Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman and written by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger, Spiral – The Legacy of Saw (original title Spiral: From the book of Saw) represents the ninth chapter of Saw, the successful film series that began in 2004 with Saw – L riddle and invented by James Wan and Leigh Whannell. The previous eight films introduced the world to the Machiavellian character of John Kramer – aka Jigsaw – (masterfully played by Tobin Bell), a man suffering from terminal brain cancer, but so brilliant that he created diabolical killing machines for his. victims. To be fair, it must be said that Jigsaw never “killed” his victims personally, but he made sure (together with his followers as anyone who has seen the films in the franchise knows) that they killed themselves in order not to be you are able to truly appreciate the gift of life.

Spiral – The legacy of Saw can be considered a sort of reboot of the franchise, with a plot apparently similar to the previous films but with completely new characters and unrelated to the person of Jigsaw, definitely moved to “better life”. In the cast we meet the likes of Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson and Max Minghella, regarding the three main roles.

Spiral: The Story Plot

During a 4th of July parade to celebrate Independence Day, off-duty detective Marv Boswick chases a thief through a sewer drain. Attacked from behind by a figure wearing a creepy pig-faced mask, Boswick wakes up and finds himself tongue-tied to the ceiling in a fully functioning subway tunnel. A recorded message offers him a chance: tear off his tongue and live, or hang on until the next train arrives, and then die. Unable to escape the trap in time, Boswick is run over by the train and killed.

The next day, police captain Angie Garza assigns detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks a new partner, rookie William Schenk. Banks and Schenk begin to investigate Boswick’s grisly death, with Banks soon realizing that he is facing a crime scene very similar to those already seen and orchestrated years earlier by the late Riddler John Kramer, known to all as Jigsaw.

Meanwhile, a homicide detective named Fitch – who had ignored a call from Banks several years earlier in search of reinforcements and risked having him killed – is kidnapped and placed in a trap where he must tear off his fingers to avoid electrocution in a basin full of water. Unfortunately, he too fails to escape the monstrous trap and dies. Some police officers begin to suspect that Banks may be responsible for the murders, due to his old quarrel with Fitch.

A box arrives at the police station containing a pig-shaped puppet and a piece of Schenk’s tattooed skin inside. A small trace inside the box directs police to a butcher’s shop, which had previously been a hobby shop frequented by Banks and his father, now retired police chief Marcus Banks. Upon arrival, the team discovers a tape recorder and a skinned corpse, identified as Schenk’s. Deciding to track down the killer himself, Marcus goes to the warehouse, where he is kidnapped. Soon after, Garza is also kidnapped and trapped in the butcher’s cold room where she has to sever her spinal cord on a blade to stop hot wax flowing from a tube onto her face.

While chasing a trail, Banks is captured and wakes up in the warehouse, handcuffed to a pipe with a hacksaw nearby. He thinks that the only solution to escape may be to cut his arm, but the detective manages to escape using a hairpin with which he removes the handcuffs. Once freed, he notices the presence of Peter Dunleavy – his former police partner previously fired and then arrested when Banks discovered a murder the man had committed – chained to the scene. In front of Peter is a large glass-shattering machine, which has been modified to quickly hurl splinters at him.

Spiral Ending Explained

Moving to another room, Banks finds here Schenk, who we discover to have faked his own death using the skinned corpse of the thief who lured Boswick into the tunnel. So he is the imitator of the Riddler. He explains that his name is Emmerson and that he is the son of the person Dunleavy killed. The policeman had shot his father because he had agreed to testify against a corrupt policeman. It also reveals that Marcus, during his work as police chief, deliberately protected some corrupt officers (including Garza) to “clean up” the crime streets more efficiently.

Believing Banks may turn out to be an ally, Emmerson subjects him to a final test, showing him his father Marcus being held in the air and slowly drained of his blood. Emmerson calls 9-1-1 and claims he is a civilian being chased by a sniper, with the operator on the phone ending up sending a special team to his location. Schenk hands Banks a revolver, offering him the chance to shoot at a target that will save Marcus but allow Emmerson to escape, or to kill Emmerson and let his father bleed to death. Banks shoots the target to save his father, who falls to the ground, and starts fighting Emmerson. Shortly thereafter, the SWAT arrives on the scene and inadvertently sets off a trap, causing Marcus to be pushed up again.

Banks screams desperately in grief over his father’s death, while Emmerson manages to escape.
