Spaceman with Adam Sandler will be available on Netflix from March 1, 2024. This is a science fiction drama film, which although it has strange details in the plot most of the time, is touching. The film is an adaptation of Jaroslav Kalfar’s 2017 novel, entitled Spaceman of Bohemia. The protagonist is a cosmonaut who finds himself at the center of a revolutionary space research program. Things get dangerous when he discovers a different being on the spaceship. Inspired by the sci-fi novel The Cosmonaut by Jaroslav Kalfa and directed by Johan Renck, Spaceman is ready to make the audience reflect on very profound themes from the meaning of life to the value of time and relationships between human beings. But how does Spaceman end? What happens to Hanuš and how does the love story between Jakub and Lenka end? Let’s find out.
The film directed by Johan Renck from a script by Colby Day begins with Jakub dreaming that he is traveling through a river and a forest in his cosmonaut suit. Peter’s (Kunal Nayyar) voice, contacted by him on Earth, awakens him to deliver an important lecture as part of the Eurospace Program. During the meeting, he talks about what it means to examine the mysterious, ancient dust cloud known as Chopra, but a question from a sixth-grade student leaves him shaken: “I read that you are the loneliest man in the world. Doesn’t it make you sad to be so far away? While going about his daily activities, the protagonist of Spaceman cannot stop thinking about his wife Lenka (Carey Mulligan) and that he has not spoken to her in several days. The idea that his marriage cannot withstand the distance torments him, even the medicine he uses to sleep no longer has any effect. Amid this crisis, he has a nightmare about a small creature that hides in his body.
Spaceman Movie: The Story Plot
The plot of the film Spaceman on Netflix begins with Jakub Prochazcha, a cosmonaut from the Czech Republic, taking on a mission in Czech and European space research. The man has the task of collecting dust particles near a phenomenon that loves a strange purple light, called Chopra Cloud. Jakub is alone and has spent the last six months in space, often speaking remotely to his pregnant wife, Lenka, through the CzechConnect Quantum device. It turns out that the woman wants a divorce, she records a video in which she talks about it and hasn’t been heard from for a long time.
Commissioner Tuma, however, keeps Jakub in the dark about this, to avoid having him distracted from the mission. Suddenly, while confused about his marriage situation, he notices a giant spider speaking in English on his spaceship. But why does Lenka want a divorce? Jakub is increasingly interested in his work, rather than their family, although he has promised in the past to change. Meanwhile, the protagonist believes that the spider is just a figment of his imagination, at first. Then he tries to disinfect the spaceship to kill him, but it doesn’t work.
Spaceman Ending Explained: What Happened to Jakub, Hanus and Lenka?
How does Spaceman end? Jakub, who is in space to study the mysterious particles that have appeared in the sky over the last 4 years, is getting closer and closer to the mass he is studying, and, finally, the time comes to capture a sample for analysis. Meanwhile, his relationship with the alien Hanuš grows more and more and the two become friends even though Hanuš admits he is dying. So, while the two are very close to the mass of particles, Hanuš exits the spaceship, letting himself go to his death and saying goodbye to his new friend Jakub. He, however, is not ready to say goodbye to Hanuš forever so he puts on his suit and exits the spaceship to go and save his friend. So Hanuš decides to bring Jakub into the middle of the cloud which represents the beginning of the world and makes him see the essence of life itself where past, present, and future coexist and are in harmony.
This is where the meaning of life is hidden, where there is everything and there is nothing. Jakub finally makes peace with himself and his thoughts, he understands that affection is the most important thing and, thanks to Hanuš and his teachings, he understands that what he wants to do is return to his Lenka. At this point, it is time for Hanuš to let go and die. First, however, Jakub gives him a gift to make him die with the sweetness of the chocolate cream he had made him taste. Hanuš dies becoming a set of particles himself but it is not yet Jakub’s time, as he finds himself floating in the universe alone but happy, and sees another spaceship in front of him which recovers and saves him. The film ends with a phone call between Jakub and Lenka where the two, one in space and the other on Earth, think back to their first kiss and, despite everything, tell each other that if they went back, they would do it all again.
Seeing Jakub’s condition, Peter recommends that he take a nap to recover, and insists on knowing how he is since his mental health is a crucial part of the mission. But the commander claims to be fine and continues with his daily work, which includes simulations of collecting samples from Chopra and sending some data from the expedition. One night, while trying to contact his wife via CzechConnect, he hears someone else’s voice. Although he believes it to be interference, he later discovers that it is a mysterious creature from the beginning of time that he finds hidden in the bowels of his ship. At first, he believes it is part of his imagination and asks Peter to check the cameras, but they are damaged. He then escapes from her and asks her to decontaminate the ship, but eventually accepts that he is there and interacts with the creature he names Hanus.
Hanus calls him “Thin Human” and tells him that after the Gorompeds, parasitic creatures, took over his planet, he escaped and was drawn to Earth, so he studied its history and languages and admits that he never managed to understand them. Then he came across Jakub’s ship and was intrigued by his loneliness. After observing him for several months, he believes he can help him. Why doesn’t Lenka communicate with Jakub? In the first minutes of “Spaceman”, Commissioner Tuma receives Lenka’s message for her husband. After seeing the video in which Jakub’s wife leaves him permanently, she decides to hide the recording to protect the commander and the mission of the Eurospace Program. Every time Procházka asks about Lenka she is given a different excuse: “She is on a trip to her mother’s house” and “there is a problem with her CzechConnect”. Where is Lenka? In reality, she is with her mother, whom she informs that she has decided to separate from Jakub because she feels abandoned and she can’t handle that situation anymore. Furthermore, she explains to him that she will spend the rest of her pregnancy in a special shelter for women in similar conditions.
Does Hanus Help Jakub?
As “Spaceman” progresses, Jakub relives the most important memories of his life with the help of Hanus. From some traumatic moments in his childhood to what he experienced with Lenka. Commander Procházka is obsessed with completing his mission to clear the name of his father, who was tried for the mistakes he made. The memories with Lenka show that their marriage was affected by their new mission since the distance between them always existed, although they were just a few centimeters away. Jakub was not with Lenka when she lost her first pregnancy and when she sought comfort from her husband, he gave more relevance to a minor problem on the ship and left her to deal alone with a pain that should have been theirs. Finally, Hanus understands that Jakub is a selfish person and only cares about him and what is related to his mission. After criticizing him for his “self-inflicted loneliness” The Creature expresses that she no longer finds him interesting to study, as he refuses to analyze his mistakes and amend them, and leaves. The commander begs him to stay and promises to do what is necessary.
Does Jakub Manage to get Back with Lenka?
After losing communication with Earth for a time, Jakub manages to contact Peter, whom he persuades to call Lenka. Although the woman does not say a word, Procházka apologizes for leaving her behind, even though she is the most important thing to him, for not making the effort to get to know her, and for living for the wrong reasons. He also claims that if she could do it again, she would do it better. As they approach Chopra, it is time to collect the samples, but Jakub abandons the mission when he sees Hanus, who has admitted that he will be devoured by the Gorompeds, exit the ship. Procházka follows him and heads to the dust cloud, there he sees the beginning and the end of the universe. In that place, he forgives his father and himself and also understands that all he needs is Lenka. At the end of “Spaceman,” Hanuš dies, but first, he tells him that the wisdom of humans is hope. While Jakub sees his wife in the dream at the beginning of the Netflix film, a South Korean ship appears and rescues him. Later, Jakub speaks to Lenka again, suggesting that he has hopes of saving her marriage.
Who is The Spider Hanus: Does He Really Exist or Does Jakub Imagine Him?
In reality, the giant spider is not a creature of Earth, but is part of an alien civilization, and is called Hanus. The latter can read Jakub’s mind and also detect images. The two eventually live together in the spaceship and even strike up a friendship. Hanus says that his home planet was destroyed by space insects, the Gorupteds and that he is the only survivor. He wandered into space until he noticed Jakub’s ship. What attracted him was the sadness and melancholy of the protagonist, so much so that he wanted to see clearly about his condition of him.
Hanus brings Jakub to understand his mistakes. The protagonist finally understands that he has been selfish with his wife. In fact, for Jakup the time spent with Hanus represents a sort of therapy. But does this alien being really exist? It seems to be a projection of the psyche and consciousness of Jakub, who has only been on the ship for six months. One might think, therefore, that Hanus does not exist and that he is only the fruit of the protagonist’s imagination. Furthermore, Peter, with whom Jakub is in contact, can never hear the spider’s voice. The protagonist’s mind may have created Hanus to deal with his loneliness and conscience.
How Spaceman Ends: Hanus, Jakub and Lenka’s Ending Explained?
Near the finale of Spaceman, the spaceship reaches a point near the Chopra cloud. While Jakub attempts to collect the particles, Hanus leaves the ship. The spider is happy to have helped him think, but the protagonist doesn’t want to let him go and follows him. He is, however, transported into the cloud, where he relives moments from the past and realizes that the only thing, he cannot do without is the presence of his wife Lenka. Like Hanus, Chopra Cloud also plays a key role in the life of Jakub, who now wants to win back his beloved.
Meanwhile, Hanus dies consumed by the Gorupted, while Jakub is expelled from the cloud and seems to be dying too. But here Spaceman ends with a happy ending. The Czech Space Research Agency raced the mission with the South Koreans, attempting to reach the Chopra Cloud first. It is the Koreans who save Jakub, as the rivalry between nations is ignored and human life is given weight. In the finale, Jakub calls Lenka from the Korean spaceship declaring his love for her. Eventually, he returns home and reunites with her, saving their marriage.
