circle, armed soldiers marked with a triangle and the leaders who manage the groups of workers which are marked with a square. Are these men on the island of their own free will or are they somehow prisoners?

Finally, the second season of Squid Game should answer the questions:

  1. Who manages the new editions of the games?
  2. Will the rules change?
  3. Will the games of the new edition be different?

The first season of Squid Game is available on Netflix.
