The Duffer Brothers are already preparing Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, the new horror series that is part of their contract with Netflix and that could repeat the success that Stranger Things has had on the platform. In 2016, the Duffers changed the world when they premiered the first season of Stranger Things, a series set in the 1980s that was full of references to movies, fashion, and many other elements that defined that decade. The series followed four friends from a town called Hawkins, Indiana, who discover a shaved head girl with telekinetic powers, who was being hunted by a secret government agency, and who was the only one who could help save the town from the dark and terrifying creatures that were released as a result of a failed experiment.

Season after season, Stranger Things told us more about that story, about the origin of Eleven and Upside Down, but it also became a global phenomenon and one of the most successful series in the history of streaming. Season 5 is the last and will leave a huge gap, but the Duffers, creators of the series, are already working on a new project that could fill that void. News of the new series comes at a busy time for The Duffer Brothers. Netflix recently revealed a first look at the final season of Stranger Things, which is halfway through production and is expected to premiere in 2025. Additionally, the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow has been announced, which debuted in the West End in December. They’re also working on The Boroughs, which is set to begin production in the spring and are developing a Stranger Things spin-off and a live-action Death Note adaptation.
Haley Z. Boston, in addition to being the creator, will serve as executive producer and showrunner of the new project. “We feel so fortunate to produce her first show and can’t wait to share her vision with the rest of the world,” The Duffer Brothers commented. Also included as executive producers are Hilary Leavitt, through Upside Down Pictures, and Andrea Sperling, under overall deals with Netflix.
Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s vice president of scripted series for the US and Canada, was enthusiastic about the project: “We’re thrilled to once again collaborate with our dream partners Matt, Ross, and Hilary to bring this unexpected and chilling story to life through Haley’s unique and fascinating vision.” The Duffers told Deadline in an interview: “Our jaws dropped when we first read Haley’s script. She’s a great new talent with a singular voice; her writing is twisted, scary, funny, and… very Haley. We feel so lucky to be producing her first show, and we can’t wait to share her vision with the rest of the world.”
Boston’s previous credits include work for Guillermo del Toro on Netflix’s The Cabinet of Curiosities and Brand New Cherry Flavor, as well as the Amazon series “Hunters.” Her debut short film, “Beach Logs Kill,” premiered at SXSW earlier this year. Boston is represented by Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment and Yorn Levine Barnes.

According to Variety, the Duffers are already working on a new horror series called Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, a title that makes it very clear that this will be a story in which happy endings are not to be expected. The series was written by Haley Z. Boston and an early description says it is “an atmospheric horror series set at a wedding, following the bride and groom in the week leading up to their ill-fated nuptials. That’s not a spoiler, just read the title…”
It’s not known whether the series will also be set in the 1980s or whether it will have sci-fi or fantasy elements, but Netflix vice president of series Peter Friedlander says it’s an “unexpected and chilling story.” Knowing the Duffers and their work, the series will undoubtedly be a production full of details, great characters, and shocking moments.
Variety says the Duffers commented: “We were blown away when we first read Haley’s script. She is a major new talent with a singular voice – her writing is twisted, scary, funny, and just… very Haley. Twisted, scary, funny, that’s all we want from a good horror series, so the project sounds promising, especially since Boston previously worked on projects like “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities,” “Brand New Cherry Flavor” and the Nazi-hunting series “Hunters.”
When Does Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen Release?
There is no release date yet, production on Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is in the early stages of development and everything seems to indicate that there is still no cast or start date for filming, so it is possible that the series will not last until 2026, to also give us time to say goodbye to Stranger Things properly. Additionally, the Duffers are working on another series called The Boroughs, an adaptation of Dead Note, and several possible Stranger Things spin-offs (which we hope will include one that shows us all the experiments the Rainbow Room kids participated in or shows how they were found and brought there in the first place).
