Spirit Awards 2024: Past Lives Triumphs, All the Winners List
Past Lives was awarded best film at the 2024 Film Spirit Awards, awarded on Sunday 25 February in Santa Monica. Celine Song was awarded Best Director for her work. Da’Vine Joy Randolph won the Spirit Award for Best Supporting Performance for her role in The Holdovers, repeating her success at the SAG Awards on Saturday, February 24, as well as other awards season events. His co-star, Dominic Sessa, won the Spirit Award for Best Performance by a Newcomer. American Fiction also took home two trophies: Cord Jefferson won best screenplay, while Jeffrey Wright won best lead performance. May December won the award for best screenplay for Samy Burch (the story is by Burch together with Alex Mechanik). Les Filles d’Olfa was awarded best documentary.
Spirit Awards 2024: Past Lives Triumphs, All the Winners List
On the TV side, BEEF was awarded best miniseries, while Ali Wong won the award for best lead performance, also scoring a double following her win at the SAG Awards the previous evening. The Last of Us got two trophies: Nick Offerman won the award for Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series, while Keivonn Montreal Woodard won the award for Best Performance by a Newcomer. Dear Mama was awarded best non-scripted series or documentary. The 39th Spirit Awards were hosted by Saturday Night Live alum Aidy Bryant. Winners were voted on by Film Independent members (some awards were presented at another event last month). During the show, a group of protesters loudly interrupted the speeches of the hosts and winners, chanting “Free Palestine” and “Ceasefire now” with a megaphone outside the tent located on Santa Monica beach.
Also, during the show, the Robert Altman Award, which is given to a film’s director, casting director, and cast, was given to Showing Up, directed by Kelly Reichardt. The casting director is Gayle Keller, while the cast includes André Benjamin, Hong Chau, Judd Hirsch, Heather Lawless, James Le Gros, John Magaro, Matt Malloy, Amanda Plummer, Maryann Plunkett, Denzel Rodriguez and Michelle Williams. Additionally, Jury Duty was awarded the award for Outstanding Cast in a TV Series, which includes Alan Barinholtz, Susan Berger, Cassandra Blair, David Brown, Kirk Fox, Ross Kimball, Pramode Kumar, Trisha LaFache, Mekki Leeper, James Marsden, Edy Modica, Kerry O’Neill, Rashida Olayiwola, Whitney Rice, Maria Russell, Ishmel Sahid, Ben Seaward, Ron Song, and Evan Williams.
